First Bitten: Chapter 2
First Bitten (The Alexandra Jones Series #1)
âYou got her? Careful, sheâs bleeding out pretty bad. Sheâs lost a lot of blood already. Nathan, press down hard on her wound. Sol, get the first aid kit. Iâll stitch her up for all the good itâll do her. Poor lass ⦠What the hell happened? ⦠Was it one of them? ⦠I didnât know there was any in the area ⦠Is he dead? ⦠He wonât have been alone, thereâll be others ⦠Hey, sheâs coming roundâ¦
âCan you tell me your name, honey?â
I blink up at the blurry figure hovering above me. âWhereâs Carrie ⦠?â
âSorted?â
âYeah.â
âDo you think anyone could have seen you move the bodies?â
âNope, there wasnât a soul around for miles.â
âIt hurts ⦠â
âSsh, donât try to talk. Just sleep.â
âWhereâs Carrie?â
âSleep.â
âBut it hurts ⦠â
âI know it does. Sleep.â
âHowâs she doing, Nate?â
âSheâs sleeping at the moment.â
âYou wanna get some rest? Iâll take over watching her.â
âNah, Dad, Iâll stay with her. I brought her here. I feel like I should be the one to be with her when she passes.â
âShe still alive, Nate?â
âYes, sheâs still alive, Sol.â
âYou look knackered, son. Why donât you go get some sleep? Sol can stay with her.â
âNo. Iâm alright.â
âMind, it shouldnât be much longer now. Iâm surprised sheâs lasted this long, to be honest.â
âMaybe we should just put her out of her misery.â
âChrist almighty, Sol!â
âIâm just saying! I mean, look at her.â
âI know, but I didnât raise you to say things like that.â
âWhat, so weâre just gonna sit by and watch while she dies an agonising death?â
âNo, son, but weâre not playing God either.â
âArggh!! Whatâs happening to me? It hurts! Help me, please help me!â
âItâs okay, honey, weâre here. Sol, go get some more of those painkillers. Nathan, fetch a bowl of cold water and some towels, will you? Sheâs really burning up.â
âThe pain ⦠youâve got to make it stop ⦠â
âI know, honey, itâs gonna be okay ⦠Nate, soak that towel and lay it over her stomach where the wound is.â
âGod, Dad, look at her. Maybe I shouldnât have saved her. Maybe I should have let that bastard kill her and have been done with it, instead of putting her through all of this agony.â
âYou did the right thing.â
âIâm not so sure anymore. Iâm starting to think maybe Solâs right, maybe we should just, you know, end it for her.â
âSol talks shit.â
âI am still here, you know.â
âWell you shouldnât be. Go get those bloody painkillers! Nate, I know you, thereâs no way you could have lived with yourself if youâd walked away and let him kill her.â
âI know, but I just didnât know itâd be like this, and itâs been a day now. Shouldnât the infection have killed her? I didnât think they lasted this long once infected.â
âNeither did I butââ
âArggh! Help me! Please! Help me!â
âIâm here, honey. Sol, where the bloody hell are you with those painkillers?!â
âYouâve gotta make it stop! My bodyâs on fire, Iâm burning. Help me, please!â I grab hold of the blurry figure beside me. âYouâve got to make it stop!â A strong hand untangles mine from their clothing, and encompasses it. âDonât leave me, please.â
âIâm not going anywhere, Alexandra. Iâm staying right here.â A hand brushes over my clammy forehead. âJust try and relax. Iâm going to get something to make you feel better.â
âDad, that morphineâ¦â
âIâm getting it now.â
âI donât understand how sheâs still alive.â
âMe neither, son. Me neither.â
âSheâs going through the transition, though, isnât she?â
âSeems that way, Nate.â
âDo you think sheâs gonna survive?â
âIf youâd have asked me yesterday, Iâd of said no, but now Iâm not so sure. The girlâs a fighter, Iâll give her that.â
âSheâs human, though. I just donât get it, but itâs bad though, isnât it, if she makes it through?â
âWell, itâs not great, son, no.â
A large shadow hovers over me. âHere, sweetheart, thisâll take the pain away.â I feel the needle pierce my skin. âThank y ⦠â
âSheâs asleep?â
âYep.â
âSo she survived, then.â
âLooks that way.â
âAnd the bite?â
âHealed. She has the trademark scar.â
âSheâs changed, then. Sheâs one of them.â
âThe only one. Sheâs in trouble, isnât she, Dad?â
âWe all are son ⦠we all are.â
