Poisoned Connection
Chasing Kiarra: The Finale
Aidan
I paced the office as Jack did his intel.
âI canât get in touch with Angela, and sheâs not answering me.â
I didnât have the heart to say it, but I knew I had to.
âI think she was captured, Jack, Iâm sorry.â
âCaptured? What the hell is going on?â he yelled. His temper was getting the best of him again.
âShe stumbled across their little setup when I was talking to her,â I said.
I wanted to give him the details, but I wanted him to stay calm.
âJack, look, I get it. Trust me, I do. Weâre gonna get her out of there, man.â
He didnât look convinced. âWhat else, Aidan?â
âShe got cut off mid-sentence. The mind-link was cut.â
Even as I said the words, I knew that her chances of survival had just been cut dramatically.
âOkay! I got something!â he called out. His eyes still zeroed with a focus on the computer in front of him.
âOkay, shoot.â
âWell, looks like the Kendricks have some curious folks in their employ,â he said, clearing his throat, âcheck this out.â
He turned the monitor to face me. âWhat the hell is this?â
âThis, Alpha, is a list of sorcerers in the territories. Theyâre nomadic, and theyâre for hire.â
âI thought witches had covens, isnât that how it goes?â
âIn the old days, yeah, but now I think itâs easier to roll solo.â
âYeah, they must be making good money,â I agreed, âI wouldnât want to share the spoils of war if I didnât have to.â
âSo, what are we thinking? The Kendricks have a witch working to persuade their wolves?â I asked.
âNo, I think they have her in place to persuade one wolf in particular,â he replied, turning the monitor back toward him.
He could tell I was out of my element.
âSee, only so many witches still cast these types of spells. Thatâs how I was able to narrow it down.â
âItâs weird thereâs a database, Iâm gonna be honest,â said Jack as he got up to help himself to a drink from the fridge.
âAgreed,â I added, looking to him to debunk the mystery.
âWell, think of it like paranormal social media. Thereâs far fewer of us than there are of them.â
âDo we know which is which?â I asked in earnest.
âNot specifically, no. I can see that Belladonna is a prevalent option for these matters.â
âShit, sheâs practically advertising it,â I noted.
âWell, thereâs no one to stop her, and who knows how long sheâs worked for the Kendricks. Sheâs probably made some serious bank over the years.â
âYouâre a rockstar, man! Okay!â I said, feeling a little more inspired now that we knew what we were up against, âWhatâs next?â
I wanted him thinking, sharp, on his toes. But he remained silent.
âCome on, man! We need some good ideas! What do we do with this?â
âWell,â Jack began, âthis Belladonna creature is probably using a potion or something, right?â
âYeah, but Kiarra isnât stupid, and if Angela got to her in time, sheâd know better than to accept anything funny.â
Would she, though? I cringed inside as I recalled my words to Angela.
I breathed out heavily. Jack looked up. He never missed a beat.
âWhatâs up? What are you thinking?â
âI told Ange to avoid telling Kiarra anything.â
âYou did what?!â Jack screamed, âWhere is your head? Sorry, Alpha, but this is a fuckinâ garbage call!â
He wasnât wrong, âI know,â I nodded, âbut if Iâd sent her to Kiarra and stirred the pot, who would be backing them up? We canât get a hold of Angela now, can we?â
It was enough for Jack, at least for now.
âWhoâs the closest to Kiarra? Rose, right?â Jack asked. I wanted to say yes until the chocolate wolf popped into my mind.
âThe sister. If anyone will slip my mate something, it will be Melody. Sheâs one of the big reasons Kiarra even went.â
âFuck, this is getting worse and worse. We have a goddamn witch, no way to warn our mates. How the hell are we going to get out of this one!â
âJack, man, come on, take a seat.â
The low growl in my belly resounded in the room.
âJack, thereâs a way, trust me. At least we know where weâre going.â
âWhat about this sister? Is she one of these purest weirdos?â
âAngela mentioned the sister, and I know she was suspicious about her.â
âBut why? What was in it for her?â he pushed.
He was right. What ~was~ in it for Melody?
âShe was arguing with the parents; maybe it was jealous sibling bullshit? I donât know,â I replied.
That was the truth. It was hard to figure any of this out. I sat in silence and considered Melodyâs role in all of this.
âYou know, now that I think about it, thereâs always been something off about Melody,â I said, ânot in the way youâd think either. It was like she went to fuck with her parents right from the start.â
âWhat do you mean?â asked Jack.
âWell, the Kendricks knew the consequences for unauthorized breaches in the territory. They tried to sweep it under the rug, but she was a kink in their otherwise perfect plan.â
It was only a theory, but I was willing to grasp at any straws I could.
âAll Iâm saying is, maybe sheâs the wild card.â
âAn ally?â Jack asked.
âIâm going to tell Kiarra,â I suddenly blurted. I missed her and needed to hear her voice.
~âKitten? Plans need to change, thereâs some serious shit coming down on everyoneâs head.â~
â~Aidan? Not again! Please donât ruin this!â~
~âKiarra, you need to come home. Iâm serious!â~
~âAidan, will you calm down? You just saw me. You know Iâm okay! Iâm just having tea with my sister.â~
That was it. The link was cut.
It was happening in real time!
They were about to poison my mate against me!
