Chapter 22

~Lucas~

We were just walking up the path to the house when the first sounds of Kiana were heard.

“What’s taking them so long?” I could hear her say before her voice was lost in a whisper. I then heard the creaking of the floorboards, an indication that she had been pacing again.

“It hasn’t even been that long Kiana,” came Steve’s voice from somewhere close by.

“Well it sure feels like—” Kiana started to say just as Josiph took the first steps up the porch. The boards groaned in protest as his weight settled into them, and only seconds later was the front door opened. Kiana was staring directly as us. “What took you so long!?” she asked, with her arms crossed over her chest.

“We couldn't just walk away,” I replied with a roll of my eyes before Josiph and I walked passed her.

She closed the door behind us before turning and asking, “What did Lucian say?”

From the corner of my eye I could see Josiph leaning up against the door frame with his hands in his pockets. He was looking at the ground but from what I could see his face was void of any sort of emotions even though his mind spoke every word possible. He still said nothing, and left me to reply to my sister.

“Just that he wants you, and that he’s going to get you.”

Laughing Kiana replied, “Over my dead body he will.”

“More like over mine,” Josiph replied for the first time looking up at Kiana. “He has claimed a fight with me, and the fight is in a week.”

“The full moon,” she whispered softly in fear.

Josiph nodded. “Yes, he will be bringing a couple of werewolves from his pack to watch the fight, and to make sure everything goes as it should.” He paused, as I watched him leaning away from the door frame, as he headed to the middle of the room, stopping. “The fight will take place after the new wolves has taken their transformations, and will go on until either one of us is dead, or has given up.”

“Then what?” I asked.

“If I win, then Lucian will not bother neither of you anymore,” Josiph explained. “If I lose, however, then you must leave or be taken captive by Lucian himself.” He stopped for a heartbeat before going on, “A meeting will need to be scheduled tomorrow so I can inform the rest of the pack of the upcoming events.”

The four of us nodded but said nothing until later that night when Kiana and Steve left to go home. It was then that Derek actually spoke up. “You don't always have to be the rock in our group, Josiph.”

“I'm not being a rock,” Josiph asserted. “I’m being an alpha. The one who’s supposed to take care of everyone in the pack no matter what the outcome turns out to be.” He ran his hands through his fair, sighing, before he carried on, “the one who’s supposed to stand up for everyone, and make sure nothing happens to them. I’m not trying to be an emotionless rock, but the protector of this pack.”

“Well maybe once in a while you should allow someone to take care of you rather than you taking care of them,” I told Josiph moving closer towards him before going on. “You might just be the alpha, but even an alpha will break down at some point.”

“Not this one.”

Smiling I took his hand before going on, “Even this one will break down at one point. You can't be a rock forever Josiph, even if you try to be. You need to allow someone in to take care of you, and to help you.”

“How can anyone help me now? I'm about to fight a lost battle against a ruthless alpha. What help is there to receive?” Josiph asked, his voice rising a little as he spoke before he backed away.

“More than you actually think,” I muttered softly. “There are some things out there that you may never understand. “There are also some things out there that are around for a reason, and although you may fight it, they are there to help you. You just have to let them help you.”

“There’s no one out there that can ever help me,” Josiph said sternly, looking at the wall as he spoke.

I walked up behind him before whispering, “now that’s where you’re wrong” before leaving Josiph and Derek alone.

The following day Josiph called for a meeting at one o’clock in the meeting room where he’d constantly talked about the alpha fight that would take place on the next full moon. There were many in the pack who worried about his safety and the safety of their children, but there were also many others who worried more about what would happen to them. There were also very few in the pack who didn't seem to worry at all about anyone’s’ safety. It was like they didn’t even about anyone else in the pack, just as long as they were alright.

I wasn't sure who I hated more when it came to them. It was between those who worried more about what would happen to themselves, and those who didn't worry at all about those in the pack.

“What about the children?” one of the local pack teachers asked.

“The children will not be asked to watch the fight,” Josiph replied to the young teacher who was still wearing her work uniform. Her work uniform consisted of a white blouse and black overalls. “They along with anyone else who wants to stay, can stay back.”

“Who’s this man who claimed the battle?” a younger man asked in the back row. He was at most twenty years old with messy black shoulder length hair and dark brown eyes.

“A man by the name of Lucian. He is twice my size and three times my weight. His wolf will probably be bigger than any of our own, and he uses fear to get control in his own pack.”

“Meaning that he will try and control us if you were to lose the battle?" the same young man asked Josiph.

“He will try to control everyone he can. His own pack fears him every minute of the day. If I were to win this battle they won't fear him anymore.”

“But what about us?” another man asked from closer up front. He was maybe in his early forties with blue eyes and blonde hair that was turning silver. “If you were to lose this battle what will become of us?”

“If I lose this battle, then Lucas himself has promised to take you all to safety. You will escape with him until you are able to make another pack home or join another pack. Any of the packs around us would welcome you into their family if it is to come to that,” Josiph explained, eyeing him.

“It will not come to that though,” I said loud enough for everyone to hear. I was in the front row, next to Kiana and Steve and directly in front of Josiph when he first had started the meeting.

Josiph nodded in agreement and I could see the corner of his lips twitching into a smile before he got serious again. “One rule that will need to be known is, for those of you who don’t come to the fight, will have to know that no one is to get involved.” He leaned forward, his brows arching down. “It’s a pack costume that only the two wolves who’s involved in the fight, are to be in the fight, and anyone who tries to get involved will get killed on the sight. There will be no exceptions.” The next part he said looking directly at me. “If anyone tries to join the fight, you’re supposed to hold them back against their will.”

An hour later Josiph finally called the meeting to an end but still left many questions in the air. Most members still didn’t know what to expect during this fight, or what to expect of Lucian. Some members were still worried about everyone’s’ safety and the events that were going to occur. The biggest one was the worry that everyone felt—what would happen when two alphas were to fight. We all knew someone’s going to win, and someone’s going to die.
