Chapter 8-2
Not A Small-Town Girl
Chapter 8-2
"Remember, Danielle," he said, his eyes intense and determined, "youâre my sister and the Darling princess. Whatever troubles you, come to me. Iâll handle them."
A rare smile touched her eyes. "Understood. Iâll go to my room."
Joseph watched Danielle leave before heading to the study with the results. He placed the report before his parents, though they shared his certainty-theyâd never doubted she was their daughter. Still, having official confirmation made everything properly complete.
"Our thoughtful girl, Vivian sniffled. "Taking care of this herself... Weâll make up for everything sheâs missed."
"Wait till those boys see what theyâve been missing." she added, thinking of her other sons.
The next morning at St. Katherineâs Hospital, David entered Room 809. His penetrating eyes and sharp features, complemented by his perfectly tailored suit, cut an imposing figure at the bedside. Logan stirred at his grandsonâs approach.
"Finally!" Logan exclaimed. "You have no idea how close I came to deathâs door! If Iâd died, who would worry about your marriage? Youâd end up a lifelong bachelor, and Iâd never see my great-grandchildren." The moment he was on the mend, he was eager to marry off his grandson. "That angel who saved me- such a beauty! Did you see her? Have you paid her yet? Though sheâs probably too good for you anyway.
"I heard you didnât feel for the Darling heiress. Since their real daughterâs still missing, maybe settle for their adopted one? She clearly fancies you."
Davidâs expression held a mix of helplessness and exasperation at his grandfatherâs relentless matchmaking, which sounded like a mantra in his ear. "Doctorâs orders-less talking, or your heart condition might flare up again."
Logan bristled at his words, puffing up like an offended cat. "What kind of grandson tries to muzzle a sick old man? Always too busy to spend time with me!" he huffed, turning away with exaggerated hurt. His theatrical sulking was clearly designed to guilt-trip David.
"Thatâs what happens when you start talking the moment you open your eyes, David replied. Only his grandfather could get away with such pestering- anyone else wouldnât even get the chance to speak.
"Iâm ending the engagement," he declared firmly..
This was arranged since childhood! How can you just break it off? Youâre making me break my word!" Logan turned his head away dramatically, showing David his back-a clear signal he was upset and needed coaxing.
"You made the arrangement if you wonât fix it, Iâll have to, David replied flatly, refusing to humor his grandfatherâs theatrics.
"Breaking a childhood promise! Unless..." Loganâs eyes sparkled with gossip-hungry interest. "Youâve found someone? When do I meet her?"
