Chapter 231
The Lord Mayor Falls in Love with Me
âMr. Charles, Mrs. Charles is here. We couldnât stop her. Sheâs heading toward your office.â The phone rang with the anxious voice of another secretary outside.
Allen Charles frowned. Greatly displeased, he said coldly, âI see. Go on with your work.â
He hung up the phone and looked at Ms. Carol, âWeâre going to the airport right now.â
âAllen!â Yolanda opened the office door and walked in with a big smile on her face.
Yolanda was wearing a dainty pink flowing dress today. She was apparently dressed up for the occasion from her hair to her makeup. She was dazzlingly beautiful, just like four years ago.
However, no matter how gorgeous she looked, Allen wasnât impressed at all. He grabbed his coat on the back of his chair and gave the self-invited Yolanda an indifferent glance. His voice was cold, âIâm on my way out to take care of some official business. Iâll talk to you later.â
He walked around her to the door.
âAllen, Iâve brought you lunch. I made it myself. Why donât you take a lunch break before you go back to work?â
Yolanda hurried to stop him and then raised the lunch box in her hand with an ingratiating smile.
It took her more than two hours to prepare his lunch this morning.
Allen frowned and said impatiently, âThis is the mayorâs office, not a public restaurant. Iâm at work right now and youâre interfering with my work.â
âAllen...â Yolanda pursed her lips and said with an aggrieved look, âI care about you. Itâs almost 12 oâclock and itâs time for lunch, Allen, you...â
âGet out of my way!â Allen interrupted before she could finish, âSince you have too much free time, why donât you go take good care of Lillian? Donât always leave her with the maid, because a child needs a motherâs love more than anything else.â
He left the office with a cold face.
âMrs. Charles...weâre leaving. Bye.â
Ms. Carol bowed to Yolanda awkwardly and quickly left the office with Allen.
Yolanda was suddenly left alone in the huge mayorâs office, completely dumbstruck.
âAllen Charles, youâre a bastard!â
Yolanda let out a hysterical scream and smashed the lunch in her hands to the ground. It was scattered all over the floor.
âWhy? Why are you doing this to me? Canât you be nice to me? Whatâs it about me that you donât like?â
She looked at the lunch lying on the floor that she had worked so hard to prepare for her husband, and couldnât help bursting into tears.
It had been four years. Joey had been gone for four years. She had been working hard on her own for four years, too. Not a day had gone by without her racking her brains to figure out how to get Allen to change his mind, even if he could look at her one more time. However, even if she had achieved something, she had failed to make him fall in love with her again.
Although she had given birth to their daughter Lillian, his indifference towards her hadnât gone away at all. Instead, he had been treating her and their daughter with nothing but growing indifference.
âWhat exactly do you want? After four years, havenât I been good enough for you? Allen Charles, why are you so cold-hearted?â
After weeping for a short while, Yolanda forced herself to hold back her tears. She had never been a weak person, and Allenâs indifference only aroused the fighting spirit in her heart.
The past four years was her best proof of that.
She swore that she would conquer this man. She knew she could.
Just as she was getting ready to leave his office with high spirits, she accidently caught sight of the photo on the desk. The framed photo of Allen and Joey hugging and laughing irritated her instantly. She was consumed with jealousy.
She rushed to the desk and grabbed the frame, trying to smash it into pieces. But she somehow stopped her hand in the air.
âJoey, youâre a nuisance. Youâve been gone for four years and Allen still couldnât forget you. What is so good about you? I just donât get it. Are you prettier than me? Are you nobler than me? Are you richer than me? No, youâre nothing better than me.â
Looking at Joey in the photo, she ground her teeth and said to herself. She took the frame apart to take out the photo inside, and replaced it with another one with her and her daughter Lillian in it.
Yolanda looked stunningly beautiful in the photo and her three-year-old daughter Lillian in a pink lacy dress looked adorable. The little girlâs delicate feature was a miniature of her motherâs, and their resemblance was striking.
