When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 99
| froze for a second, glancing instinctively at Bryant.
He looked as calm as ever, his eyes soft and warm, holding me close in a way that screamed anything but âweâre here to get divorced.â
The hall floor was dry, contrasting sharply with the storm outside. I gently pulled away from his embrace, my lips pressing together. âNo, weâre here to file for divorce.â
âOhâ¦â The staff member looked genuinely disappointed, âItâs not easy for two people to come together, and you seem on good terms. Why decide on a divorce? Itâs a big decision. Donât act hastily. Once thereâs a crack, itâs hard to mend.â
I looked down, feeling helpless. âYou might have it backward. Cracks donât appear because of divorce. Weâre here because we couldnât mend those cracks.â
Few couples would head down this path if they werenât at their witsâ end.
Seeing no point in persuading further, the clerk sighed. âFine then. The rain has kept most folks at home. Weâre all at your service.â
âThanks,â I said, heading to the nearest available employee. âHi, weâd like to process a
divorce.â
âGot all the necessary documente
âYes, here they are.â I handed over my documents and looked at Bryant, still standing. âYours?â
He seemed lost in thought. His perfect face clouded with mixed emotions, and he said in a rough voice. âYeah, got them.â
âHand them over, please.â The clerk reached out, but Bryant didnât move, his hand gripping the document envelope tightly, veins standing out on his hand.
âBryant?â I urged.
âHmm.â He finally responded, a flicker of pain in his eyes, but under my insistent gaze, he handed over the documents.
The clerk frowned. âAre you both sure about this? If thereâs any doubt, you might take some time to think it over.â
âHeâs sure.â I spoke calmly, âOur marriage could hurt his darling at any moment. Heâs thought it through.â
Bryant closed his eyes briefly as if to concede. Yet, only I could see his clenched fists, the emotional turmoil beneath his calm exterior.
But my resolve didnât waver. Hadnât Bryant made his choice as well? Why did he playing

âAny children? And have you agreed on how to split your assets?â the clerk asked as he flipped through our documents.
âNo children,â I said, the words tasting bitter. âThe assets are divided as per the agreement. I only want the house.â
âAh, but you havenât signed the divorce agreement,â the clerk gave it to me. âAnd whatâs_ written here doesnât match what youâve said. Go over it and come back once itâs signed.â
âOkay.â Taking the agreement to the side, I was puzzled. I had signed it before handing it to Bryant.
Frowning, I glanced at him, then back at the document. It wasnât the agreement I had prepared. He had changed it. In addition to the Riverview Estate house, there was also that ten percent share in his company.
Licking my lips, I looked at him. âI said I only wanted the house. I donât need the shares.â
Having a place to live was enough for me and my child. I could take care of us. The point. of the divorce was to make a clean break, not to be tied down by shares that would require us to see each other frequently.
Bryantâs jaw was tight, but his voice was firm, almost gentle. âItâs rightfully yours.â
âThe shares belonged to your mother, didnât they? She probably meant them for your future wife.â
