Chapter 26

~Lucas~

A month had passed since the actual battle between Josiph and Lucian, and although everyone still questions what actually happened that night no one seemed to complain about the outcome. Lucian is dead thanks to that night, which means everyone is free, including Kiana. She’s now able to find her one true mate in the following years. We don't know where he is at the moment, but hopefully one day we’ll find him, and hopefully he’ll accept her like everyone else has.

As for Lucian's pack the beta has taken control. We were able to find out that his name was Shane, and that he had recently joined the pack about two years ago. He took on the role of being the beta when the old beta had been killed in a battle against Lucian, and now he takes the lead of alpha. Since the battle Shane has changed everything, and instead of members fearing for their lives they had learned to love and trust one another. The pack has done a complete 180 since the battle and many still came over to thank Josiph for his courage in going up against Lucian when no one else would. However, there’s one drawback in all of this. Josiph is not with us.

He isn't dead of course, but for the past month he has been in a coma state which no doctor is certain will end. According to doctors they believe it could last for many months, and that we should give him all the time he needs to heal. “His body still needs time to heal.” They would keep telling us again and again like a broken record player, and so we waited.

Like most nights I sit next to Josiph's bed in the hospital wing watching as he slowly heals. His hand sits gently in my own still un-moving and almost lifeless. Some of Josiph's cut wounds are still visible, but those weren’t the ones we worry about the most. Instead, we worry about the internal wound, where his rib snapped and punctured his lung almost causing his death. The x-ray from the night before shows his healing growth has excelled, but doctors are still not sure when the healing will end. They believe that once his lung has fully healed properly, and he’s able to breathe on his own again he’ll wake up. I hope they’re correct.

“You can't stay here forever Lucas,” Kiana said from behind me. She had been standing silently behind me the whole time since entering the hospital wing thirty minutes ago.

“I want to make sure that he’s okay.” I sighed squeezing Josiph's warm hand. His pulse beats calmly against my palm and I smiled.

“You know he’s okay.”

“But what if he wakes up?” I asked, facing her for a split second. “I want him to wake up knowing that I’m here.”

“He’ll know that you’re here,” Kiana said gently placing her hand on my shoulder and squeezing. “Nothing will change that.”

I sighed. “She almost got him, Kiana,” I whispered, thinking of Death. “I don't want to give her that chance again.”

As usual Kiana knows what I’m talking about since we’d both almost been claimed by death in our youth. “She did, but he didn't go to her. She also can't take them if they’re not ready to go.”

“He was going to go to her. I could feel that,” I answered looking sadly down at Josiph's motionless face. “He was so close to her and the only reason why he wasn't able to go was because of you.” I gave her a small smile. “You saved him.”

“No, we both saved him, Lucas. When will you see that?”

“When he wakes up. When he’s in my arms. That’s why I want to be here the whole time,” I breathed. “I don't want to miss a single thing and I’ll stay here for however long it takes. I just want to be here when he opens his eyes.”

“We’ll be ready then, because he’s going to open his eyes soon,” she said, laying her hands on my shoulder in comfort. “But, right now, I have to get going. Derek is waiting for me at the field with the students. It’ll be my first run in such a long time.” She laughs softly. “I’m looking forward to it.” I could feel her squeezing my shoulder again before wrapping her arms around me, giving me a hug. “When Josiph wakes would you please join us? There’s a lot to explain tonight.”

I smiled, touching her hand. “Okay, I’ll let him know.”

“Don't take too long, but also don't rush him,” Kiana said her voice slowly fading away as she left the hospital room. I could hear the soft footsteps retreating against the tile floor as she leaves.

“Never do,” I whispered to myself.

Twenty minutes pass by with no movement other than my own soft breathing. I find myself dozing off once in a while waiting and hoping to see any sign of movement from the bed but none come. I was just about to give up and allow sleep to come when the first signs of actual movement came thirty minutes after Kiana left.

Josiph takes his first breath of fresh air, and my heart leaps with joy and happiness. I realized then that everything was turning out well except there was another challenge to face. Telling him the truth. There would be no turning back once the truth was out, and even though I was nervous I still had hope that he would accept it, just like everyone else in the pack had.

“W-what happened?” His first words were breathless and almost unrecognizable.

“You defeated Lucian in the battle,” I replied standing up and pouring a glass of water for Josiph. He had to be parched from the month of not drinking any liquids.

“I did?” he asked opening just one eye and turning his head to me. “I don't remember anything.”

“That’s to be expected.” I laughed moving back to him and gently placing the glass of water in his hand. “We have a lot of explaining to do.”

Ignoring the glass of water Josiph opened both of his eyes and looked around the room as if it were the first time he had ever been in the hospital wing. “Where am I?”

“You’re in the hospital wing. After the battle you collapsed and went into a coma. Your body has been healing for a month.”

“A month?” Shocked, he turned back to me sitting up quickly in the bed. Water spilled over the covers but Josiph ignored it when he turned to me.

I nodded before replying slowly, “One of your ribs punctured your lung and it has taken a long time to heal. The doctors were not sure how long it would take or even if you’ll survive for that matter. You’re healed, except for some minor scars that will heal more quickly now that your lungs have healed properly.”

He lowered his head at that. “Where is everyone else?”

“Well since a month has passed it’s now the full moon and everyone is getting ready for the transformation. Derek wasn't sure when you would wake up, and he didn't want anyone to miss the festivities so he started working on them while you were in the coma. Everyone’s there now and waiting for us to show up.”

I could see him biting the inside of his cheek before asking the question on his mind. “Could you explain to me how I was able to defeat Lucian? I don't even remember anything during that night.”

“Yes. Kiana, Steve and I plan to explain everything fully to you tonight. I know you just got up and all, but in order for that to happen we’ll need to meet up with everyone before the transformation begins.”

Swinging his legs over the side of the bed Josiph attempts to stand on his own. He loses his balance a few times but after a good ten tries he was able to stand on his own two feet. Taking his first steps was a whole different story though. “Then I guess we better get going.”

“You sure you are up for that?” I asked, my hands ready to catch him when he began taking his first steps. “I mean we have another hour before we have to be there. You don't have to rush.”

Josiph laughed. “I’m the alpha of this pack, and I just found out that I somehow defeated Lucian. I’d missed a whole month of my pack’s lives and have no clue what has happened since I’d been gone. Plus my mate has been keeping something from me and is finally going to me the truth,” he said breathing deeply, his eyes on me the whole time. “I don't plan on missing that or anything more in my pack,” he finished, taking a couple of steps away from the bed.

It takes at least twenty tries until he was able to get to the front door of the hospital wing. “Josip, you can take your time. There’s no need for you to rush.”

“I’m good,” he said stepping outside and into the moonlight.

Forty-five minutes later we’d arrived at the edge of the field. Josiph leaned up against a tree at the edge of the field watching silently as everyone took their positions in the field. He breathes heavily almost out of breath but doesn't say anything. Derek is in the center where he, and Josiph usually would stand giving orders about how things would go for the transformation. Kiana stands next to him wearing her usual wig. When she noticed us at the edge of the field she pulled on Derek's sleeve waiting for him to turn to her before pointing to us.

Derek smiles just as everyone turns in our direction, and all at once everyone begins cheering for Josiph. Most know the truth of what happened in the last full moon, but still they cheered just for the knowledge that Josiph is well and moving. “What’s going on here?” Josiph asked turning to me breathing heavily.

“Just the usual full moon transformation except for a little twist.”

“Twist?” he asked tilting his to the side in confusion.

I smiled. “Yes, we’ll just have to show you that twist though.” Holding lightly onto his arm I slowly pulled him to the center of the field. “Come on you’ll like it. I hope.”

“Welcome back, Josiph,” Derek said with a smile patting Josiph on the shoulder.

“Thank you.” Josiph smiled. “What’s the news you have to tell me?”

“That’s for Kiana and Lucas to tell you,” Derek said turning to Kiana. “It’s your show now girl.”

Kiana grinned. “Thanks.”

Derek turned to the pack waiting for everyone to quiet down before yelling, “Kiana is taking the stage now so everyone listen up. I know everyone here has some questions about what happened the night of the battle, and hopefully they’ll be able to explain everything to you. Listen closely everyone.”

“Okay, as most of you know, I’m different compared to everyone here during one night of the full moon,” Kiana shouted calmly turning to everyone around the field. “That’s because I’m considered a Moon Goddess. The last Moon Goddess actually.”

Kiana didn't even have a chance to finish the few sentences she had said before questions started to fly at her from left and right. She tried to ignore them as best as possible but nothing seemed to work until Derek and Josiph spoke up. “Quiet everyone,” they yelled in unison turning to one another and smiling. Derek stepped back quietly and almost un-noticed for Josiph. For those who had noticed, they chose to say nothing. “Yelling will not get her to reveal anything,” Josiph went on.

When everyone was silent again Kiana smiled to Josiph and went on speaking, “What happened the night of the last full moon is one of the few gifts I have, and why a lot of alphas want me as their mate. In technical term Josiph didn’t kill Lucian on his own, but in all honesty Lucas killed Lucian.”

“How?” Josiph asked in a whisper, turning to me first then to Kiana. “I thought I told you to not get involved.”

I smiled. “I didn't get involved. Well not literally.”

“Then how did you kill him if you didn't get involved?”

“Easy.” Kiana smiled, drawing the attention back to her. “I’m able to transfer two wolves so long as they have a deep connection. You and Lucas have that deep connection so I was able to send Lucas into your body where you healed just enough to send one attack which severed Lucian's head from the rest of his body. You don't remember anything from that night for a reason,” she explained.

“The bright light,” whispered Josiph.

“The bright light was my own transformation as well as the time where I was able to switch two souls for a few seconds.”

“Transformation?” he then asked. No one else spoke since they had already seen the transformation completely before their eyes during the battle.

“During the night of the full moon my wolf undergoes her own transformation. She becomes a pure white wolf like the moon and glows at times. My eyes like Lucas's will glow when I have found my mate, and I’m also able to create alpha ready sons. They’ll also be considered protectors, and this is another reason why most alphas want a moon goddess for a mate. Some like Lucian, would even go as far as to force a mating with a moon goddess. This is what Lucian tried doing.”

“You’re the last of your kind?” Derek's voiced. He stands in the back with the usual stance of his hands behind his back.

Sighing Kiana turned to Derek. She had already said she was the last of the moon goddess’ species and was just repeating herself now. “Besides my mother, yes I’m the last of my kind. Only the females become moon goddesses while the males have their own internal transformation. They gain a pure white stripe down their spine during the full moon, and are known as protectors in our species. Lucas is one and the only protector left in our species. Well, the only one we know of that is.”

From across the field a female’s voice spoke up. “What happened to everyone else in the species?”

“We were exterminated during the last war,” Kiana replied slowly. “During a time of crisis many packs feared the moon goddess so they started a war killing everyone they could in the pack. There was only one pack which consisted of the moon goddess species so that’s where they all went. My grandmother and one male were able to escape. At the time she was no older than ten years old. He was fifteen and later became her protector and mate. Together they gave birth to my mother. My mother's mate is not a protector but because the moon goddess gene is stronger my brother and I were born.”

“Is that why Hunter was able to transform last month?” another female asked. Her voice was soft and seemed afraid to speak up.

“In technical terms, yes,” I replied before Kiana could. “Along with the few gifts Kiana has mentioned we are able to bring out the wolf in any late bloomer. We’re also able to heal those who had become known as feral wolves,” I said turning directly to Natalie’s parents. They stood further away from everyone almost ready to sneak away for the last time, but at the sound of their daughter's voice they froze and turned to listen closely.

“You can do that?” Derek asked turning to Josiph quickly before turning to Kiana.

Kiana nodded. “Everyone deserves that chance,” she replied not so much in a whisper. She seemed to want Natalie’s parents to hear every word she said. “She’s still out there too. Scared and alone, but alive.” She then turned directly to them as she spoke. “We know you have not given up on her, and she has not given up on you two, either.”

The two of them smile but said nothing as they watch the events unfold. They wouldn't have even shown up tonight if it weren't for the fact that Steve had dragged them here by force telling them how they wouldn’t regret it.

“Can you show us your wolf?” a young man asked. He was maybe twenty years old with black hair and brown eyes.

Kiana turned to me. “That’s up to you Kiana. You don't have to, but that would also mean you can't run this full moon.”

“Yes, I know,” Kiana said turning away from me. “I’m giving you all a warning now. Since I’m under the full moon rather than being locked in a house, I’ll become as bright as the moon itself.” Taking a couple of steps away from everyone Kiana pulled off her wig revealing her bright white hair. “I forgot to mention even my hair turns white during the full moon.” She laughs then takes her first actual transformation as a moon goddess in the Belmont Bay pack.

The transformation didn't take long and in mere seconds a bright white wolf stands in front of everyone. With thick fur and huge paws Kiana stands at the height of my waist.

“Holy crap,” a voice said, gasping in shock, along with everyone else. They all stared at her, in amazement, and in a daze at her beauty.

“What about your wolf Lucas?” another voice asked. Hunter walked forward leaving his mate behind before stopping a couple of feet away from us. “Can you show us your wolf?” Nodding, I moved beside Kiana before transforming next to her. My wolf was twice the size of Kiana's wolf with the usual bright white stripe down my spine and thick fur.

Footsteps sounded from behind me and I turned to face Josiph. He was also in his wolf form and stood only an inch taller than me.

“I don't think the doctors would approve of you transforming this soon Josiph,” Derek said only to receive a growl from Josiph as he walked forward.

“So this is the big secret,” Josiph's voice sounded in my head as he circles around me getting a view from every direction.

“Not such a big secret. I mean you already knew since you’d seen Kiana on the last full moon. You just weren’t sure,” I replied watching him. “But it was a secret none the less.”

I could hear a sort of a laugh coming from Josiph's wolf. “It’s something I have to get used to. Is there more I should know about being a protector?”

“They don't ever back down from a fight, especially when it comes to their mate,” I told him staring directly into his eyes.

“That I could’ve figured out from our first meeting.” He moved closer towards me and gently rubbed his muzzle against my own. “Sorry about how everything went down that day.”

“I probably deserved it, after all, I did get a bit carried away.”

He shook his furry head. “No one in this family deserves to be treated the way I treated you. Not even my own mate.”

“Well you did say there’s no way I could be your mate."

“Yes, well but that was then.”

“And what about now?”

“Now...Now you’re mine,” he said, before turning back into his human form quickly. I turned just after him barely able to stand on my feet before he kissed me. Around us other wolves howled at the moon and hollered with joy. “Now you’re my mate, forever. No matter what we’ll have to face, I’ll stand by your side,” he said eventually after we separated from our lovely kiss.

“Forever,” I agreed before placing my lips back on his and kissed him again.
