"It was amazing," Tyler gushes like a girl, "We had morning sex, that's why we were late."
I gasp, throwing a massive punch into his arm. "We did not, Tyler. Don't listen to him Eli, he's a barefaced liar."
Tyler cups his hands over my lips, "Cake Batter, stop lying."
Ugh, he's such a pain in the butt. So, I do the only thing one does when someone has their hand around your mouth. I licked his palm.
"Seriously," he laughs, "Your saliva doesn't scare me, Cake Batter."
I grumble under my breath. Licking people's hands are supposed to work! Okay, so if licking doesn't work, I'll have to bite. I try biting his palm, but I just look like a gummy trying to do it, because my teeth couldn't reach his hand. Tyler pissed himself laughing, letting go of my mouth to clutch his stomach.
"It's not funny!" I squeaked, "You're such an assbutt."
"I always thought that it would be Nova and Nate who would date," Eli at the fact. I try to protest, but he shoots me a stern look with his eyes. I close my mouth, waiting for him to continue. He's leaned up against Tyler and my lab table, teetering on the feet of his stool. "I never would have thought it would be you two though."
"We aren't dating," I scowl. Everyone keeps asking that, yet Tyler hasn't even made a move. I wish that I could say we were. That would be something to boast about.
"You two are so stubborn," he exasperates, "Fuck me!"
Tyler scrunches his nose up, "No way, dude. I like vaginas."
"Yeah, we know that," I mutter, rolling my eyes. Tyler used to be quite the player, but it seems as if he's slowed down a lot. He used to date so many girls, but he hasn't dated one since the start of the school year.
"Students!" Mr Francis, infamous Chemistry teacherâhe also has a habit of setting things on fireâburst through the door with a whole stack of papers in his arm. "Who's ready for the test?" He grins, smacking the papers down onto his desk and shoving his shoulder bag under the desk.
Mr Francis is pretty attractive and young, maybe late 20's even. The girls really like him. I wonder why. I only found out his name late last week, since he either didn't introduce himself or I wasn't listening. I'm thinking it was more of the last option, but I wouldn't admit that.
While Mr Francis gets one of his favourite students to give out the papers, I open my bag and get my pencil case out. I grab out a pencil and eraser since I'm known for making mistakes even with the easiest of words. I always use pencils for tests, otherwise there would be scribbles all over the paper.
"Hey Nova," Tyler lays half down on the desk, his head directly under mine while I shuffled through my pencil case. "Can I borrow a pen?"
I roll my eyes, flicking his forehead with my thumb and middle finger. I hand him a pen that works, and throw my bag back down onto the ground. Tyler gets up from laying half on the desk, and starts writing his name down on the Chemistry test paper. I do the same, making sure to write November Lockheart instead of Nova, or else they will refuse to mark it. Our school doesn't accept nicknames on test papers.
I power through the test, while I see Tyler struggling. Eli is scratching the back of his head, probably thinking that he should've studied for it last night. I didn't need to study, because I always study a week before the test, so I know that I have it in the bag.
I hand mine in after Lucas Rivoli, the smartest kid in the class, followed by a pale-looking Tyler. I nearly laugh at his expression, but I realise that if I do I'll get in the poop for it later.
"Did you fail?" I whisper to him after we are seated back at our desks.
"Maybe," he cringe-whispers, "I'm hoping for a pass."
I'd been tutoring Tyler, but he always found a way to get out of tutoring, and we'd always end up watching a movie, playing Xbox or purging on food from my fridge and cupboard. My mom had set Austin and me the daunting task of getting groceries, meaning that half the load of food in our fridge and pantry consists of tacos, pop tarts and junk food. I threw in a bag of apples, just in case mom screams and tells us we didn't buy anything healthy.
It's not like my mother eats at home much, she's usually always out somewhere, same as my dad. I've had to cook dinner most nights these past weeks, while Austin with setting the table and cleaning.
"Should have studied," I sang lightly.
"Well, I would have studied, but you were there," he smirks.
Oh, shit. Duh, Nova. I completely forgot about that. "Ha," I scratch the back of my neck, "Whoops!"
______________________________________________________________________________
"I can't believe you did that," I stood my ground, hand on hip, shooting daggers at the blonde haired girl in front of me. "Not only did you fool me, but you betrayed me and have planned to do this for years. That's so low, it's not even funny."
Allie gulps. Her I'm-better-than-you façade dropped as soon as she saw Tyler and I walking to her table to confront her. Soon, Allie was nervous, itching to leave and cowering at the sight of Tyler's glare.
"I-I," she stutters, "I didn't mean to."
"Bull shit," Tyler crosses his arms over his chest. I feel quite flattered that he offered to help me deal with Allie's bitchy deal with Mr Devil, aka Hayden. "Look at you, Allie. You tried everything in your will to make Nova as miserable as possible, but in the end, you're the one who is miserable and begging for forgiveness."
"I'm not going to say it was worth it," Allie finally found her voice. Albeit shaky, she had stopped stuttering. "But I won't say that I didn't enjoy it, either. You go around acting so innocent, Nova. You're so naïve and can't even see what's happening around you. I'm jealous of you. I'm jealous that you're so ingenious, and you don't even have to try. I have to do so much just to get an ounce of attention, yet look at you!"
I was lost for words. I didn't think Allie was jealous of me, I thought she hated me because I am Nova and she is Allie. I couldn't wrap my hands around her words, because I was too shocked and flabbergasted to say anything. But, before I could even muster up a word, Allie had left. She stormed out of the Cafeteria in a flurry.
Students weren't interested at first, but they turned to watch her leave with curious expressions.
"Jealous?" I echoed, "Why would she be jealous of me?" I say as I'm seated back at the lunch table. Tyler is beside meâas per usualâwith Emily and Nate in front. Austin is on the other side of me, which is surprising because he doesn't usually sit with me. He says that it's embarrassing sitting next to your sister.
"Because you're Nova," Tyler nudged me, "You don't need to dress like a tart to get guys attention. You also don't need to wear a lot of makeup. Actually, you don't need to wear any makeup to attract any guy. You could be wearing a potato sack and people would still be envious of you."
I was lost for words, yet again. I looked at Tyler wide-eyed, a feeling of perception wavering over me. "Oh, shut up," I rolled my eyes, "Hurry up and buy me my pizza, I'm starving."
It was the only way to get rid of this super awkward subject. I hate being complimented, I never know what to do or say. Like, do I say thanks? Can one girl get any lamer?
"I know what you're doing, but fine," he gets up from the table, "Because you promised me to buy you food after our hot sex last night."
Pain in the ass.
"Voy a arruinarte , bitchacho (I will ruin you, bitchacho)," I yell out after him. He turns around with a cheeky smile, blowing me a kiss, to which I pretend to flick away. It feels like a repeat of the first day when he did that. It's crazy how much has changed since then.
______________________________________________________________________________
True to Tyler's words, he did end up buying me McDonald's and cake batter after school. It was a sweet gesture, especially since I didn't even ask for the McDonald's. Even though it is ridiculously greasy, their frozen bubble gum drinks, chips and hamburgers are still good enough for me.
Now, Tyler, Austin and I are both sitting on the trampoline at the back of my house, eating our McDonald's. I put my ice cream in the freezer, since it was starting to melt.
"So, when is your first game?" Austin asks Tyler with his mouth full of chips. I cringe in disgust, he's such a feral. Definitely not related to him, I swear.
"Next week," Tyler says. Except, his mouth isn't full of food, because he swallowed first. My parents taught Austin and me manners, but Austin is a pig whether or not anyone scolds him. "Against Halston. I heard that the new Quarterback is one of the best they've ever had. Harvey, I think his name is. Other than him, most of the really good players have graduated."
I continue eating my food while the two of them talked.
"Guess what!" Austin exclaimed after we'd all finished eating. "So, you know how I want to be an actor?" I nod. "Well I auditioned for a few TV shows and movies, I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to be disappointed if I didn't get in."
"Get to it already," I groaned. I want to know if he got into one.
"You're talking to Mr Hollywood Hotshot right here," he gushed, dramatically posing. "I'm the led actor for some new teen movie coming out next year."
"No, seriously," I squealed in excitement.
I can't believe he got it! Well, I can. He's an amazing actor, and he's wanted to be one all his life, so I've never been more proud of him now, because he fulfilled his life goal. Austin has been auditioning for roles in movies and shows for a while now. He has gotten gigs before, but they had only been small roles, but nothing as large as this is.
"Good job, brother," Tyler slaps Austin's back with a huge grin. "I knew you would get it."
"You knew?" I turned to Tyler, gaping at him a little.
"Yeah, we are best friends, of course he would tell me," he smirks.
"No, he didn't," Austin rolls his eyes, "But, I did hint it to him a little. I used him to video my auditions for me. Because, I know that you can hold a camera steady for shit, and Nate would breathe too loudly into it."
I chucked lightly. Of course Nate would. He and I are horrible with cameras. He always makes too much noise while I forget that I'm videoing and end up taking footage of the ground instead of what I'm supposed to be doing. I get too caught up watching, that I forget that I'm supposed to be using the video camera in my hand for a purpose.
"I'm so proud of you," I try to hug him, but he pushes me away. "Aw, come on little brother, give your big sissy a hug."
"Hell no!" Austin laughs, shooting off the trampoline and running inside. I'm not bothered to chase after him, so I stay on the trampoline with Tyler.
"He'll get us famous, you know," Tyler winks at me suggestively. "I heard you singing in the shower once, and damn," he whistles, "You should sing more."
"No way," I shake my head, "I don't sing in front of people. Too embarrassing."
"But you have a good voice," he pouts. "One day, I'll make you sing in front of me."
"You want to bet," I challenged. I don't like singing in front of people, because I feel like they're too busy judging me, and that feels downright horrible. I don't have the best voice; it is just average in my opinion. I like singing Ed Sheeran, because I don't have the voice for Taylor Swift song's or anything. My voice is too scratchy for those type of girly songs.
"Probably not, look where our last bet took us."
I agree, nodding my head. It had its perks and disadvantages. One perk would definitely be that we have gotten closer. Never in my life would I have thought that I would enjoy Tyler's company, but I guess the tables had turned. The good thing is that I don't mind. I judged a book by a cover, and I'm glad that I ended up reading it.
"Yeah," I drawled, "I'll sing in front of you the day that you profess your undying love for me."
Tyler's eyebrows rise, "Well, wouldn't want to do that. I would rather listen to goats scream than your voice."
I narrow my eyes at him. Of course he would do that. Tyler laughs at me, running a hand through his hair. He didn't brush it this morning, so it's still a little bit messier than per usual. I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket, so I pull it out to check the message that I'd just gotten.
I'm coming over for the night. We are dying our hair tonight! â Emily
I laugh out loud. Tyler looks at me curiously, but I just shake my head, saying Emily. He's used to Emily's weird behaviour, so he just smiles lightly, lying back on the trampoline.
I HAVE CAKE BATTER ICE CREAM. I REPEAT. I HAVE CAKE BATTER ICE CREAM. BOOGER BOUGHT IT FOR ME â Nova.
Nothing makes the world go around better than cake batter ice cream.
"Cake batter," Tyler calls out to me. Speak of cake batter, and the devil appears. Well, I guess I just called myself the devil. I'm sure other people wouldn't disagree though.
"Yeah," I answer while I reply to Emily's fan girling.
"I better go," he sighs, "Mom is having family dinner. Because Georgia's wedding is next Friday, they're doing last minute arrangements."
"Good luck," I snort out a laugh. Georgia and his mother together are a nightmare. It's like Bridezilla times two.
"I'm going to need it," he grimaces. His eyes wander down to the shirt I was wearing, "You can keep it. Looks better on you than it does on me, anyway, Cake Batter."
I blush slightly, "Are you sure? What if you want to wear it though?"
"Why would I want to wear it when you look hotter in it than I do," he winks, jumping off the trampoline, swiftly landing on his feet. "Can I at least have a goodbye kiss?" He points to his cheek with his lips puckered.
Oh, fuck it.
I lean over and kiss his cheek, but just as I was about to lean back, I bite it for good measure. His skin was soft under my lips, but I couldn't get a good view of his face because I had my eyes closed.
Tyler groans, "Don't do that again."
"Why?" I try and lean over again, but he pushes my face away. "Butt face."
"If I was a butt face, then you would have just been kissing my ass," he smirks. I burst into laughter, getting his pun. I didn't even think of that, so it's funny how he thought of it. "Oh, and you also bit it."
"Oh, shut up," I push him away with a shove. "I'll see you tomorrow doofus."
"Right back at you," he blows a kiss.
Instead of flicking it away, I catch it, holding it up proudly. He laughs at my gesture, but continues walking out of my backyard. "Bye," I whisper as he walks out the side gate, "Ass butt."
