Chapter Five

It was Friday, and like promised, her classes ended early. Skylar had spent the entire week paying 100% of her attention to her classes, going to the library to study, dealing with hostile classmates, and Sarah's mood swings. The girl was sometimes on the verge of being nice and then her mood quickly changed and she decided to be extra rude. But Skylar was getting used to it.

Knowing that she would have the entire weekend to get work done, she decided to take into account what Ian had said to her the first day of classes; Stanford was a big school with many different people. So she decided to dress in a casual outfit of skinny jeans, flannel, and combat boots and made her way out to look for some fun.

She knew that there was a poetry slam somewhere on campus, there was probably some party being held, or some hipster gathering. The first thing she had to do though, well that was go for a coffee run to a coffee shop.

It was there that she met a pink-haired girl named Cindy, she happened to be a barista part-time in between studies. Cindy was studying to get her master degree in art.

"Lets just say I'll probably be living in my grandma's basement after graduation," she had said jokingly.

But Cindy had invited Skylar to a little get-together at one of her friend's place, and that friend just so happened to not be living on campus but at a little apartment not far from campus. Skylar was not about to pass on that, because after all, she didn't want to constantly be buried in her work, but she also wanted to enjoy herself.

Cindy's friends happened to be just four other people, all into art or literature, and they were all working to get their major or masters. Ronnie was a tall guy with a lanky build, had long straight hair that was uncombed and slightly greasy, and his hands were stained with various different paint colors. Gwen was a blue-haired girl with a lip-piercing, stretched ears, and had a very model-like body. She was gorgeous and Skylar was envious. Ash was the gay one of the group of friends, he was stereotypically stylish, very handsome, and really nice. Skylar knew that she would get along with him. Jason, the host, wore all dark colors, had dark, messy hair, and piercing blue eyes that could make any girl melt. He was more serious than the rest. Skylar would be lying if she said she didn't find him attractive.

"Well, guys," Cindy said, "this is Skylar. She's a law student."

Gwen raised an eyebrow. "You're a law student? Why are you hanging out with us?"

Skylar felt slightly awkward. Gwen had a point. She probably had nothing in common with any of them. She had wanted to make friends and have a little fun, but who was she kidding? The only people she had anything in common with were other law students and they were all too serious about the profession they were pursuing.

"Oh, come on, Gwen, give her a break," Cindy said, rolling her eyes. "She's cool."

"Well, you are very much welcome to chill with us," Ash said, giving Skylar a big smile. "Some of these people can get quite tiresome." He threw a playful look towards Gwen but she just gave him the middle finger.

Jason seemed to be a wine fan and offered everyone a glass. Cindy picked out a Billy Idol vinyl from Jason's collection and put it on the record player. Soon, the small living room was engulfed in Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. She had to admit that Jason did have good music taste.

Looking over his vinyl collection, she noticed that she might have something in common with him. Music. AC/DC, Skid Row, Metallica, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, David Bowie, Queen, and more flashed before her eyes and she was amazed. His collection was impressive.

"See anything  you like?" came Jason's deep and soothing voice, his eyes looking at her curiously.

"You have really good music taste," she confessed.

He gave her a small smile. "Thank you. Is there anything you'd like to play?"

She shook her head. "I'm fine with Billy Idol."

"So you're a law student, huh?" he said.

"Yeah," she said.

"You don't look like the type," he said. "Why is it you want to be a lawyer?"

She chuckled a bit. "I don't know. It just really appeals to me. I don't have a specific reason, but, you know, when ever I thought about what I wanted to do with my life, being a lawyer was just the first thing that came to my mind. I love the profession for some reason."

"Interesting," he said thoughtfully.

"What are you studying?" she asked.

"I'm actually double-majoring in English and psychology. Next year I'll be working towards my masters in psychology."

"Psychology," she repeated. "And why is it that you're interested in that?"

Now he was the one to chuckle. "The human mind and behavior amazes me. I just want to learn more. I would love to be a therapist and help others out."

"And why English?"

"I love literature and I may want to write a book someday," he explained.

Well, he seemed to have everything figured out. Skylar envied him. He knew why he wanted to the things he was working for. He knew exactly why it fascinated him so.

Later Cindy ended up ordering Chinese food for everyone while they watched Zombieland. When Skylar went to the kitchen to help herself to some more wine, Ash followed her.

"You, young lady, are very lucky," he said.

Skylar was confused. "What do you mean?"

"Do you know how hard other girls have worked just to get Jason to say hi to them?" he asked. "He likes you."

Skylar wanted to laugh. She barely knew the guy!

Ash didn't find anything funny. "I'm serious."

"He and I barely know each other," she said. "How could he possibly like me?"

"Uh, duh! You're attractive, he's attractive. You're both smart and cool people. You'd make a great couple."

Skylar did think Jason was attractive and a really nice person, but she just didn't see herself dating him. When she thought about her perfect man, she thought about a slightly older guy who was nice and caring and charming and Italian. And yes, that sounded a lot like Ian. And maybe she wanted her man to be like him, and that was possibly due to the fact that he had grown on her and she had seen just how amazing he was. It had really set her expectations of men higher.

Thinking about Ian made her wonder just exactly what he was doing at the moment.

Ian was working as fast as he could so that he could go home to his daughter soon. Office hours were over, but he had stayed overtime to finish up his work. He wanted to spend his entire weekend just focusing in Emily. He already didn't spend enough time with her as it was.

A small knock on his office door distracted him from his work.

"Uh, come in," he said, focusing his attention back to his computer.

"Ian," said a female voice.

Looking up, he noticed that it was Katherine George. She was a good-looking woman that got around with the other male lawyers of the firm. But she was very picky, only wanting the best for herself. Ian had heard a lot of things about her but quickly dismissed them as she was good at her job and that was all that mattered.

"Yes, Miss George," he said. What was she still doing at the firm?

"You work too much, Ian," she said. "You should really take a break. I was wondering if you would like to go get a drink with me at this really nice bar a few blocks away."

Oh. Ian was taken by surprise. She was clearly interested in him and he didn't know how to feel about it. She was a hunter and now he was her prey. He didn't really take kindly to the idea. He was her boss and that was highly inappropriate.

"Oh, I can't," he said. "I have to finish up here."

"Just one drink," she persisted.

"I really can't. Plus, my daughter is waiting for me," he explained.

"I'm sure your daughter can wait."

That got him kind of mad. His daughter was the most important thing to him in the entire world.

"Actually, she can't. I promised myself to devote as much time as possible to her."

Katherine sighed. "Ian, I thought you were interested in me."

Ian was taken aback. What had made her think that?

"Your cousin Kyle came to me yesterday. He told me you wanted to take me out but you were too shy to ask."

I'm going to kill him, he thought. Stupid Kyle. He was serious about wanting Ian to get with a girl. The bastard was safely on a plane back to Chicago at the moment, probably believing that he had done a good deed.

"Katherine, I am so sorry. My cousin Kyle really wants me to go out with a woman, and I'm sorry he had to bring you into this. I'm just not looking for anyone at the moment."

Katherine looked offended. "Oh. Okay. Well, I'll be going now." She was out the door before Ian could say anything else.

Well, that had been embarrassing on both parts.

When Skylar got back to  her dorm, she was not surprised to find Sarah fully awake, buried in her studies.

"Well, I take it you were out having fun," Sarah said sarcastically.

"I was, actually. You should try it some time."

Sarah rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to her work.

Before getting into bed, she received a text from Ian.

Skylar, I was wondering if you would like to go get lunch with me tomorrow. I'll pick you up.
