His voice was calm, âHey, Jane, are you home?â
âYeah.â I sniffled, trying to sound casual despite the urge to cry, âWhatâs up?â
âReally?â
âWhy would I lie?â
I tried to keep the conversation light, âDid you see someone who looks a lot like me or something?â
This time, I wanted clarity.
âNo,â he chose to hide the truth.
But I pressed on, âWhere are you? Havenât sorted things out yet?â

âIs it work-related?â I asked with a laugh.

I took a deep breath silently, âWhen will that be? Are you still coming to the concert tomorrow night?â
âIâll be there.â This time, he didnât dodge the question, giving a definite answer.
I looked up at the ceiling, letting the tears fall, âOkay, Iâll wait for you.â
