Broken ➳Jacob Black [Book 2]

As Edward drove Bella and Kate home, Kate sat seething leaning against the passenger seat window. They sat in silence for most of the journey, each of them taking in the night's events. Bella spoke first.

"Say something," she begged Edward.

"What do you want me to say?" he asked.

"That I'm a total klutz but it's okay, that things will go back to normal."

"Normal people get paper cuts. If you had a normal party I would've gotten you a Band-Aid. If I was a normal boyfriend, I wouldn't have to fight the urge to kill you..."

Bella interrupted him, "Stop. I don't want normal. I want you."

Kate scoffed in the corner causing Bella to glare at her. She threw one hand up.

"And how long until wanting him gets you killed?" she asked her sister.

No one in the car had an answer and they rode insilence until they reached their house.

As soon as the car stopped, Kate threw open the door and slammed it shut before running into the house. Charlie didn't stop her as she bounded up the stairs. She burst into her room and ripped off the dress that Alice gave her and threw it to the floor. Kate flopped backward onto her bed and just lay there looking at the ceiling above her. She groaned and rolled over to punch the pillow next to her. Under the force of the punch, the bed creaked and dropped about an inch. Kate relaxed into the now broken bed and without putting clothes on, fell asleep on top of the covers.

The Cullens didn't appear the next day at school, which was fine with Kate what with the resentment she was feeling toward Edward at the moment. What did bother her was the way Bella seemed to zone out the entire day. It was as if everything was happening without sound around her. Kate tried to get her to interact with society throughout the day but by the time lunch had come around she had given up.

When they got home Edward was waiting by the edge of the house like a creepy stalker waiting to talk to Bella.

"Bella, come inside," she told her.

Bella waved her off, "I'm going to take a walk with Edward. I'll be back in an hour or two."

She didn't wait to here Kate's response but walked over to Edward anyway and the two disappeared off into the forest. Kate rolled her eyes and walked into the house. She dropped off her school things before going upstairs. As she walked she dialed Jacob's number.

"Hello," came his voice from the other end.

Kate smiled into the receiver, "Hey Jacob, listen don't hate me..."

"I could never. What's up?"

"I'm not coming over today. It hasn't been a good twenty-four hours."

She could hear Jacob's laughter on the other end, "That bad with the Cullen's huh?"

"You have no idea," she sighed, "To be honest, it was a shit show but whatever. I just need some sleep."

"Yea no problem. I'll just see you tomorrow, right?"

"Of course, Black."

He chuckled, "Night, Kate."

"Night," she laughed as she hung up the phone.

When she got to her room Kate crawled into her bed and fell into a dreamless sleep. It was a while before she woke up. The sunset was just visible through the trees that were outside of her window. She stretched with a small smile on her face feeling better than she had been all day. Getting out of bed she went to Bella's room to ask her if she was hungry but found the room empty.

Kate frowned and went downstairs to check for her sister. Nothing. Looking outside, she noticed that Bella's truck was still in the driveway. Kate was beginning to panic now. She whipped out her cell phone and called Bella's number but she didn't pick up. Kate called Bella over and over but there was still no answer. Cursing, she tried Edward's number.

As soon as she dialed his number, a mechanical voice came out of the other end saying, "We're sorry; the number you have tried to reach has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Please check the number and try your call again."

Kate pulled the phone away from her ear in confusion. She dialed his number again but still no one answered. She was truly panicking now. She called Carlisle, Alice, Rosalie, and Emmett to see if they answered but each time she called she received the same female voice on the other end of the receiver.

There was nothing else for it, her sister was missing so she called Charlie.

"Kate, what is it? I'm really busy at the..." Charlie began rambling.

"Bella's missing!" Kate practically shouted into the phone.

There was silence on the other end.

"What?"

Kate's breathing rate increased with every word, "When we got home from school Bella and Edward went for a walk in the woods. She said she'd be back in about an hour so I lay down to take a nap but when I woke up she still wasn't here. I tried calling her but she wont answer so I called Edward but his phone was disconnected. I called all of the Cullen's phones but they're disconnected too. Dad she's been missing for hours!"

She heard the scraping of a chair against the floor and the shuffling of papers on the other end, "Kate, stay in the house. I'll be right there and we'll find Bella. I'm grabbing some guys from the station for a search party. I'll be home in fifteen minutes."

The line went dead. Kate leaned against the kitchen counter to try to calm herself. Her sister was missing in a world where missing, most likely meant dead. She didn't know what to do so she stood there until she heard Charlie's cruiser pull into the drive.

Kate ran outside to see her father looking around frantically.

"I've got more guys coming and we'll canvas the area. Which way did Bella go?" Charlie asked her.

Kate pointed to the woods to the right of the house and Charlie squinted at them as if he could find Bella that way. Two more cruisers had pulled up to the house and several more policemen got out. Charlie gave Kate a small squeeze on the arm before going over to talk to them.

She stared at the woods for a moment before a sickening feeling caught there. If a vampire took Bella, she knew only one type of person who could find them. Kate pulled out her phone and made what seemed like her billionth call.

"Hello," Billy's voice came.

A sigh of relief escaped her lips, "Billy, Bella's missing. We got home from school Bella and Edward went for a walk in the woods. She said she'd be back in about an hour but she isn't. No one is answering their phones."

"The Cullen's left. Their leader came and told us that they were leaving today."

Shock flooded Kate's system, "What? What do you mean they left?"

"I mean they're gone. They said they weren't coming back," Billy told her calmly.

"I'll deal with that later," she said shaking her head, "Billy, Bella's been out god knows where for hours and it's dark out now. It's only going to get colder than it is and it's already freezing."

She heard Billy call Jacob's name loudly before addressing her again, "Jake and I'll be right there. Call Sam, tell him what's happened."

Billy hung up on her and Kate immediately dialed Sam's number. He didn't pick up after the first call so she called him again. This time the call was answered.

"Hello?"

"Emily?" Kate asked in confusion.

"Kate, how are you?" Emily's sweet voice rang out over the other end.

"Emily, where's Sam?"

Emily sighed, "He's out with Jared buying more shorts. You know how many those boys go through anyway..."

Kate cut her off, "Bella's missing!"

"What?"

Kate repeated the story for what seemed to like the hundredth time.

"I'll find Sam right away. He and the boys will be there soon. Are you okay?" Emily asked her.

"I'll be okay when they find my sister."
