: Chapter 30
Marriage of Convenience
I woke wondering what new drug Glen had given me. But as I opened my eyes; the room seemed brighter. Smelled cleaner.
âThere you are, honey. Tell me how youâre feeling?â A middle-aged woman with sympathetic eyes wearing a pink shirt looked down on me.
âWhere am I?â Had I died?
âYouâre in the hospital. Youâre going to be fine.â
Immediately my hand went to my belly. âMy baby.â
The woman, who I realized now was a nurse, put her hand over mine. âIâm sorry. You miscarried. You expelled everything, so we didnât need to do any procedures there.â
I looked around the room but no one was there. Not even Chase. I couldnât blame him for not coming. I was more trouble than I was worth. When he learned about the baby, heâd want to be rid of me for sure. Maybe he already knew, and thatâs why he wasnât there. No one was here. I was alone.
I started to cry and tried to turn over but there was a tube in my arm.
âYouâre on fluids,â she said. âIâm going to ask the social worker to come in. You can talk to her.â
âCan you call my parents?â It was time for me to give in. I was too tired to fight against it anymore.
âSure honey.â
I told her the number, but wasnât sure theyâd even come.
âWeâre going to keep you in her a little longer, then weâll move you to your own room. You rest for now.â
Not having anything better to do, I let her give me something for pain that made me sleepy. When I woke again, I was in a new room.
âSara?â
âMom.â She stood next to the bed. I looked to the end of the bed where my dad stood. They both had disapproving expressions. âYou came.â
âYouâre our child, of course we came,â my mom said.
âI hope youâve learned your lesson. Living in the devilâs temptation just brings ruination,â my father said.
âWhat sort of bullshit is that to tell a young woman just terrorized by a crazy religious zealot?â
I looked up and saw Chaseâs father walk in. âMr. Raven?â Was he there to tell me Chase was done with me? Iâd expected his lawyer, Mr. Lister.
âI beg your pardon,â my father said. âThis doesnât concern you.â
âThe hell it doesnât.â Mr. Ravenâs eyes narrowed studying my parents. âWho are you?â
âWeâre Saraâs parents.â
His eyes grew wide. âDo you condone that young man beating your child?â
âHe was trying to save her. She has to pay for her sins.â
It broke me to know my parents had known Glen was going to kidnap me. Did they know he was willing to hurt me? That heâd harmed their grandchild?
âYou wanted me to marry him. He did this to me.â
âGood lord you wanted that man to marry your daughter?â Mr. Ravenâs voice was incredulous.
âHeâs a good Christian boy,â my father said.
âHe beat your daughter up. What the hell kind of Bible are you reading?â
âSir, can you please leave us? We need to care for Sara,â my mother said.
âNo, I will not.â Iâd gotten the feeling that the Raven family wasnât close, but now I realized that despite their differences, they were loyal and would have each otherâs back.
âWeâll have you removed,â my father said.
âYou can try,â Mr. Raven straightened. He was an imposing man, not just in size but in the way he exuded power.
Just then the door flung open and Chase came rushing in. âSara! Oh God, Sara.â
My mother jumped out of the way as he reached my bed.
âYou alright?â His gaze scanned my face and arms, then came back up. âAre you in pain?â
I shook my head in confusion. âYouâre here.â
âYes, Iâm sorry it took so long.â His hand gently stroked my cheek.
âHe was nearly arrested,â Hunter said as he walked in the room. âFortunately, it wouldnât be for murder. The fuckhead will live.â
âI beg your pardon. None of you have the right to be here, I demand that you leave,â my father looked from Chase to Hunter and back to Chase. Chase moved, turning his body toward my parents as if he was ready to protect me.
âHow is she?â Ash said as he looked in through the doorway. He walked in with Kade following. They were all there.
Finally, my brain filtered back to Hunterâs words. âArrested?â
âHe beat the shit out of Glen. Safe to say he wonât hurt you again,â Hunter said.
âStop!â my father yelled. âAll of you out. Only Saraâs family is allowed.â
Chase straightened looking even more imposing than his father. âWe are Saraâs family.â
âYou are not,â my father said, fisting his hands at his sides.
âIâm her husband. Who the fuck are you?â
âTheyâre her parents,â Mr. Raven said. âI thought I was a bad dad, but this guy is worse. Keep that in mind boys.â
âSara isnât married,â my mother said looking at me.
âI have a marriage certificate that says otherwise,â Chase said.
âI told you it was too late for her,â my father said. âSheâs chosen a life of sin.â
âWhat did you say?â Chase stalked toward my father. Hunterâs guard went up, but he didnât move to stop Chase.
âSheâs full of sin, just as all of you are,â my father said with righteousness.
âI wonât deny that Iâm rotten to the core, but this woman, your daughter, is as good as they come. Sheâs smart and sweet, despite your fucked-up version of love. You need to leave and go home to read the chapters of the Bible that youâve clearly missed. Iâll have you escorted out if needed.â
Hunter stepped up behind my parents. Ash took a position by my mother and Kade by my father.
My parents looked at the imposing men surrounding them.
âWeâre done Sara. We canât abide by this kind of life,â my father said. He took my motherâs arm, but she resisted. There had been many times growing up when I wondered if my mom really believed the stuff my dad spewed or if she went along because she didnât think she could fight it. She looked at me and for a moment I thought I saw sadness and regret at leaving me. But she didnât fight it, and she let my father pull her from the room, and presumably out of my life.
âCome on boys, letâs give Chase and Sara a minute,â Mr. Raven said.
âThank you for coming,â I called.
âOf course, honey. Youâre family,â Mr. Raven said.
When they were gone, I couldnât look Chase in the face.
âSara, baby.â He took my hand, but the endearment made me weep.
âAre you in pain?â he asked.
âYes.â
âLet me get a nurse.â
âNo. Nothing can fix me.â My heart was so broken, I couldnât imagine it ever being put back together.
âOh baby.â He rested his head against mine. âWhat can I do?â
âYou should just go.â
He straightened and looked down at me with his fierce gray eyes. âI wonât leave you, Sara. Not now. Not ever.â
I closed my eyes. âIâm no good for you. You should find another woman who can give you what you want. You can keep the money.â
He flinched. âYou think this is about money?â
I finally turned to him. âIâm bad for your family.â
âNo, honey, youâre not.â
âI lost the baby. I donât even know if Iâll be able to have more. I canât give you what you want.â
He gripped my hand and pulled it to his heart. âWhat I want, Sara is you. I love you.â
What? The fact that he didnât react to the news about the baby made me think he already knew.
âGod, I wished Iâd told you that I loved you sooner. Iâve felt it for some time but have been too much a coward to tell you,â he said.
âWhat about the baby?â
âIâm sad about the baby, but Iâm so happy youâre here. I want us to be real Sara. No more business deal.â
âWhat if I canât have another baby?â
He wiped a tear from my cheek. âNo more business deal, Sara. Itâs not part of this. I love you and want to be with you. If we want babiesââ
âI do want babies.â
âIf we canât make them anymore, weâll adopt them.â
âI think I must have died.â It was the only way to explain my wishes coming true again. Not all my wishes because I still had no baby. But Chase was here saying all the things I longed to hear.
âWhy would you say that? Donât say that,â he said.
âI thought you wouldnât want me anymore.â
âI want you, Sara.â He took a deep breath. âDo you want me?â
I realized I hadnât told him how I felt about him. âYes. I love you. Iâve always loved you.â
âEven when I was an asshole?â
âYouâre not always an asshole.â
He smiled, but it was bittersweet. âWeâll be alright, sweetheart. As long as we have each other, weâll be alright.â
