Those who usually disliked her despised her even more at this moment.
According to how things were going now, it was only a matter of time before Josephine replaced Nydia as the new presidentâs wife.
Nydia was so disgusted with Cade for humiliating her in front of everyone to defend Josephine. He didnât even care to ask why. And the soâcalled âscandalsâ were merely fake news.
Several nights ago, she went to a dinner party, and an actor helped her when she fell. She smiled at him and thanked him. The media added to the rumor and fabricated it to rub the two together. Even though the rumor was clarified a few hours later, Nydia didnât expect Cade to hold onto it.
And since when did the man who cheated on his wife publicly care about scandals? What he did was one hundred times worse than her scandals. But she didnât say that to his face. She couldnât. She dared not. He had something on her.
Nydia took a deep breath, trying her best to maintain her selfâcontrol. She squatted down, picked up the papers one by one, and stuffed them into Josephineâs arms, lazily lifting her chin, âAfter service, remind him to sign this. It ainât cheap to keep a little birdy like you. Heâs gonna need the your
money.â
Josephineâs face went red again, the hatred of being humiliated almost erupting, but she couldnât lose her temper. Not in front of Cade.
So she squeezed more tears. âMiss Sharp, please donât be so mean to him. Thereâs only love between me and Cade. Nothing else.â
Nydia simply ignored her, her spine straightening as she turned around and entered her office.
Seeing her leaving from behind, Cade was frostier.
âCade, are you okay?â Josephine asked worriedly. Cadeâs darkened face scared her.
Cade took back his gaze and let go of Josephine. âIâll have Stuart send you to the hospital.â

âIâm fine. Letâs grab a lunch. Starving will burden your stomach,â said Josephine thoughtfully.
Upon hearing this, Cadeâs anger eased quite a bit, but he didnât have much appetite for lunch. So he softly said to her, âLet me take you to the hospital. Weâll eat after that. Okay?â

âYeah,â answered Josephine sweetly. She held Cadeâs arm toward the elevator, swearing inside to throw Nydia out of Cadeâs world one day.
Nydia may have been exhausted. She collapsed on the office couch and slept the whole afternoon. She didnât even eat the lunch Alison brought for her.
It was getting dark outside when she finally woke up from her extremely long and awful nap. She had been having nightmares with frightening images of her mom and dad jumping out of buildings, weighing her down.
Leaving the empty office, she went to the garage and got her car, driving aimlessly around the city. She didnât want to go home. She stopped as she passed the Empire.
People in Creekheim always liked to gather in bars after work. Nothing was better than drinking and talking with friends after an exhausting workday.
Nydia used to enjoy her freedom at Empire, but that was before her family fell apart. And before she became Mrs. Jackson. Stepping back into Empire now was not quite the same state of mind after all.
She sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. She hadnât talked to the bartender for more than a few minutes when her cell phone rang.
It was a text message from an unfamiliar number. Nydia propped her head on one hand and scratched the screen with the other. And in the next second, she was stunned. Someone sent her a picture. In the picture, Cade and Josephine sat in a beautiful restaurant, raising their glasses and drinking. They looked like a perfect couple.
Nydia knew who sent this to her without thinking. And it bored her.
She sneered, tossing her cell phone aside and guzzling a mouthful of wine.

The wine was too strong. She was choked and couldnât help but cough. Someone patted her back and said, âEasy on that.â
