Chapter 10
âHoly shit,â Kiana was the first to speak. We were standing in the middle of the twelve and thirteen yearsâ old classroom, and apparently it was a bit of a surprise to Kiana.
Lucas and Steve on the other hand just stood in the back as if it was nothing to them, or maybe it was and they just refused to show it. Still, this classroom was nothing like the other two classes we had seen with desks for learning and no place to run. Instead this very room was made for running. The class is a full gym, or rather six gyms in one. There were sections where a new wolf can run and jump getting used to their four legs, and off to the right hand side thereâs a door that leads to a huge pool for swimming. The gym itself was just as amazing. Like before thereâs places to run and jump for the new wolves, as well as a place for a friendly race, if they wanted. We played almost like the mortals would, except we had jumping over boulders twice the size of an adult man, swimming across the pool in the other room, and even running through woods which covers a third of the gym.
The gym itself was supposed to help a new wolf in understanding their wolf form and how their body worked, and just before the student turned fourteen they would go through a test on the track and have to get a certain time in order to get in the class for older students. We didn't expect a student to run the track in less than three minutes, but instead we added the times from all of their tryouts they had and averaged them out. Usually it would be around seven minutes or so.
âWhere do the students who are fourteen and older have class?â Kiana asked curiously. She was still looking around the gym in amazement, her eyes big and round like a childâs.
âHere actually. This gym is big enough for both class groups, but theyâre allowed certain times that only they can run in the gym, or even swim. We tried keeping them separated but not fully separated. We figured out that a student who would be going through their first transformation does a lot better when theyâre around a student who has already gone through the same transformation. It's almost like their wolves talk to one another and help them out.â
âI never heard of that,â Steve said, arching his brow.
âAt first we hadn't either, but another pack was talking about it at a meeting, and my father actually tested it out,â I said turning to Steve. âI mean it could be just that one studentâs wolf was ready before the other studentâs wolf; weâre really not sure, but we had been keeping up with it since then.â
âWhat about the student who hasn't turned into a werewolf yet?â Kiana questioned.
âYou mean, Hunter? We have been trying everything we could think of for him,â I answered honestly. âNothing has worked though, and we don't know why. Hunter can talk to his wolf, but for some reason his wolf just wonât come out. I think our doctor has honestly started to give up on Hunter. His family already did.â
I could feel Kiana's stare even when Iâm not looking. âWhat if I tried working with him?â she asked. From behind me I could heard Lucas and Steve whispering about Kiana's request. I could also see the worry in both of their eyes as I turned in their direction, but Kiana doesnât seemed worried, and instead seemed hopeful. âI mean it can't hurt, can it?â
âNo it can't,â I replied. âWe can set up a day sometime this week if you would like? I mean it could be good to get another personâs insight on the matter.â
âThat's what I was thinking.â Kiana smiled.
âWhen Kiana works with Hunter, would it be alright if I accompany her?â Lucas asked, speaking up for the first time in what seems like hours.
I nodded. âNo that isn't a problem. The doctor will probably want to be there though. I mean considering the two of you arenât even in the pack, they will want to make sure that Ty will be alright.â
âThat's not a problem,â Lucas said, âwith the doctor there, we can figure out what she has been thinking about and why Hunter has not transformed yet, and maybe get a bit of her incite on the matter as well.â
âIf either of you can honestly figure out why Hunter has not changed yet I think the whole community will be in shock,â Derek said speaking up for the first time since coming up the stairs. He had a smile on his face as he moved closer towards Kiana.
âYeah we would be too, honestly,â Steve said. Heâs too busy staring worriedly at Lucas.
Although Iâm not far from the front door of the classroom I still walked over and leaned against the frame staring off at the four in front of me. âWe could head down and continue the rest of the tour. Sadly, we wonât be meeting most of the pack members today, but during initiation you can see them. Other than that, we can go for a run around our territory. We might run into a few members that way.â I looked at Lucas, Kiana and Steve as I finished my sentence. âThat is if you three would like to.â
âYeah sure.â Kiana smiled, before looking at Lucas and Steve. At first they seemed content with saying no, but soon the two of them nodded their heads without a word.
âFollow me then.â I motioned my hand to follow, walking out of the classroom and down the stairs to the front of the school. I waited for the rest of them to follow suit, first with Derek who somehow was able to get his arm around Kiana before walking down the stairs, then finally Steve and Lucas who were in the back whispering to each other. I didn't bother to invade their conversation even though I could. Instead, I kept myself occupied and looked at Derek. âDerek, seriously,â I said silently through the packâs own use of a telephone.
âWhat?â Derek asked silently. He was staring at me, way too close to Kiana to even notice that Steve and Lucas had finished their conversation and were now glaring at his back.
I smiled. âIf you don't get your hands off of Kiana, Iâm sure, Steve and Lucas will help you.â
Wide-eyed Derek moved his hand off of Kiana and stepped away from her. Kiana stared at him in wonder and sadness, but Derek doesn't look back.
âWe could go south for this trip of our territory,â I suggested loud enough for Lucas and Steve to hear. They were a bit further back watching Derek and Kiana. âThe run will be a bit longer than the other sections of our territory, but itâs also the one section where we are borderline with another packâs territory,â I explained to them. âWe always have to have border patrol here because of that. Theyâre friendly so thereâs really nothing to worry about; just always good to be cautious.â The three of them noded their head in agreement while Derek just stands off to the side with his arms crossed. âLet's get going then,â I finished saying, before turning around and walking out the door, everyone following closely behind.
We walked down the sidewalk for a little bit before taking a left hand turn going south. The nearest section of woods was just behind a few pack member's houses, but it doesnât take long to get there. At the edge of the woods, the five of us bent down to transform into our wolves. To the right of me was Steve and as he transformed into his wolf I could hear the cracking of bones which was a sure indication that his wolf hasn't been out in a while. Itâs also a sign of his wolf growing, but I doubt heâs able to grow anymore. I sat beside him already in wolf form waiting for his transformation to be completed. When Steve had finished transforming, I noticed that it wasnât much shorter than me in wolf form. I also noticed that Steve's wolf color is a dark black though in certain areas I could see bits of blue on the tip of his fur where the sun hits it. Steve's eyes also had changed during the transformation. They once were a hazel color, but as he sat in front of me, they had turned into a dark brown almost, black color.
Steve walked up to Kiana and Lucas who had already finished their transformation a while ago. In wolf form itâs almost impossible to tell the two apart, although Lucas was most likely the bigger wolf of the two. His wolf, like Kiana's is a dark shade of red-brown that seemed to glow as the light hits it making his fur turn a brighter orange than a dark red. Unlike Steve, Lucas's eye color has not changed and instead they stay a simple brown color. I wondered still, how his eyes had changed to bright white from the last time we had met, yet here they are, the same brown color as his normal eyes. I turned to Kiana. She of course, is the shorter of the two wolves. Like Lucas, her wolf is a dark red-brown color, and also like Lucas her eyes have not changed colors, and instead her eyes have stayed hazel. The two differences between Kiana and Lucas was that Kiana's wolf had a longer muzzle, and she had more feminine features than Lucas's wolf showed.
After everyone was completely wolfed out I turned to Derek. Heâs sitting to my left in his wolf form, his tongue hanging out at Kiana. Derek's wolf is a gray-black color, though the gray was more dominate throughout his fur. âWeâll take things slow at first.â I told Derek who nodded in agreement.
Sitting up, I walked passed Lucas quickly twisting my head to the south in a way to say ready. We couldnât talk to the three of them in wolf form yet, so instead we had to find other means to communicate. When I figured the three of them understood what I meant, I took off in a jog towards the south.
It doesn't take long before I could feel the soft breath of another wolf close behind me. A voice in my head chanted that Lucas was behind me, and I only wanted to push faster and harder just to see how far he could go.
âI thought you said slowly,â Derek mocked. Heâs probably with the other two jogging their way through the woods right now.
âI wanted to see how fast he could run,â I said simply back.
I could hear Derek snort. âHeâs running faster than any of us back here.â
I was about to say something about slowing down when I saw Lucas' wolf run up beside me. He looked directly at me, and I swear he smiled, before sprinting off ahead of me. Running dead ahead, Lucas stopped just earshotâs from our territoryâs ending.
âHow the hell did you know the territory ended?â I asked Lucas twenty minutes later. Everyone at this point was able to catch their breath from the run, as well as transform back into their human forms. Lucas is sitting on a log next to Kiana and Steve.
âI could smell it,â Lucas said, shrugging like it was no big deal.
âHow could you smell it?â
âThrough this whole run I had been paying attention to the other scents around me and to the other wolves who have roamed around the area. The other side of your border has a different scent where different wolves have roamed.â
âI never thought to do that honestly.â
Lucas smiled. âWell, itâs the easiest way to figure out if anyone crossed your border or not. I can however tell you that someone has crossed your border.â He turned to Kiana as if heâs talking to her. âSomeone we know,â he said with a fearful tone.
