Break in Training
Chasing Kiarra: The Finale
Aidan
It was a crisp morning. The sun was waking up beyond the mountains.
Kiarra wrapped herself tight in her sweater, but I only wanted to rip it off her.
We had a job to do, so for now, Iâd have to settle for undressing her with my eyes.
âYou ready?â
She shivered, but the warmth in her smile was beautiful. It had been a while since Iâd seen her smile like that.
âI think so!â she chirped, but there was still some hesitation in her eyes.
âOkay, no time like the present! Letâs see what you got!â
She took a deep breath and squinted her eyes. We stood there for a moment, but after a minute or two, I couldnât help it. I burst out laughing.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â
She opened her eyes and glared at me, âWhat? Donât laugh at me!â
âIâm not trying to, but I do wanna know what the eye thing is about,â I smirked. I could tell she was pissed off, but I was curious.
âLook, Iâm trying, okay? I didnât exactly get a manual for this.â
âI know, I know,â I replied. I wanted to go easy on her; she still had much to learn.
âOkay, try again, maybe this time, think of something that will get you pissed off.â
âLike last time?â she said, a little more hesitant than I expected.
âYeah, sure, itâs easy.â
âEasy for me to get pissed, you mean?â she pursed her lips.
âSomething like that,â I teased again, âcome on, get serious.â
Kiarra didnât say anything else, but she turned away from me.
I waited a few more minutes, but there was still nothing.
âKitten?â
âOh, for fuckâs sakes! What!â
âCan I get a status update?â
âWell, Iâm pissed off. Do you see any wolf coming out?â
She had a point, and I didnât know what to do to help her.
âCome here,â I commanded, âlook me in the eyes.â
She did as she was told, and I took her face into my hands.
âThe last time you shifted, can you remember what you felt?â
Kiarra bit her lip and looked away, âNot really. A lot was happening.â
âFair enough, but there must have been one powerful emotion that tipped things in your favor. What was that one thing?â
She pushed me away, âI'm sorry I canât, Aidan.â
âWhat? What do you mean, Kitten? You have to!â
She stormed off toward the pack house. I ran to catch up, âHey! Okay, stop. We had an agreement!â
Kiarra turned on me so violently that I was genuinely surprised she hadnât shifted on the spot.
âI said Iâm not doing it!â she screamed.
âIf you donât, youâre not going to the Apex pack, Kiarra! I donât care!â
âI hate when you do this!â
âDo what? If you donât learn to shift, how can I be sure you can protect yourself?â
I felt a growl escape my core. I meant it. I wasnât letting her leave if she couldnât do this one thing.
âYou donât get it!â
âYouâre right! I donât get it! Why donât you explain it to me? What do you have against shifting?â
âItâs not that! Iâm not against it. I justâ¦â
Her voice trailed off, and she was obviously fighting tears back.
I wasnât getting anywhere, and it pissed me off.
Kiarra fought me on everything; it was just her nature.
But this, this was non-negotiable. If she wonât do it, I need a good reason why.
âKiarra, can you meet me halfway? Iâm not a fuckinâ mind reader.â
She wrapped her arms around her tiny frame, the steam from her breath cascading around her faceâs perfect features.
âI couldnât protect you or Angela! What makes you think I can protect anyone?â
âWhat do you mean! It was your first time, Kitten! You didnât even know you could shift!â
âAnd it did me no good at all! I was bumbling all over the place like an idiot, Aidan!â
I saw that she was deeply traumatized by the experience. Maybe I was wrong; there was no getting around this.
âWhat kind of werewolf am I?â she asked, her voice cracked.
The last thing I wanted was to make her cry. Iâd done more than enough of that.
âOkay, say you donât shift. Ever. Then what?â
âWhat?â she asked, confused. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou tell me, Kitten. Iâm not going to force you. I canât,â I shrugged. âItâs a choice. No one can make you shift. It doesnât work like that.â
âI have no clue; I guess Iâll be the no-name brand of werewolf, Aidan,â she returned with the thickest sarcasm Iâd ever heard.
I couldnât help myself; I laughed.
âItâs not funny!â
âNo,â I sighed, âitâs not, but I guess if you wonât, you wonât. I still love you. It changes nothing.â
âAnd Apex Pack? You said I wasnât going to go.â
âThereâs ways around it.â
I had her laser-focused attention. âAngela. Sheâs your beta.â
The look on her face told me that she wasnât too excited about that idea either. The two of them hadnât spoken since the kitchen table conversation had started.
âAngela? Go with me? Pretty sure Jack wonât want that.â
âGood thing for you, Iâm the alpha,â I laughed. âLast time I checked anyways.â
I pulled her to me. âHow about we go for a ride?â I asked as I nuzzled into her cinnamon-scented hair.
âA ride?â
âYeah, you can hop on top; youâre good at that,â I laughed as she turned and swatted at me. âCome on, youâll like it, I promise.â
âI always do,â she teased, climbing on my back.
The speed and freedom felt good as we ran through the woods. It wasnât what I had in mind for our lesson, but I was happy to be with her.
I thought about the amount of bullshit that had gone down in the last few weeks, and it hit me that Kiarra would be gone.
All my life, Iâd waited to meet my mate.
Just like that, Alpha James and his Apex Pack had come to claim their prize. What a prize she was. I heard her laugh with a child-like joy.
Right then, right there, I felt my heart break.
