Chapter 309
When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 309
*Jane, Allen just received the divorce papers we filed,â Thomas said, unable to hold back a warning. âBut I ran into him when leaving the hospital. He looked pretty rough and might cause trouble for your aunt.â
âI see, thanks. Iâll head over right away to check on things.â
Cheryl was in the critical phase of her treatment, and considering how stress could affect the stomach, the last thing she needed was a family feud.
I ended the call and returned to the private room, whispering to Christine, âChris, can you take over here? Somethingâs come up with Aunt Cheryl. I need to check on her.â
Her expression shifted to concern. âWhat happened? Iâll go with you.â
âItâs probably no big deal,â I reassured her with a pat on the shoulder, âJust keep everyone entertained here, okay? No need to spoil the mood.â
After saying that, I grabbed my bag, said my goodbyes, and headed out.
Mark quickly got up. âYouâve been drinking. Let me drive you.â
âSure.â I knew he was there for the dinner because of me, so it made sense heâd leave if I did.
While walking to the car, I asked, âAre you sure you can drive?â
âHavenât even had a chance to start my drink,â he said with a light laugh.
Reassured, I climbed into his car. When we arrived at the hospital, the groundâlevel parking was packed, so Mark had to search for a spot in the underground lot.
Worried about Cheryl, I hurried ahead. âIâll go up first.â
Mark nodded. âIâll be right there after I park.â
Exiting the elevator, I immediately heard shouting.
Allen was at the hospital room door, ranting, âCheryl, if you have the nerves, open this door and face me! Do you think you can file for divorce? And using that twoâbit lawyer your niece found to scare meâ¦â
The door swung open.
I hurried over, finding Cheryl looking better, âAunt Cherylâ¦â
When she saw me, her tense face relaxed slightly, âJane, what brings you here?â
âI⦠I came to check on you,â I said.
Allen was fuming when I showed up and started blustering, Jane, donât you know itâs a sin to destroy one marriage? After decades with your aunt, you want to push her to divorce me, huh?â
Cheryl immediately made it clear that it had nothing to do with me. âJaneâs not involved. I want the divorce myself!â
âAnd who found you that lawyer? Whoâs paying for your treatment now, if not her? Iâll repeat it. If you want a divorce, fine, but remember, Iâm entitled to half of everything!â Allen shamelessly declared.
I looked at him with disgust. âWe havenât settled last timeâs score yet.â
He was involved with Margaret in drugging me, which was utterly despicable.
âWhat are you talking about?â He shifted uncomfortably, âI donât know what youâre talking about. Last time, you came to me. That was on you.â
âFine, then let me make myself clear. My finances are none of your business,â I said, visibly frustrated. âAnd stop bothering Aunt Cheryl. Let her recover in peace!â
âHuh, Iâd like to see how you will make me leave. Iâm not going anywhere today,â Allen postured, playing the perfect scoundrel.
âThen enjoy your vigil,â I said, attempting to bypass his goons to enter the room. Suddenly, he blurted out in desperation, âDidnât you want to ask me if itâs true that youâre not a Webster?â
