Looking at his sonâs expression, Jason knew the answer. âSo when do you plan on telling her? Once the trial begins, your appearance will require a reasonable explanation to the judge. This matter will eventually come to light.â
Mason remained silent, understanding his fatherâs words without a need to respond.
âWhen do you plan on telling her? You canât possibly wait until the day of the trial,â Jason asked.
âIâll tell her at the right time,â Mason replied.
âThen do it sooner rather than later. From my experience, the longer you keep something hidden, the bigger the reaction when the other person finds out. Itâs better to be upfront from the beginning than to have them find out from someone else,â Jason advised.
Masonâs eyes flickered slightly, âExperience? Does that mean youâve kept something from Mom before?â
Jason was frank, âYes, when I was with your mother, I deliberately kept some things from her. I thought I could keep it hidden forever, that she would never find out. But when she learned the truth from someone else, I realized that all my assumptions were just my own self-
righteousness. If I had told her myself, maybe it would have hurt her less.â
Thinking back to what happened back then, Jason still felt scared, but he also felt fortunate that Graceâs love for him was deep enough when she found out the truth.
âI understand,â Mason said. He wouldnât hurt Veronica, so even if he didnât want to tell her about this, he would still do it!
For the next few days, Veronica recuperated at the Reed familyâs home, and Mason was almost always by her side.
Even at night, when Veronica went to sleep, Mason stayed with her until she fell asleep before leaving.
Even Jasper couldnât help but envy Veronica and said, âVeronica, Mason is so good to you. If Mason ever treats me like this, I would be so happy!â
Veronica felt a bit embarrassed, as Jasper was Masonâs biological sister. âUmâ¦should I talk to Mason and ask him to treat you better?â she suggested.
Jasper quickly waved his hand. âNo, if that happens, Masonâs kindness to me would only be because of your relationship with him, not because of me,â he explained. âBut honestly, Mason has been treating me well lately. Itâs much better than when we were kids, so Iâm actually quite satisfied.ââ
As they talked, Jasper noticed the necklace hanging around Veronicaâs neck. âHey, isnât that the necklace you used to attack the kidnapper back then?â he asked.
Veronica nodded. âYeah, Mason took it back and cleaned it before giving it back to me. It really came in handy back then,â she said, gently touching the necklace.
Seeing Veronicaâs expression, Jasper suddenly leaned in and whispered, âVeronica, do you have a little crush on my brother Mason?â
Jasper leaned in and whispered, âVeronica, do you have any feelings for my friend Mason?â as he looked at Veronicaâs expression.
âHmm?â Veronica paused, confused.
Jasper said hurriedly, âWhen I say âlikeâ, I donât mean the kind of liking you have for siblings. I mean the kind of liking you have for a boyfriend. You donât have a boyfriend now, do you? Soâ¦would you consider me, Mason?â
Although Jasper hasnât developed her own emotions yet, it doesnât mean she canât perceive the emotions of others.
Moreover, there are quite a few classmates in her own class who are in relationships, so she can understand Masonâs feelings to some extent. Besides, if it werenât for Veronicaâs guidance, she couldnât even imagine who Mason would date in the future.
