Chapter 4

~Lucas~

“How do you know your mate is here?” he asked and before I could even answer him, he repeated his other question. “Why are your eyes a bright white? You ignored that question.”

“I ignored it for good reason,” I told him before I answered his other question. “Plus I just know that my mate is here.”

“Well if you’re smart you wouldn't ignore it,” he said trying to go all alpha on me. His own men behind him seemed to whimper at his command, and so did Steve and my sister. I just stayed tough.

“There’s no way in hell you’re going to go all alpha on me sir,” I spat looking at him, my eyes raging with fury rather than glowing with want. “You perfectly know why, and how I know my mate is here so don't you dare start with me.”

When he heard that, his wolf seemed to take over. He let out a growl and took a few steps forward trying to tower over me even though we were both about the same height. Behind him, the three men stood there, paralyzed with fear. I bet no one had ever went against their alpha like I just did. Now they’re afraid to even find out the consequences of what I’d done.

“You will obey your superior,” he yelled through clenched teeth. His hands that were by his thighs were making its way into fists, turning ghost white. He was even shaking in rage. I could tell that that was a pretty good sign to anyone that they’d gone too far, and if they didn’t back down now, they would be in some serious trouble.

Behind me Kiana spoke in a soft voice. “Lucas back down, you retard. As much as your wolf is trying to prove something, you back the fuck down, now. Otherwise you won't even have him as yours because he’ll kill you before that even happens.”

“And if he kills me he will be alone, forever.” I smiled, knowing full well I was right.

Just as quickly as I had said that, the alpha's hand came up, claws bared, as he hit me across the face cutting deep within my cheek. It was that hit alone that seemed to make my wolf crazed, wanting to attack back. I was about to swing at the alpha, but before it could even connect with the alpha’s face, someone else stepped in and took the hit. I had no time to react before I was pushed and pinned down into the dirt covered ground.

“You’re really fucking stupid you know that, Lucas?” Steve growled above me, his face bleeding a little.

Behind Steve, the alpha of the other pack was breathing deeply, looking pissed, but if you looked closely into his eyes, they seemed to simmered down into sadness. He tried to hide it as quickly as he could, as he ordered his men to leave and find this so call Derek guy. They were to find him and tell him to come here immediately while the other three stay back at the pack house. The three men nodded quickly, fear still in their eyes as they took off running towards the direction they had come from. Once they had all disappeared from the site, he turned his back towards us, his eyes directly staring at me.

“Are you asking to be killed or something!?”

I chose not to answer him. Instead Kiana started to speak. “No, he’s not trying to get killed. It’s his wolf trying to assert authority and his big ego taking over.”

“Assert authority? But he’s not an alpha.”

“You're right, he isn't, but he could be. His wolf was just trying to point that part out, especially to his mate.”

“Could be?” he asked, confused. “Mate?”

Kiana was just about to answer his question when I interrupted her. “Will you let me up Steve?”

“I don't know, are you going to do something stupid again and get yourself killed?” Steve asked still not letting me go. Both Kiana and the alpha, whose name I still hadn’t figured out, just stared at us in amazement.

“No, I’m not going to do anything stupid.” I rolled my eyes at him. “Not that I would have anything to worry about.”

“Seriously you’re going to say that even after getting hit? Your face is still bleeding,” Kiana said with a sigh and placed her hand on her hip as she stared at me.

“Yes, I’m going to say that because even after I got hit, he tried to act all pissed in front of his men, but his wolf was hurting,” I said, pushing Steve off, who seemed to lose his grip and fell over next to me. “Isn't that right?”

The young alpha didn’t answer until I had stood up and was facing him almost nose to nose. “Correct,” he grumbled, quickly looking away as heat flared in his eyes. “Can someone please just answer my questions?” he asked, looking at Kiana, instead of me.

“Well—” Kiana started before I put a finger up, stopping her from speaking. I knew she’s probably thinking I was being rude or something, but I wanted to be the one to answer him, and I wanted him to look at me when I said it.

“I can answer for myself. Thank you, Kiana. I’ll take it from here.” He still didn’t fully face me, but he did glance at me from the corner of his eyes. Well, at least this was better than nothing. “I could be an alpha. Actually, I should’ve been the alpha of our old pack but my father had gotten into a battle with the new alpha and lost. Though he wasn’t killed, he was publicly humiliated and turned into a rogue wolf. Our mother is with him now.”

“Why don’t you just take the pack back then? If you’re the rightful alpha, then you have the right to.”

“I can, but the pack is so messed up right now it’s not even worth it. He pretty much has everyone wrapped around his finger and tried to force my sister into mating with him. Plus, he’s pissed that Steve took him down in one punch and walked away without a scratch.” As I said this, Steve tried to show his bravado, puffing his chest out, his hands on his hips. He kind of looked like Superman just without the cape.

He nodded, taking everything I’d said in. “What about the mate?”

“My mate?” I raised a brow. “Well, that just happens to be you.”

At that he started laughing, until a voice sounded behind him as loud as a church’s bell. “Did I just hear him correctly?” The new voice laughed, coming from beyond the forest line.

~Josiph~

"Did you really have to come at this time Derek,” I asked with a sigh.

“Well, Tyler said that it was very important and that you wanted me immediately. He also rambled on about how you’d actually shown anger, and then started clawing at one of them, and then when he tried to attack back, he hit his friend instead.” He then looked at Steve before speaking again, “I’m guessing you’re the friend, and this here.” He looked at me, “Is the one he attacked. The so called ‘mate’.”

“That would be correct,” Steve said, then thought for a second before adding, “Derek.”

“Interesting. Looks like you found—” He stopped to laugh before he said the final word, “her.”

“Can it Derek,” I growled, hearing the fury in my voice at his comment.

Still laughing Derek went on. “What’s wrong Josiph? I mean you’d been looking for months, looks like you finally found your mate.”

“He’s not my mate!” I yelled quickly and noticed how Lucas seemed pretty hurt by the accusation, but he hid it pretty well when he looked away from me to smile at Derek.

“Right.” Derek rolled his eyes, not believing me for one second. “Did you happen to invite them into the pack?” he asked before adding, “I have the pack working on getting a place set up for them, and they would be pretty sad if they did all that work for nothing.”

I shot him a glare. “Then why did you ask them to do it in the first place?”

“So that you couldn't refuse.” He grinned smugly. Derek really knew how to piss me off knowing that I wouldn’t do anything to him.

“You’re such an ass Derek.” I sighed looking back at Lucas, Kiana, and Steve. “Would you all like to stay with our pack for a few nights?” I offered them.

Kiana was the first to answer, and rather quickly at that. “Yes! Finally a place where I can actually stay warm without going all wolf.”

We all laughed at that and Kiana just glared at us, even though she wasn’t really scary.

“We will show you the way. Just follow us.” And with that I turned and headed in the direction of our home. Derek took up the back talking quietly with Kiana who seemed to enjoy his company, while Steve walked in the middle. Lucas though was near the front, a few steps away from me and keeping quiet as ever.

“How long have you guys been out there for? I mean on your own?” I asked Lucas after a few minutes of dead silence. I really hated how things were silence, even though they were already awkward enough.

“Well, this would be our third week I believe. We mostly stayed in hotels at night. Tonight we didn’t,” Lucas said glancing at me in the side corner of his eyes.

“Why didn't you stay in a hotel tonight?” I asked, my curiousness getting the better of me.

“Kiana wanted to find you guys tonight. She knew you were close. But every time we seemed to only pass you guys, it was just an old trail of someone in your pack.”

At that, I nodded since I didn't say anything more after that. We kept walking, passing through broken tree branches that seemed to keep poking at my pants, or ripping my shirt off. It was worse than being in wolf form. At least then, the trees didn’t catch on anything, not even my fur would half catch on something.

It was a rather peaceful walk back to the pack, and when we finally cleared the forest we emerged in front of my parents who had seemed to be waiting for us.

“Hello mother, father,” I greeted each with a nod.

They both smiled at me before looking at the three who were with us. “Glad we could finally meet. We have been hearing greatly about you from the members of our pack,” my father said with a laugh, holding out his hand to shake.

Lucas took his hand in his with a smile. “Glad to finally meet you as well, sir. We’d been looking for weeks trying to find you guys.”

“You knew we were here?”

“Of course. We could scent out a few pack members,” I said, before looking at Josiph. “And one other person. It was still rather hard though.”

“I bet. I would also assume they have completed setting up the house you three would be staying in. Well, at least that’s what Derek ordered anyways.”

At that Derek stepped up. “We will just have to see when we get there. I’ll walk the three of you to the house though, if that’s fine with you, Josiph?”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” I nodded. “Show them around too, why don't you. Also the three of you are welcome in the alpha’s house for dinner. Derek will show you where that is as well. I have a few things to take care of at the office, and I’ll meet you guys when I’m done.”

“Alright,” Steve spoke up for once, while Kiana and Lucas kept their mouths shut. In fact Lucas wasn’t even looking at me, instead he was paying attention to my father. They were having some conversation I didn’t even understand.

“You three ready to go?” Derek asked, mostly looking at Kiana as he spoke.

“Yes! Of course!” Kiana voiced in a really high pitched girly squeak and the two started walking off, chatting amongst themselves, and almost leaving Steve and Lucas behind.

"Well I guess we’ll see you at dinner.” Lucas waved goodbye, indicating to my parents before looking at Steve. “We better get going or we won’t catch up to them.”

“Yeah, and we better watch your sister too.”

Finally when they started to go out of earshot, I faced my father, my mother listening in. “I think I’m in trouble.”

“Why would you say that?” He tilt his head in confusion.

“That young man, Lucas is supposedly my mate,” was my only answer, before I walked away leaving no time for reactions or replies from either of my parents. I didn’t want to hear the shock, and disgust from them.  Instead, I headed for the alpha’s house and entered the front door ignoring the few people relaxing in the wide-open space living room. I ran towards the winding staircase, well the one east side that led up to the landings. From the landing you could pretty much see everything, including the night sky and forest. And right now, I needed an escape, and I needed to be alone.
