Chapter 85
When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 85
By the time I walked her home, the night had already cloaked the sky in its inky embrace.
Worried that she might not take good care of herself these next few days, I decided to stay over at her place.
The next morning, over breakfast, Christine kept sneaking glances at me.
I couldnât help but laugh. âWhatâs up?â
She hemmed and hawed, then straightened up, âUh, about that night Bryant got, um, drugged, your phone suddenly died, and I never got the chance to ask you.â
Confused, I asked, âAsk what?â
Leaning in, she flashed a mischievous smile, âDid you guys, you know, do it? With that kind of drug, it must have been quite the experience, huh?â
I was halfway through my pancakes when her question caught me off-guard, causing me to choke. I knew of her tendency to drop bombshells, but it still took me by surprise every
time.
Coughing, I tried to regain my composure, âNo, we didnât have sex.â
She handed me a napkin, looking skeptical, âReally?â
âOf course, not. Iâm in the first trimester of my pregnancy, how could we?â
I cleaned my mouth, tossing the question back at her nonchalantly.
Still, the memory of that night made my cheeks warm.
Christine grinned suggestively, âWell, if you really wanted to, there are plenty of ways.â
I felt an inexplicable guilt.
âAnd how did he get over it? Donât tell me a cold shower actually works?â
Christine muttered to herself, then her gaze dropped to my hand, teasing, âOr did you, you know, lend him a⦠hand?â
Even though it was just the two of us, she lowered her voice, imbuing her words with a hint of scandal.
âChristine!â
vall
I blushed furiously, lunging to cover her mouth âWhat are you even saying? Have you no shame?â
She burst into laughter, looking at me as if shed figured it all out, âCome on, is it true?â
âJust eat your breakfast!â
1/2
âThatâs a yes, then!â
âGood lord, canât you keep quiet even when eating?â
I stuffed a piece of toast into her mouth, and she managed to suppress her laughter, âOkay, okay, my bad.â
After swallowing, she suddenly said, âYou know, now that I think of it, Bryant does have his redeeming qualities.â
âWhat?â
âRather than hooking up with some random woman, he came back home to you for⦠assistance. That means the baby canât be his. He wouldnât even touch Margaret, so how could she be pregnant with his child?â
The first part of her statement was too much for me, but the latter caught my attention.
Still, these were not my concerns anymore.
I reminded myself to view him as my soon-to-be ex, and not to get emotionally entangled
again.
âYou might not know this, but Margaretâs been dragged through the mud.â
Christine leaned in, showing me the office gossip group chat, âEveryone knows about her pregnancy now, and theyâre not holding back. Look.â
âGosh, and to think I once wondered if she was our CEOâs wife. Now sheâs not only the other woman but also pregnant.â
âPoor Jane, her husband slept with another woman, and now thereâs an illegitimate child to inherit the wealthâ¦â
âI knew it from the moment she joined the company, with that trashy vibe, how could she ever marry into a wealthy family?â
âDisgusting, Iâve always hated home wreckers the most!â
âTo knowingly be the other woman, how!
can you get?â
The group chat, with its five hundred members was a unanimous chorus of disdain.
