Chapter 3: Crystal Hats
Protector of Light
Sitting at a small wooden circle table, Trinity bit into her roasted turkey leg. A warm glow fell on Chuckieâs patrons as they ate and laughed around her, the smell of steak filling the air. Philly sat beside her flipping through her book of news, the gift she bought for Trinity between them. Knights of Spirits; she couldnât wait to get home and begin reading it. Of course, she had to get through an evening of shopping first. Taking a drink of water, she looked at Dior who was quietly gazing out the window. She was so unlike herself, Trinity started to wonder if she was ill.
âTrinity?â She flinched as Philly waved her hand in front of her face. âCalling Trinity; were you listening to a thing I said?â
âNot at all,â she said with a smile.
Sighing while shaking her head, Philly put her book away. âI asked if you heard about the attack in Cali Heights?â
âAâ¦oh! I read about it in the paper this morning.â She took another bite of her supper. âThose fiends are still on the loose!â
âItâs scary. Itâs only a matter of time before the attacks reach us.â Philly glanced at Dior before saying, âItâs like a monster of some kind.â
âWhich is why the Protector of Light will take care of them.â
ââ¦What?â
Trinity leaned towards Philly, stars in her eyes. âLike how she saved the kingdom years ago,â she said. âWith amazing magic, sheâllââ
âHowever, something terrible happened, and all Protectors disappeared,â Philly interrupted. âThatâs how your motherâs story ends, correct?â
Trinity crossed her arms. âYour point?â
âSo, even if the legend was true, the Protector of Light is likelyââ
Suddenly, Dior stood up, startling the other two. What scared Trinity more was that her eyes were glowing pink again. âItâs time,â she said. After a few seconds, she blinked, eyes going back to normal. âItâs time to head to Parkies. Letâs go!â
In a flash, Dior was out the door. Trinity glanced at Philly who shrugged and motioned her head to follow. Sighing, she grabbed her book and followed Philly out the restaurant and across the square. Parkies was tucked away in a corner near Atland Villageâs eastern exit. It was fairly new, so Trinity had never been inside before and only heard customers from the bakery talk about it once or twice. Going inside, the smell of flower incense made her nose itch. Pink and purple lace hung from the ceiling, clothes as far as the eye could see. Dior was near the front counter with a girl in a frilly pink dress.
A girl Trinity recognized.
âYouâre that girl!â Trinity said, pointing at her.
Philly quickly pushed her hand down with a nervous laugh. âThis is Marina, the shopkeeperâs daughter,â Dior said. âSheâs a friend of mine.â
âWelcome to our shop,â Marina said in a sickeningly sweet voice. âPlease let me know if you have any questions.â
Trinity had many questions, but before she could speak, Dior grabbed her arm and pulled her to the hat section along with Philly.
Thirty minutes passed on the shopâs clock. Trinity yawned as she sat on a velvet chair. Next to her, Philly drew pictures while Dior tried on her twentieth hat with Marina. As the bell signaling the hour rung, Trinity stood. âI should head home,â she said.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
âAlready?â Philly said with a small pout.
âItâs getting late. You know how my mother is.â She smiled and waved. âUntil tomorrow!â Turning, she made her way to the shop exit. She navigated through the clothes to the front door, the setting sun making the sky outside the windows as orange as the dog boyâs eyes. Trinity wondered if he had ever made it to the schoolhouse, and she decided to ask Skyler about him once she got home.
That is, if she could open the shopâs door.
Frowning, Trinity twisted, pulled, and pushed the knob, but the door would not open. âExcuse me?â she said, turning to the shopkeeper. âIs the shop closing early today? The door is locked.â
The shopkeeper frowned. âThe shop is closing at its regular time,â she said. âThe door shouldâ¦â she wobbled, ââ¦beâ¦â
Two seconds later, she was lying across the counter.
Heart pounding, Trinity raced over to her. âAre you okay?â she said, shaking her shoulder. The woman whimpered a little before opening her eyes.
Her eyes were glowing pink.
âYour eyes,â was all Trinity said before she was pushed against the counter. The shopkeeper smirked as she grabbed her arms and squeezed. âLet go of me!â Trinity shouted. The woman did not listen, so the 12-year-old kicked her in the stomach with all her might. She gagged and fell to the floor. Without another thought, Trinity sprinted to the door. She banged on it with her hands and feet. âSomeone, pleaseâ!â She coughed, the air becoming hard to breathe in. âI needâ¦we need to get out of here!â
Spinning, Trinity raced to the hat section. After more twists than before, she found her friends with their heads down. She grabbed Dior and pulled her over to where Philly was sitting. âWe have to leave,â she said quickly. âThe shopkeeper just attacked me.â
âThe shopkeeper?â Marina said from across the room.
âYes! Your mother grabbed me! The door is locked, too, andââ
Slam!
Trinity gasped as she was pushed against the wall. Her friends held her arms tight, making her wince. âThat hurts! What the heck are you twoâ¦?â
Trinityâs heart dropped as Diorâs glowing eyes stared at her, Phillyâs matching hers. Hearing footsteps, she looked up to see Marina walking towards her, her pale pink eyes sparkling. âI had to make sure there was no escape after my pawn brought you to me, Areiria,â she said with a smirk.
âAâ¦what?â
âYou cannot fool me! I know the power to unlock The Heavenly Star is within you.â Marina chuckled a bit. âYou may have caught me at a bad time this morning, but I wonât let you escape this time. Now,â she grabbed Trinity by the collar, âshow me your true magic so I may prove my loyalty to my queen.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Trinity said as she tried to move. âWho are you? What did you do to my friends?â
âNo more questions!â
With a snap of her fingers, a pink light covered Marinaâs body. The aura went onto Trinity, burning her skin. At the same time, it felt like she was underwater. The sensations made her eyes water as she struggled to keep them open. âYouâreâ¦the one behind the attacks, arenât you?â she muttered. The aura began to solidify into crystal. Out the corner of her eye, Trinity could see the light from the bakery go out. âMamaâ¦Papaâ¦help.â Tears falling, Trinity closed her eyes. âProtector of Lightâ¦please save me!â
âOpen your eyes!â
Hearing a boyâs voice, Trinity opened her eyes. The crystal had vanished as a bright blue light shone on her hand. âWhat is that?â she said.
âIs this it?â Marina said, eyes wide. Warmth spread through Trinityâs body as the light grew when
Zap!
A bolt of blue lightning shot down. Marina, Philly, and Dior were thrown off Trinity who fell to the floor. âIâm not burned,â she said, rubbing her arm. âWhat was that?â
âThatâ¦is the power I seek,â Marina said with a glare. Slowly standing, she stomped towards Trinity. âIn the name of Her Majestyââ
Before she could get within five inches of her target, something pushed her back. The âsomethingâ jumped before Trinity, tail trembling. âYouâreâ¦â Trinity gasped, ââ¦the boy from this morning!â
Brushing off her dress, Marina smirked. âSo, you refuse to learn your lesson, failure?â she said. âYou have practically led me to The Areiria.â
Ignoring her, the boy turned to Trinity. âDo you have a beiria and gets the pendant, it could mean devastation for the world. However, I believe that The Areiria hasnât awakened their true magic and wonât until all Protectors have awakened theirs.â
Reaching into a brown bag, he pulled out a rolled-up parchment. Untying it, he held it before Trinity. On it was a map of the Kingdom of Astellaca. A small blue star was over Atland Village, a smaller white one glowing near Southern Bridge. âThis map led me to you,â Alexander said. âThe next missing Protector is in Southern Bridge.â Before Trinity could question him, he rolled the map back up. âI know you have only just awakened, but with your help, I could find the last four Protectors. Will you help me, Protector of Light?â
Trinity stared at him before looking at her feet, mind racing. So much had happened that day that she wasnât sure what to think. She was the Protector of Light. The previous one, her hero, was truly gone. But because she was, Trinity had her magic.
She was the new Protector of Light.
âOf course Iâll help!â she said, jumping up. âAs the Protector of Light, Iâll defeat the enemy and save the kingdom, just like her! Oh, and no need to call me âProtector of Light.ââ She held out her hand and smiled. âIâm Trinity Starbolt, the eldest daughter of the baker and soon to be hero of the kingdom. Itâs nice to meet you, Alexander.â
He glanced between her face and hand before taking the latter. âLikewise, I suppose,â he said as they shook hands.
