Chapter 43
When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 43
If she had approached me with this question a while back, it might have stirred something in my heart.
But now, having come to terms with the harsh truth that Bryant never had any feelings for me, I found myself devoid of any desire to press her for answers.
I simply looked at her, cool and detached, âIf youâre so sure of yourself, why keep hounding me like a madwoman?â
Crazy she was, storming into my office first thing in the morning, acting like the wronged wife confronting her husbandâs mistress.
Seeing my unflustered demeanor, Margaret seemed to panic, not waiting for my inquiry. before triumphantly declaring, âItâs because of me.â
She leaned over my desk, hands bracing the surface, looking down at me like a victor, âJane, if it werenât for me, he would never have married you! You wouldnât even stepped one foot in the Ferguson Mansion!â
Her words tightened my grip, a strange, choking sensation spreading around my heart.
Her lips curled in satisfaction, her arms crossed, âIt was Timothy who threatened him using me. If Bryant didnât marry you, Timothy would have used his influence to have me exiledâ¦â
I already knew he didnât love me, but hearing this still cut deep.
So, marrying me was just an act of desperation for someone elseâs sake?
A wave of sadness hit me, but I quickly shoved it aside and glared at her with conter âIs that so? Well, it seems you should be thanking me for agreeing to marry Bryant. Otherwise, where would you be now?â
Exiled, no doubt!
Her expression froze, then turned to rage, her teeth clenched, âWhere do you get off being
so⦠soâ¦
âCut the attitude.â I frowned, brushing my hair behind an ear, âYou could at least show some gratitude instead of snapping at me. It only shows how ungrateful and heartless you are.â
âJane!â She looked like she wanted to kill me, but fell silent, her gaze fixated on my e breathing turning rapid, her fists clenched tight
my ear, her
âSo, you were after these earrings all along?â
âThey were his gift to me.â I cut in, deliberately provoking her.

As expected, Margaret grew even more infuriated, her voice harsh, âImpossible! Besides, youâre about to divorce. How could you shamelessly accept such expensive gifts?â
âYou said it yourself, weâre only about to divorce. Which means we havenât yet. Whatâs wrong with accepting a gift from my husband?â
âJane, how can you be so shameless? They were meant for me! He promised them to
me!â
âThen go and ask him for them.â
I had no intention of getting entangled with her any longer, intending to head to the
restroom.
The pregnancy was taking its toll, with nausea, drowsiness, and frequent urination-I was experiencing it all.
Suddenly, she lunged forward, grabbing my arm, her other hand reaching for my ear, âTheyâre mine, give them back!â

I didnât expect her to lash out so violently, the pull on my ear a sharp pain. Not wanting to escalate the situation, I tried to placate her, âLet go, Iâll take them off for you!â
But, of course, I had no intention of handing over jewelry worth millions so easily.
The moment she loosened her grip, I pushed her away. She wasnât expecting my move and ended up falling to the floor with a loud, startled scream.
Concerned she might continue and harm my baby, I turned to run.

But as I did, the door burst open, and I found myself locked in a gaze with a pair of deep, anxious eyes-a stark contrast to the confrontational demeanor he normal Margaret.
Behind me, Margaret sat on the floor, a picture of misery, crying as if her heart break.
âBry, it hurtsâ¦â Her voice was suddenly tender, almost making me doubt whether she the same person who had just violently tugged at my ear.
Bryant, with an icy aura, strode past me to scoop Margaret into his arms. âWhere did you hurt yourself?â
