Chapter 289
When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 289
âSeriously?â I murmured, baffled. âWalt for me to get off work?â
What kind of drama was that?
âA friend dropped me off earlier, I donât have a car,â He extended his wrist toward me as he spoke, showing me his watch. âYouâre about to clock out, too. Mind giving me a lift back?â
âI can call you a cab.â I pulled out my phone, but he frowned slightly and said, âI never ride with strangers.â
I sighed helplessly inside, Fine then. Guess the prince has his quirks
I had nothing to say âThen wait here.â
I turned and walked into my office, and it wasnât long before Christine sneaked in.
She teased, âWhatâs with the Ford heir hanging around here? Canât seem to leave?â
âLooking for a free nde,â I answered, somewhat resigned.
Christine sat across me, leaning her elbows on the desk, her hands propping up her face.
âI noticed the Myers ladies seemed pretty wary of him. Maybe you should try and get on his good side. Could come in handy if you ever need a favor.â
âForget itâ I dismissed the idea without a second thought, âDo you honestly think anyone can manipulate him?â
Gregory might appear carefree, but he was sharp. Nobody could fool him,
Christine wagged her finger. âNo, no, not like that. I mean, genuine friendship
âGet back to work, will you?â I handed her a piece of leftover cake effectively silencing her, âPretense doesnât equate to sincerity.â You might fool others, but not Gregory.
âAh!â Christine mumbled through a mouthful of cake and left. Halfway out, she tumed back, rushing to my desk, âDidnât you say it was time someone dealt with Dorothy? I saw her today, looking all fine and dandyâ
âI look into it.â I had nearly forgotten it in the chaos of recent days.
But that didnât mean I would let it slide. An opportunity missed was an opportunity wasted.
When I finished up and looked up again, it was dark outside. Through the officeâs floorâtoâceiling windows, Gregory was still there, engrossed in his phone, not a trace of impatience.
I didnât take him for the patient type.
I gathered my things and headed out. âLetâs go.â
He yawned, his patience seemingly worn thin, âAbout time, With your low efficiency, two clients would keep you busy for a year.â
That was so much for a good temperament.
I didnât bother explaining
Once downstairs, he slid into the passenger seat like it were his car.
I merged into the traffic before finally asking. âJarrod agreed to do me a favor. Can you check in with him for me? See how itâs going?â
Gregory tapped his fingers idly against the window sill, cutting to the chase. âGoing after Dorothy, arenât you seared?â
I had hoped to keep him in the dark, but he was already onto it. And quite possibly, he had put a stop to my plans.
I gripped the steering wheel tighter, my tone cold, âAre you planning to protect your godâsister by teaching me a lesson first?â
âAre you always this prickly?â He glanced at me indifferently, âYou lash out at anyone who gets close.â
I paused, stunned,
The friendship between Gregoryâs family and the Myers family traced back generations, and his longâlost fiancée was from the family. By all accounts, they were closer to him than I could ever be.
Hesitantly, I started, âSo youâ¦â
Before I could finish, Susanâ call came through!
On the other end, she was livid, âJane, did you set someone on Dorothy? How dare you, you malicious girl? Sheâs hurt, a young girl, and youâve got the nerve!â
