Owned By A Sinner: Chapter 34
Owned By A Sinner (The Sinners Series)
Considering I slept in Liamâs bed for the first time, I didnât wake once, and there were no nightmares.
And he woke me up with kisses.
Needless to say, Iâve fallen head over heels for the man.
After getting ready for work, I head downstairs but stop halfway when I see Liam in the foyer, where heâs talking to Will and Declan.
âStill canât believe it,â Will says. âNever thought Iâd live to see the day you fall for a woman.â
âShut up,â Liam growls at his friend, then turns his attention to Declan. âYou donât let her out of your sight.â
âAye, boss.â
âNo sign of Finn?â Liam asks.
âNothing. Canât track the fuckerâs phone either. He probably disabled it after calling you,â Will replies, a frustrated frown settling on his forehead.
Liam mutters, âFuck. I want him found.â He looks at Will, his expression grim.
Seeing Liam in mafia mode, my eyes widen.
âLucaâs funds cleaned and transferred?â he asks Will.
Will nods. âYeah, itâs back in his account.â
âGood. And the shipment of incendiary grenades?â
âReached Nikolas at three this morning.â
Liam takes a deep breath, adjusting his tie. âAt least thatâs done.â
Butterflies erupt in my stomach, because seeing Liam in his role as head of the mafia is really, really hot.
âWe have new soldiers joining,â Will informs Liam. âWhen do you want to hold the ceremony?â
âAfter weâve dealt with Finn.â
Liam glances toward the stairs, and it has me moving. âMorning,â I say, hoping he doesnât realize I eavesdropped.
âMorning.â Will smiles at me. Declan just nods.
Liam holds his hand out to me. âReady?â
I place my palm in his, eagerly pressing into his side. âYes, boss,â I tease him, making Will chuckle.
Liam looks down at me, the corner of his mouth lifting in a hot smirk.
Does he know I listened in on their conversation?
He presses a kiss to my forehead, then moves his mouth to my ear, murmuring, âYou donât have to hide when Iâm talking business.â
Busted.
I nod, feeling relieved that heâs not hiding this side of his life from me.
We all step into the elevator, and only then do I think to ask, âWhat do I tell Denise?â
Liam glances down at me, his thumb brushing over mine. âWhatever youâre comfortable with sharing.â
âIs it okay if she finds out about us?â
âSoon, all of Chicago will know,â Will mumbles under his breath.
My head snaps to him. âWhat do you mean?â
âWeâll put out a press release today that the most eligible bachelor has been snatched up.â
Holy shit.
âYou fucking do that, and you better run,â Liam growls.
Will just shrugs. âGot to keep up the pretense of successful CEO.â
The elevator doors open, and stepping out, thereâs a group of men waiting â my guards and the ones for the penthouse.
Frowning, I look at Will again. âYouâre not going to mention my name, right?â
Liam stops walking and tugs on my hand. âWould it bother you?â
âAh⦠Itâs not that it would bother me to be associated with you. I just donât want my name out there.â
Will shakes his head. âItâs bound to happen. We wonât be able to keep it under wraps for long.â
Liam leads me to the SUV, opening the back door for me while Will and Declan get into the front.
This is different.
Liam slides in next to me, unbuttoning his jacket.
Leaning close to him, I whisper, âI like you better in sweatpants.â
He chuckles, takes my hand, and settles my palm on his thigh. âI like you better naked.â
âOversharing,â Will mutters as he starts the engine.
The other three guards pile into another SUV, following close behind us as Will drives us to Byrne Enterprises.
When Will stops right in front of the entrance, I figure Iâm going to have to tell Denise the truth seeing as she has a front-row view of us all getting out of the SUV.
âEnjoy your day, Mr. Byrne,â I tease as I start to walk away, but Liam grabs hold of my hand and yanks me back.
I plow into his chest, then his mouth is hot on mine. The kiss is downright possessive, and when he finally lets me breathe, he smirks, âYou too, baby.â
With flushed cheeks, I walk into the lobby. Denise is watching me with raised eyebrows.
âMorning, Mr. Byrne, Mr. Gillen,â she greets Liam and Will, and as soon as they head for the elevators, she widens her eyes even more at me. âSomeone has a lot to tell me.â Her eyes snap to Declan. âCan we help you, sir?â
âHeâs with me. Declan. Denise,â I quickly introduce them. âWhere can I get an extra chair for him.â
âI wonât be sittinâ.â He moves to the wall, where heâll have a clear view of the lobby and outside.
âHeâs with you?â Denise asks.
Taking out my phone, I place my bag in the bottom drawer. I sit down, then reply. âYeah, heâs one of my guards.â
Denise just blinks at me.
âSo, a lot has happened,â I start, which has her nodding. âA little over a week ago, Finn attacked me, but he got away. Liam arranged guards to protect me until Finn is found,â I give her the short version.
Denise gapes at me. âHoly crap on a cracker, woman. When exactly did this happen?â
âThe Friday of the board meeting.â
âIâm so sorry,â she breathes. âAre you okay?â
I nod, my lips curving up. âThanks to Liam.â
âSo you and Mr.-Donât-touch-me?â
I let out a chuckle, my cheeks flushing. âKinda happened fast. My headâs still spinning.â
âIâd say so. Iâm still trying to get Will to take me to dinner,â she mutters, then her eyes widen. âI forgot to ask him how heâs holding up. He lost a good friend.â
Right. Will had to cancel their date.
The pang of grief hits, and I let the wave move through me. âIt was my dad. He had a heart attack the Saturday after the assault. The funeral was this past Monday.â
Deniseâs face fills with shock and compassion, then she pulls me in for a hug. âIâm so sorry, Kiara. Shit, youâve had a crazy week.â Letting go, she asks, âIs there anything I can do?â
I shake my head. âLiamâs taken care of everything.â
âSo, youâre a couple?â she asks.
âYeah.â The smile returns to my face.
Iâm dating Liam Byrne.
The internal line rings, and taking the call, I say, âKiara speaking.â
âItâs Gina from HR. Please come up.â
âOkay.â Ending the call, I frown at Denise as I get up. âI have to go to HR.â
âProbably to sign a form for the days you were absent.â
âRight.â When I walk to the elevator, it opens, and Will comes out.
âWhere are the two of you heading?â
Two?
I glance over my shoulder and see Declan right behind me. Turning my attention back to Will, I answer, âUp to HR.â
Stepping into the small space, I glance at Declan again.
âYou can relax, Kiara. Pretend Iâm not here.â
Giving Declan a smile, I ask, âHow long have you worked for Liam?â
âSince I turned sixteen.â
âHow old are you now?â
âThirty-one.â Declan looks at me when the doors slide open, reminding me, âYour father trained me, so Iâm more than capable of protectinâ you.â He waits for me to exit, then follows after me.
When we walk into Ginaâs office, she smiles at us. âBefore I forget, Liam wants Declan to have an access card. No restrictions.â
âYou know each other?â I ask, gesturing between her and Declan.
âYes,â Gina answers. âIâm aware of Liamâs other business.â
Okay. Who else knows?
Pointing at a form, she says, âJust sign here for me. Iâm sorry for your loss. Jimmy was your father?â
I nod, and picking up a pen, I check to make sure the form is for the days I took off before scribbling my signature on the line.
Gina gives me a sympathetic smile as she takes the signed document. âThat will be all.â
Walking back toward the elevator, I ask Declan, âWill you be okay standing the entire day?â
He nods. âJust pretend Iâm not there.â
I shake my head, having no intention of doing that. âSeeing as youâll be glued to my side, Iâd rather get to know you. Maybe we can even become friends.â
I really want to get along with my guards.
The corner of his mouth lifts as he waits for me to walk into the elevator. âIâd like that.â
