Chapter 70
Raised by Vampires
ROSE
I felt like the air had been sucked from my lungs. I raced down the stairs and burst into the tiny kitchen we had long left abandoned. Demetrius was hot on my heels.
âRose,â he reached for me. I recoiled, hissing at him. He hissed back at me, grabbing my arm and slamming me against the countertops. He pressed himself against me, pinning me in place.
âDemetrius,â I snarled.
âSheâs my daughter too,â he snapped back. âI am just as afraid.â
I blinked up at him. âHow could you tell him?â I asked gently. Demetrius stepped back, keeping his large palms resting on my upper arm. He traced small circles.
âI had to, Rose. There was no point in hiding it. Eleanor was found alive and well. Obviously, someone helped her. I didnât want anyone else to be blamed for my actions.â
âAll the sameâ¦â
Demetrius pursed his lips, his moss-green eyes boring into mine.
âLetâs not worry about me right now,â he suggested.
âI cannot lose her again, Demetrius.â I felt my voice breaking, bloody tears pricking behind my eyes. His arms wrapped about my body tightly.
âI know. We wonât. Aric has her. He will protect her. He always has,â Demetrius reminded me.
âThey were always made for each other.â
âDo you think sheâll be happy with this life?â
âItâs the life she chose,â Demetrius insisted. âI think sheâll be happy with us and with Aric. Like she was before.â He pressed his lips to my forehead gently.
âWe need to talk about Alexander,â he breathed. I gazed up at him slowly.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
âI think I know,â a sharp voice snapped from behind me. I turned slowly to face Elizabeth. She leaned against the kitchen doorframe; her clothes soaked in my daughterâs blood.
Her ringlets of red hair were tied back in an intricate braid. Her gaze rose from mine to meet her sonâs.
âMother,â he rasped. âYouâre hardly welcome here.â Elizabeth ignored him as she slipped into the room.
âTell me, son, did you save that humanâs life?â she asked bluntly.
âI did. And I would again,â Demetrius answered just as bluntly. Elizabeth pursed her lips.
âYou realize the consequences of your actions?â she pushed.
âI knew, and I know them now. She was always worth it.â
âHardly,â Elizabeth scoffed. Demetrius moved around me slowly, pushing me back so he could face his mother. She eyed him warily. âYouâve pushed us into a corner,â she snapped at him.
âYou donât have to, Mother. You can stay out of this,â he answered. She shook her head.
âNo, I cannot. Not when my son is involved. Not when my brother gets involved.â
She was pursing her lips. âDemetrius, your daughters are involved in this as well. Eleanor isnât the only one at risk. Phoenix can also get hurt,â she cautioned.
âIâm very aware of the situation I have placed my family in, which is why I am taking responsibility, myself, for my actions. No one else.â Demetrius cast me a hard gaze.
âWhat do you want to get out of this, Demetrius? What does it look like in the end for you?â Elizabeth narrowed her eyes.
âPeace. All of my children safe,â Demetrius answered immediately.
âYou know thatâs not going to happen. You know your uncle.â
âWhat are you suggesting, Elizabeth?â I snapped. She pursed her lips and stepped closer toward us.
âI think you know. It might be time.â Her gaze met Demetriusâs. He frowned down at her.
âI donât think so,â he answered.
âTime for what?â I snapped.
âTime for Demetrius to take the throne,â Elizabeth answered in a low voice, turning to me, her eyes bright crimson. I blinked at her.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âI decided to give up my personal claim to the throne to marry Damon. I didnât give it up for my descendants.â
âIâm aware of that,â I snapped at her. âWhat I wasnât aware of was that this may have been a planned event?â I gazed up at Demetrius. His lips were pressed into a tight line.
âIt was always a possibility. Even since we were born, before William and his sister, who recently passed. Our family is currently stronger than the royal family,â he breathed.
âIf we wanted to run them out, it would be the right time.â
âI agree,â Elizabeth nodded slowly.
âDeclare war? On your own brother?â I turned to her, and she nodded again.
âWhat choice do I have if he attacks my son and my grandchildren? I will protect my family, Rose. Just as I always have.â I glared at her.
âYou have been consistently trying to murder Eleanor,â I snapped.
âSheâs not family,â Elizabeth answered nonchalantly. âShe was a threat. As a turned vampire, sheâs a pebble in my shoes. But the consequences of your love for her are much greater.â
She cocked her head to one side. âSo yes, I am prepared to declare war on my brotherâs family in order to keep mine safe.â
I stared at her aghast. âThe last royal family war ended in the extermination of the Troy family completely! Whatâs the plan here? Destroy the Night Family?â I hissed.
Elizabeth shook her head. âOnly those who oppose us,â she replied.
Demetrius was pursing his lips.
âAre you considering this?â I asked him.
He gazed down at me. âIt was always a possibility,â he repeated. âThe Night family werenât the original royal family. They took it through battle.
âThey destroyed the Troy family. The Mcnoxnoctis family can take it the same way. With Angusâs and my claim to the throne, other pureblood families will back us. Iâm sure.â
âYouâre mad,â I breathed, glaring at my husband.
âItâs always been a possibility,â Elizabeth repeated, her blue eyes wide. âWeâll have to discuss with Angus, of course. Being the firstborn.â
She pursed her lips. âThis little human of yours, Rose, sheâs hardly the subject anymore. Actions have consequences.
âYours did when you took her in. Luciusâs did when he sentenced her to be turned, and Demetriusâs did when he decided to save her.
âIâll not mention the folly that has apparently overtaken my grandsonâs mind. Actions have unfolded, now come the consequences of threatening my family.â Her eyes glowed bright crimson.
âYouâre mad. Youâre both barking mad,â I snapped.
âRose, it makes sense,â Demetrius breathed, his hand pressing down on my shoulder gently. âWe can make sure all our children are well. Phoenix is in a precarious situation.â
âIâm well aware of the situation my daughter is in,â I hissed at him.
âIâm fully aware of the wildcard that is the prince Alexander, but I cannot fathom how you insist that to keep our family safe, we have to declare war on the royal family? Itâs nonsensical, Demetrius.â
âIt makes more sense than any of his other actions these past decades,â Elizabeth simpered. I glared at her.
âIâll talk to Angus,â Demetrius murmured. âMother, could you talk to Aleesha and Eloise? They wonât have anything to do with us at his moment, I assume. But they are family.
âRose, my dear, I need you to talk to your sister. The Blake family has been scorned unjustly since your motherâs passing. Itâs time to right that.â
âShe wasnât mad,â I agreed softly. âShe was a revolutionary.â
âAnd so are you, Rose.â Elizabeth gave me the smallest smile. âEleanor was your form of revolution. I know that. Come with me.â
She looped her arm through mine and pulled me to the side while Demetrius slipped out of the small kitchen to search for his brother.
âHe told me about Romulus,â I told her.
She arched her brows and nodded. âI knew he would.â
She cocked her head to one side. âI understand what you felt, what you feel about that human Rose. I felt the same. Imagine my pain when he betrayed me, came to kill me.
âI didnât want you or my family to go through that. Humans are our prey, nothing more. There is a balance that we must uphold, and we stay hidden, we take our share, we let them thrive.
âWe watch them, and we control their population. They can kill us, Rose. They have the power of daylight. We have no business being ~family~ with them.â
âEleanor is different,â I replied, exasperated.
âI know you think she is. But sheâs human, like the rest of them. Destructive, violent, disgusting creatures.â
âAll the same, Elizabeth, you forced my hand. You made your decision with him, but you didnât give me the opportunity to make mine.
âA twenty-first-century orphan was never going to turn out the same as a fourth-century Roman emperor. You should have known.â
âI know humans, Rose. Iâve known two thousand years of humans. Theyâre all the same,â she replied, her blue eyes meeting mine calmly. We stared at each other.
âYou should have known I would have fought for you like you fight for your sons,â I breathed.
âI was testing your bond with her. It was stronger than I expected.â
âThatâs sick, Elizabeth.â
âAdopting humans is sick, Rose,â she countered.
âIs she safe from you now? Now that sheâs a vampire?â
âIf she survives the turn, you mean?â she snickered. âSheâs not especially strong. But if she survives, yes, sheâll be safe from me. Aric, though, will have some explaining to do.â
She frowned deeply. âHe has so much potential. Potential to be king. A turned vampire could never be queen.â
âIf that opportunity is given to them, they will make their decision together,â I answered. She pursed her lips.
âAric will be given the opportunity, Rose. Most of the pureblood families already trust him more than they do Alexander. William hasnât shown his face in society for fifty years.
âThe Night family is weak right now, Rose.â
âLucius is your brother,â I murmured. âYou refused the throne.â
âLucius would understand. Iâd be surprised if he wasnât thinking the same thing. Thatâs half the reason he wanted to match Phoenix with Alexander, to bring peace.
âShame the young couple isnât at peace,â she breathed.
At that moment, Phoenix and Alexander stormed down the stairs and flew by the door, oblivious to our conversation.
âI donât want to put my children at risk, Elizabeth.â
âTheyâre all adults now, Rose. Itâll be their decision.â
âElizabeth, I think youâre just as destructive as your father was destroying the Troys,â I murmured. She shrugged.
âPower is always taken through blood, Rose,â she smiled at me. âCome, letâs have a drink and talk to your sister.â She guided me out of the kitchen and out into the yard.
The party was raging. Grace and James were dancing around a small human, caged in their arms, as they drank from her.
Drunk vampires flew from the river to the castle to the barn. A group of humans huddled in one corner.
Elizabeth led me to Damon, lounging on a settee, a human curled up in a ball on the ground next to him.
âRose, pleasure. I saw the human escape. Without her life, though,â Damon said with a chuckle, his deep moss-green eyes sparkled.
âDamon.â I cocked my head. âI hope youâre enjoying the festivities.â
âAlways.â He gave me a bloody grin.
âLizzie, my dear, I have kept your new blood bag from the others. It was difficult. He smells so delectable.â He winked at his wife, holding up the arm of the human curled at his feet.
âThank you, my love.â She grabbed the human and hauled him to his feet. He was a young man, tall, with light brown skin and a mop of dark hair. His blood trickling down his chest was mouthwatering.
âIâve had a weakness for this particular specimen since New York.â Elizabeth grinned at me, pushing the manâs head back and sinking her fangs into his neck.
The human stared at me, his face scrunched up in pain, his eyes boring into mine. Such a peculiar and unusual shade, forest green, flecked with blue and lined with black.
I would recognize them anywhereâEleanorâs eyes.
