Chapter 187
The Lord Mayor Falls in Love with Me
Caught off guard in the middle of a passionate kiss, Lawrence was punched hard in the face and took a few steps back.
âAllen!â
Joey let out a cry of surprise and immediately emerged from behind the potted tree to stop Allen who tried to hit Lawrence again.
âAllen, how could hit him?â
Martha rushed to Lawrence anxiously and glared at Allen with reproach.
Allen gently pushed Joey away because he didnât want to accidently hurt her later. He stared at Martha and Lawrence angrily, âAre you two insane?
Do you have any idea what youâre doing? Lawrence, Martha is young and stupid. She doesnât understand the gravity of the mistake youâre making.
But how could you do such an outrageous thing? Donât you remember what youâve promised me?â
âWhat promise?â
Martha asked him anxiously, because there was clearly something that she didn't know.
Allen threw her a sharp glance, âItâs none of your business, and you neednât know it.â
Martha had been fooling around all these years and he had said nothing about it, because she was his younger sister. But she had crossed the line and he would never allow it.
âDonât be mad at her. Itâs all my fault.â
Lawrence stepped forward to defend her. Allen had hit him really hard and his left face was red and swollen. Her mouth was bleeding too. âIâll do what I promised you. It was just...a joke.â
He wiped the blood off his mouth and was about to leave.
Martha grabbed his hand and said with genuine anguish, âWhat did you say? The kiss was just a joke?â
Lawrence took a deep breath and said coldly, âWhat else? What do you think it was? I know youâre a crazy girl, so I was just playing along.â
He brushed her hand away and walked to the stairs without looking back.
Martha took a step back in shock. She looked at Lawrenceâs back and burst into tears. A joke? Did he say that it was only a joke?
No, it wasnât. She had felt his heartfelt love and lust in his arms. She refused to believe that it was a joke.
âLawrence, I don't believe it!â Martha said in despair. She tried to catch up with Lawrence.
âMartha, come back!â
Allen grabbed Martha so hard and angrily that she lost her balance in high heels and cried out in pain when she fell down to the ground.
âAh...â Joey screamed and tried to help her up.
âIgnore her.â
Allen stopped Joey. He said to Martha coldly, âMartha, do you remember what your last name is? Who is Lawrence? Heâs your elder brother of the same father. Why did you do such a ridiculous thing? Donât be silly. Youâll never get anywhere with him, because it's incest.â
Martha sat down on the ground and looked up at Allen with teary eyes, âIâve never expected anything to come of it. Allen, please leave me alone. Let me go my own way. I'll never regret it even if it ended tragically.â
She slowly got up and turned around to left lonely.
Allen was infuriated by her stubbornness. But before he could stop Martha to give her another lecture, Joey had held his hands gently and said softly, âAllen, she wouldnât listen to you, no matter what you say right now. Why donât you calm down and give her some time to think about it?â
Allen nodded because he had no other choice now. He had done everything he could. Both Lawrence and Martha were grow-ups, and he could do nothing to stop them.
After Martha left, there were only Joey and Allen on the rooftop.
They sat down on a long bench. Allen was too embarrassed to talk.
Joey knew what was on his mind. She smiled understandingly, âAllen, are you trying to tell me not to speak of what happened tonight to anyone else?â
Allen nodded and sighed heavily, âBaby, youâre always so smart. You read my mind.â
âIs that a compliment?â
Joey tried to cheer him up with a little joke. Soon she said seriously, âAllen, donât worry. Iâll keep it a secret, even with Sarah.â
