Chapter 6

~Josiph~

I was standing in the kitchen just waiting for my father to actually say something, but nothing came. Instead he refused to even look at me, and that hurt even more. I knew what he was thinking though, and what he wanted to say. He just couldn't get the right words out of his mouth. It was almost torture waiting for him to speak, but he said nothing. Even my mother said nothing and she was standing next to him. Knowing her, she thought that if she spoke, everything would be ruined and the whole conversation would be lost. I wasn't exactly sure what to say either, but I knew I had to say something. Anything would be better than the silence that was going on.

Taking a few breaths I finally decided this was it before letting the words spill from my mouth. “I know what you’re going to say father,” I started and waited until he was looking at me before I continued. “And before either of you actually say anything I would like to say one thing. As you probably already heard Lucas is my mate or at least that’s what my wolf keeps telling me. I’m not sure what his wolf tells him, but I’m pretty sure he says the exact same thing to Lucas. I’d never asked him about it though. The second thing I would like to say is that I’m nervous as hell, and I have no idea what to expect of this.” I paused, before saying the rest. I knew just how much these last words would mean to my father, but I wasn't saying them just for him. I was also saying them for myself. “As much as I would like to hide away like I used to when I was a child, I know that I can't do that anymore. I have to face this head on some time or another even if it scares me.” Even though I was scared, I knew I wasn’t alone. Everyone has fears, including alphas. Just look at my father, even though he was considered one of the strongest during his time, he was deadly scared he would mess up somehow. All alphas have this fear, including me.

At the end of my speech my father smiled. “At least you’re able to admit it even to me.” He stopped, probably thinking about what he’s going to say next. “I know that you’re nervous as well. I can see it in your eyes, but I can also understand it as well.”

“How?”

"For one you’re a new alpha, so that alone is probably stressful. Two, there’s not one book in the world that would even describe anything about two men, being mates. I don't even think it happened in history before.”

“Then why me?” I asked. “If it has never been in any wolves’ history, why would it happen to us?”

“I’m sure you’ll have to find that out on your own because even I, have no idea why, but there’s a reason, I’m sure,” my father answered. “Why don't you start by talking to Lucas? Maybe he has some answers that even he doesn’t know he has, and even if he doesn’t, you’ll figure things out eventually.”

“Yeah. There’s a reason for everything, my son,” my mother spoke up in a tiny voice acting shy about saying anything at all. I could understand why because my mother didn’t speak much, except when she’s spoken too or when she’s needed for a scolding of a young female in the pack, or even a youngster at school which she’d taught.

“I know there is, mother.” I smile toward her. “I just wish they would give me a hint on why this is happening.”

"Eventually you’ll get your hint, but for now you have to figure things out on your own,” she said before adding in an even lower voice, “for now just speaking with Lucas and figure things out together. Even if you don’t officially mate which you shouldn't do for a while anyways, but you can still talk.”

I nodded. “I know, mom. I guess I should probably speak with Lucas then. The sooner, the better. Just to have an understanding and figure things out, together.”

“Yeah, that would be the best,” both of my parents said though you could hear my father clearly, and my mother sounded more like a squeaking mouse trying to run from a person.

“I’ll let you guys know how it turns out I guess,” I said with a laugh as I stood up from leaning against the counter and walked across to the other side of the room and into the dining room where the four of them were sitting and eating dinner.

“You want to join us?” Kiana asked. She was the first of the group to notice that I was there, though I could have sworn Lucas had noticed me too but he looked away quickly, trying to hide the fact that he knew I was coming in the room.

“No thanks,” I answered with a smile and she just shrugged before going back to eating and talking with Derek. “Actually, I came in here to ask Lucas if he would accompany me upstairs where we would be able to talk,” I said leaving it an open question rather than a demand that he had to listen to.

When I said that everyone stared up at me including Lucas who had a forkful of food just hanging on his fork in front of his mouth. Looks like I had caught him just at the right time.

“Um…” Lucas began before finally letting the words sink in and placing his fork back on the plate in front of him. “Sure, I'll join you. That’s not a problem.”

“Thanks.” I grinned and watched as he stood up from the chair and pushed it in before he came up next to me and the both of us headed out of the dining room and up the stairs to the office. When we were both in the office standing, neither of us wanted to sit in the perfectly good chairs that were placed around the room. “I wanted to ask a few things if that’s alright with you?” I asked kind of looking at the room but most of the time I was looking at him, waiting for an answer.

“Yeah, sure. I’ll try to answer as best as I could,” he finally voiced. I was grateful that he spoke, because I sure didn’t want to be in a room in awkward silence for Gods know how long.

“Alright, good.” I crossed my arms, leaning against the desk. “First off, I wanted to talk about what happened with your eyes earlier today. If you’re alright with that?”

“Oh, that,” he said as he put his hands behind his back trying to stand up straighter. Not sure how much straighter he expected to be though. “Well, that only happens in my family when they find their mate. Our eyes turn a bright white color and our wolf tend to try and be dominant.”

“Why?”

“Very few people know the reason for this, though those who do, don't tell the rest of the family.”

“And do you know?”

“I know a little, just not as much as Kiana does.”

“And how much does she know exactly?”

“She knows pretty much everything, but you might as well give up on trying to force it out of her because she won’t tell you. Actually she’ll just do the opposite,” Lucas answered with a small laugh.

“Opposite? How?”

“She would probably take more defense in protecting it. Mostly because our old pack will probably try to use it against you. I won’t explain why, either. Not yet anyways.”

“When though?”

For a second he bit his bottom lip as he thought about it before finally settling with his answer. “When we feel more safe and welcomed. We have a lot on our hands and that’s including the wolf who is trying to force her to mate with him. We would rather not have that happen here so things will just have to wait for now.”

“Is it something bad?”

At that he laughed taking a step closer to me. “If it were something bad would you allow us to stay or would you rather have us leave?”

“That’s not what I’m asking.”

“You're right. It’s not what I’m asking. But what’s your answer?”

I sighed, moving to finally sit in one of the chairs, moving a little bit away from him. “I really don’t know any of you that well yet, so if you ask me that question later on then I’ll answer. If it’s really bad, I wish you would actually tell me what it is.”

“It’s not as bad as you think. I’ll tell you that at least.”

“Okay.” I nodded. “That’s good enough for me.”

Lucas nodded as well and said nothing after for a little while. “Was there anything else that you wanted to know?”

“Just a few things, actually,” I said with a pause before I continued on. “Can you tell me everything about how you lost your title as alpha?”

“Well, my father lost it for the family, but yeah.” Lucas lowered his head. “It started pretty much when Kiana was born. There was a young man at nineteen years old named Lucian. My father took him in when he was young and he probably regrets it to this day. Anyways, when Kiana was born no one actually knew she was special until she hit about nine years old and puberty hit. It was then that Lucian took action, and we found that out later on. He started planning everything right down to the wire about how he would kill my father just to get Kiana to mate with him. He knew everything about her and wanted her power like most people do.” His eyes shined with anger as he talked about this Lucian guy. I was about to ask what power Kiana had, when Lucas jumped in.

“When Kiana hit eighteen, he was thirty-eight years old, and yeah before you say it I know it’s gross as hell considering he’s so much older than she is. Still he tried. He was fifteen years younger and more agile then my father was. Plus, somehow my father had gotten hurt two days before the fight which we were all pretty suspicious of.” Taking a seat in one of the chairs across for me, he eyed me. “When my father didn’t expect it, he jumped in and requested for a battle between the two. I guess it was then that we realized something was wrong. My father agreed to the battle and just outside our compound the battle took place. About halfway through the battle my father’s injuries started to really hurt which we kept telling him to lay off of his injury, but he refused to listen.” He stopped, probably expecting me to say something. Instead, I said nothing but waved my hand, telling him to continue. He nodded. “Long story short, afterwards my father lost, and Lucian became the new alpha. The first thing that he did was kick my father from the pack, and being my father he left with dignity. Lucian also said that both Kiana and I were to stay in his pack. We couldn't leave with our family so in terms he was separating us. The final thing that he requested was to have Kiana mate with him.”

“What happened after that?”

“Kiana was put under house arrest for two days. I wasn’t allowed anywhere near her because Lucian knew that I would try something. After the two days were up, he actually allowed her out of the dark and told her that if she ever wanted to see the light again then she should agree to mate with him and forever be his mate.” At the end of that he smiled but it wasn’t for what he had just said. It was towards his next words. “She actually told him that he could kiss her little white ass.”

I smiled too, laughing loudly. “He put her back in the dark didn't he?”

He nodded sadly his head leaning down, his arms crossed on his legs. “He did, for another four days. He fed her, but barely. I think it was mostly just to keep her alive but not to make her strong enough to fight back. Anyways, when the four days were up he let her out again, this time she agreed but under one condition. She wanted to see me. Lucian didn't like that too much but he agreed under the condition that the two of them would be watched. He picked Steve to watch us without actually realizing that Steve liked both Kiana and I. Kiana told me how much she wanted to escape but was too afraid to go up against him. She asked me to go up against him, and I would have, if Steve didn’t tell me that if I even stepped foot inside the alpha house, I was going to be killed on sight. They had a ton of his followers patrolling the house every night. Steve was among them though he was mostly there to get friendly with Lucian. That’s when Kiana actually looked at Steve to go up against Lucian. Being Steve he actually did, and both Kiana and I watched that night. It was the night that they were supposed to be mated for life too. The mating didn't happen though. Even though Steve lost, supposedly Lucian couldn't move and he went to bed that night forgetting about the mating ritual. That’s when we actually made our escape.”

“That was five years ago, though.”

“Yeah it was five years ago. It was also the only way we were able to escape. We could have taken the pack over, but they had a death warrant on our heads in the pack. That’s why I can't take over. Almost everyone wants us dead in the pack except for a very few people but they hid that part otherwise they’ll be killed too. Lucian is now actually looking for us from what I know. We have gotten a few calls from members who we’d trust. They actually told us what he had been doing. For five years, he has been to nearly every pack looking for us, and we believe that he’s headed this way.”

“What do you plan on doing when he actually comes this way?”

“By then we’re hoping to have a family that would protect us. We don't mean to put everyone in danger, but he isn't good with knowing that people would do something for others even if it’s against an alpha. Plus three against a whole pack isn't exactly good odds. I would be killed and so would Steve. Kiana would be forced into a mating, and probably rape by the man. He’s about forty years old now.”

“And Kiana?”

As if he knew what I was talking about he went on. “Kiana is only twenty-three years old and has many years left on her. I really don't want to force her into a life that she would hate forever. It’s just not right.”

“You’re correct it’s not right,” I agreed, “But what could I do?”

“Kill him,” was his only answer.

“What makes you think I could kill him?” I asked in shock that he would even say that.

“We didn't come this way for no reason you know Josiph,” Lucas said, “Someone told us to head this way and meet up with a pack. We didn't know what pack, we just knew that the alpha's name was Josiph, and that he’s looking for his mate. At first we figured Kiana would be your mate. You know since it had never been heard of for two males to be mated. Not until, well you know...with my eyes.” He stopped to finally look at me after such a long time. “Anyways, we figured it was Kiana as well because if it was her then her mate would protect her. No mate wants some other alpha trying to take their girl. it wasn't her, though. Instead it was me, and I don't even know why.”

“I don’t know either, but somehow we need to figure that out.”

“How though?”

“There has to be something that would give us a hint on what’s going on, and why we were mated rather than Kiana and I,” I said out loud, standing up and pacing across the wood floor in the office. I could feel Lucas staring at me as I paced back and forth and in a way it made me self-conscious.

“Why are you pacing?” he asked and I looked at him as I still paced. His eyes followed my every move going back and forth as I stepped on the wood, causing me to move closer and further away from him.

“I’m trying to think.”

“And this is how you think?”

“Yeah, this is how I think. Is there something wrong with it?” I asked and stopped pacing just in front of him and stared down at him.

For a second he thought about it and bit his bottom lip before he actually answered me. “No,” he said shaking his head as he answered, “nothing is wrong with it. I was just wondering.”

I nodded and continued to pace.

“Though I would like to say—you’ll probably think that this is weird, but it’s rather cute. That’s what my wolf keeps telling me anyways,” he admitted, with a husky laugh before he looked away.

I laughed a little as I stopped pacing again to just stare at him. “Well, I hate to admit it but it’s rather cute that you would be embarrassed to say—” I stopped short as I realized what I was saying. “Um...I mean...ignore that I even said that.”

“No can do, sir. You said it and now it’s etched into my brain.” He smiled and I couldn't help but smile back at him. Dang it! What was going on with me!?

Shaking my head frantically, I tried to move passed everything and back at the conversation at hand. “What are our plans as of now?”

“There’s a few actually, I believe,” he stated quietly sitting in the chair.

“And those would be?”

“Well, we sort of have to wait until Lucian shows up. I’m still waiting on a call to find out where they’re now, and that could pretty much be anywhere depending on the direction they went.”

“That's one thing, but you said there’s a few. What are the others?”

“The second is pretending that none of this happened. I mean there’s almost a zero percent chance that Lucian will actually find us, so we could just move on with our lives.”

“Is there a third?”

“When isn't there a third choice?” he asked, but never actually waited for me to answer as he went on. “I’m guessing the third choice could go along the lines of a happily ever after fairy tale ending kind of thing.”

“Which would end up being?”

“Us mated and together forever and ever,” he nervously whispered, putting his hands together and blinking his eyes repeatedly as if that would put in some kind of effect. It actually did though—just in a funny kind of way and I couldn't help but laugh. He laughed too as things seemed to relax a bit more between the two of us.

“Were you always the joking one in the family?”

“Sometimes. Other times, I can be rather serious even if that got me killed.”

“Oh, I believe that, and by the way that reminds me,” I started remembering that fight from earlier. Dang, do these days go by so slowly now. “What happened before?”

“With that fight?” I nodded for an answer. “Well, Kiana told you most of it I believe, and I was supposed to be alpha so another alpha doesn't exactly scare me much.”

“So it was mostly your wolf talking there?”

“Just like it was also your wolf talking when someone disobeyed your orders. It was also your wolf who was hurt when you cut into my face. By the way is that still there?”

“It’s mostly healed actually. Sorry about that,” I honestly told him, a bit sadly as I moved to the seat across from him.

“Don't be. Like my sister and Steve said. I was kind of trying to get myself killed in the first place. I shouldn't have gone up against you if I wanted things to go nicely, but with me things never go nicely.” He laughed a deep little chuckle after that.

“I’m thankful that Steve got in the way, though. Otherwise I’d have an identical cut on my face and I’m pretty sure a lot of members would question what happened.”

“Eh.” He shrugged. “They probably wouldn't even see it. Knowingly it would be gone by the next morning and no one would care much except for the three who were there. Though, words might be spread around the pack members,” Lucas said with a smile.

“Probably, unless I told them to not say anything to anyone.”

“You would really try and scare the poor guys into not saying anything? Don't you think you torture them enough?”

I smiled at that before answering, “I barely ever yell and scream. I mean what you seen today was a first since I became alpha.”

Lucas became wide-eyed. “You're serious? You have never yelled or anything at your own pack?”

“I’m serious. My father was the same way. We’re friendlier than most alphas. I mean a lot of them are nice and get along great with their pack members. Some not so much.”

“I could name one actually.” He was probably talking about Lucian.

“Well, I can name none actually. All the alphas I know, I’d grown up with. I went everywhere with my father when I was younger and actually enjoyed it. I was able to meet a lot of great people and friends too.”

“That’s a good thing then! At least you know that someone has your back.”

“That’s true. My father is closer to them so they would almost do anything for him if he asked. Usually, it depends on the request I think.”

“That could be understandable, and I think it’s about time that we get going. Steve and Kiana are probably downstairs wondering what’s going on up here.” Lucas stood up, stretching his legs. “Your parents and Derek are probably wondering the same thing.” Again Lucas laughed.

“You’re probably right about that, so we better get going,” I said doing the same thing as him. “Oh, and you can talk to us about anything. If you have any concerns or anything at all just let me know.”

“Alright, sounds good. Thank you,” Lucas said, grinning ear to ear.

I grinned back, and headed over to the door before answering him. “That’s not a problem.” From there, the two of us walked out of the room together and onto the landing above the main room noticing that everyone was at the bottom of the stairs, looking up and watching us. It was as if they all expected something to happen.

As if.
