Chapter 18
Learning to Love
Divorce! Even if Aman and Priya hadnât known each other before they had gotten married, Priya never wanted a divorce. Â Ending their marriage would mean so much more than simply leaving America and going back to India. Â It would mean being single for the rest of her life. Â No eligible bachelor would want to marry a girl who had already been divorced. It would mean having no family of her own. Â It would mean leaving Aman. Â Priya could no longer focus on the bits and pieces of the conversation Aman was having with her father. Â She slowly back out of the room and left.
Aman concentrated on the conversation he was having. Â He hadnât noticed that Priya left the room. Â There was silence on the other end of the line. Â Aman couldnât believe that Priya and Payalâs father was actually deliberating on the matter. Â What kind of father would ruin one daughterâs marriage just to get another daughter married to a much older, much worse guy?
âAman, listen to me. Â Priya wonât be able to handle a divorce. Â How can you break her heart like that?â Â Priyaâs father countered. Â He was trying to guilt Aman into letting the whole thing go!
âPriya will be just fine.â Aman said sternly, âWeâre talking about Payal.â
âPayal is mature for her age. Â She is ready to get married.â Â Priyaâs father continued.
âNo! Sheâs barely an adult. Â What kind of business deal have you worked out with Rakeshâs father?â Aman asked.
âWhy does it matter?â Priyaâs father replied.
âMy father is your business partner.â Aman said.
âWhat does that matter? Â Your father is my business partner, not you.â Her father replied ruefully.
âTrue, but when he retires in two weeks and hands over all of our companiesâ assets to me, then Iâll be your business partner. Â You canât go making business deals without my approval.â Â Aman smiled slyly. Â He was the only who knew about his fatherâs retirement, and he wouldnât let any deal with Rakesh or his family take place.
âWhat? No...Iâll...have Priya divorce you.â Priyaâs father tried desperately to counter.
âSo what? We never wanted to get married in the first place.â Aman said nonchalantly. Â Truthfully, he hoped Priya wouldnât be forced to give him a divorce even if he disliked being a married man. Â Heâd survive a divorce just fine even if he had to pay an alimony. Â What he was worried about was the toll a divorce would take on Priya.
âAman, you canât do this.â Priyaâs father said hopelessly.
âI can, and I will. Â Payal isnât getting married, not yet. Â She should go to school here, but Iâll send her back to India if thatâs what you want. Â I take full responsibility of her marriage. Â As your son-in-law, itâs the least I can do.â Aman said, smiling to himself.
Priyaâs father gave in and said heâll allow Payal to stay there for a little while longer, but does want her back in India. Â Aman was skeptical but decided he would deal with anything that might come up in the future later. Â After he hung up the phone, he went searching for Priya and Payal to tell them the good news. Â He found Payal first. Â She was in the kitchen, sitting on the countertop with a worried expression on her face.
âJija-ji!â she exclaimed upon seeing him. Â She jumped off the countertop and rushed over to him. Â âHow did it go?â
âYour father agreed to let you stay here and to not get married just yet.â Aman started.
âYes!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!â Payal shouted with happiness. Â She started jumping up and down with excitement.
âHowever,â Aman said, causing her to stop jumping with joy, âI told him Iâd send you back to India soon.â
âWhy?â Payal asked.
âBecause he misses you. Â You still have a while in New York. Â And Payal, Iâve taken responsibility of your marriage. Â If your father tries to marry you off to some creep in India, you tell me and Iâll handle it.â Aman said protectively.
âThanks Jija-ji! Youâre the best!â Payal exclaimed excitedly.
âHave you seen Priya anywhere?â Aman asked, noticing that she wasnât around.
âNo...Didi went with you, didnât she?â Payal observed.
âIâll check upstairs.â Aman said, before turning towards the stairs.
Aman checked his bedroom first. Â That was where heâd last seen Priya, but she wasnât there. Â He then tried Payalâs room, but again didnât find her. Â After checking a few more rooms, he began to get worried.
âPriya.â he called through the hallway. Â He waited and listen for a reply. Â Nothing. Â He opened the door to the room at the end of the hallway. He was surprised to see gazing out of the massive window at the back if the room. Â Her back was turned towards the door, so she didnât notice that heâd entered. Â The room was immersed in darkness. Â The only light was shining in from the window. Â Aman closed the door gently and quietly walked towards her.
âPriya. Â What are you doing here?â he asked, âWhy are all the lights off?â Â Aman flipped the light switch on. Â He looked over at Priya who was hastily trying to wipe away her tears.
âWhatâs the matter?â Aman asked. Â He quickly made his way to her. Â âWhy are you crying?â
Priya didnât answer. Â She turned away and stepped closer to the window, breaking away from the slight grasp Aman had on her shoulder.
âPriya, please talk to me.â Aman again approached her. Â She didnât pull away this time, partly because she didnât want to and partly because there was nowhere else to go.
âYouâ¦â Priya started, a tear rolling down her cheek as she spoke.
âMe? Did I do something wrong?â Aman asked, concerned.
âYou...want a divorce.â Priya managed to say. Â She burst into a silent cry. Â Aman took her in his arms and allowed her to cry on his shoulder.
âNo, Priya. Â Why would you think that?â Aman tried to calm her down. Â He pulled away from her and wiped her tears away.
âOn the phone...you s-saidâ¦â Priya stammered. She fixed her gaze on the ground.
âThose were just empty threats. Â I wasnât really going to leave you. Â I donât want a divorce, honestly.â Aman said quietly. Â After heâd wiped away the last of her tears, he pulled her into another embrace.
Priya blushed. Â She was so embarrassed. Â Here she was, bawling like a baby just because Aman had said heâd divorce her. Â She hadnât known him for long, but she realized now that she couldnât bear the thought of not having him in her life.
âIâm sorry.â Aman apologized. Â He pulled away from her again, and Priya was left desiring his bodyâs warmth.
âNo, Iâm sorry for reacting this way.â Priya answered.
âItâs okay. Â Itâs nice to know you care so much.â Aman replied, âCome on, we better go downstairs otherwise who knows what Payal must think weâre doing.â
âOkay,â Priya agreed. Â She silently followed Aman back downstairs. Â She felt a slight fluttering in her heart. Â Aman was making her more nervous than usual. Â His close proximity had nearly sent her swooning. Â Priya knew she was falling for him, but she had to keep herself under control.
âDidi! Jija-ji is brilliant! Guess whoâs not getting married anytime soon? This girl!!â Payal exclaimed, animatedly pointing at herself.
âYou convinced him?â Â Priya asked, looking up at Aman.
âYeah but it was so damn difficult.â Aman replied. Â âIâm still sorry.â
âAbout what? Didi, what did he do?â Payal interjected defensively.
âNothing, Payal. Â Itâs okay.â Priya replied quickly trying to diffuse the situation.
âReally, Payal. Iâm innocent.â Aman smiled.
âYeah, yeah. Sure you are.â Payal said sarcastically.
âJokes apart, ladies, weâre going out tonight.â Aman announced.
âWe are?! Where? Where?â Payal asked excitedly.
âA party. Â One of the cityâs hottest nightclubs has been rented out for the event.â Aman explained.
âWe arenât going.â Priya said firmly, âWe donât belong at nightclubs.â
âDidi! Itâll be so much fun!â Payal countered.
âPriya, itâs not a wild party by any means. Â The nightclub is simply the venue.â Aman tried to convince her. Â âOne of my friends is celebrating his wedding anniversary. Â Â We canât just not go.â
âYeah Didi! We have to go, otherwise Jija-jiâs friend will feel bad.â Â Payal insisted.
âOkay, but Payal, you arenât staying out late. And you arenât drinking any wine or champagne.â Priya reprimanded.
âDidi, you arenât old enough to drink either! Â The drinking age is 25.â Payal countered.
âItâs actually 21 here.â Aman chimed in, âso feel free to drink if you want, Priya.â
âOf course you would take her side.â Payal muttered.
Aman smiled. Spending time with Payal and Priya was always so entertaining.
âWhat are we going to wear?â Payal asked suddenly, finally bringing up every womanâs concern before attending a major event.
âHow fancy is this party?â Priya asked, turning to Aman.
âNot as fancy as the last one.â Aman replied.
Payalâs eyes lit up.
âYouâve already been to one of these fancy New York parties?â she asked Priya.
Priya nodded shyly. Â She never went out anywhere when she lived at home. Â She would hardly even go out with her friends. Â It was safe to say she was a homebody before coming to New York.
âIâm so jealous.â Payal said, still in a daze over the thought of attending the party later tonight.
âGo shopping.â Aman suggested, diverting the topic back to Payalâs wardrobe concerns.
Priya thought back to the last time Aman had told her to go shopping for something appropriate to wear to the earlier party theyâd attended and cringed. Â Aman noticed her reaction, but didnât comment on it. Â He glanced at Payal, hoping she didnât noticed Priyaâs pained expression.
âWe just went shopping.â Priya said.
âBut we didnât buy any party clothes!â Payal exclaimed. Â âIâm going to get an amazing strapless dress. Iâm totally going to look hot!â
âNo you arenât,â said Priya adamently.
âDidi, this is America. Â We can look hot once in a while. Â Jija-ji, wouldnât Didi look hot in a little strapless dress?â Payal said.
Priya blushed. Â Aman tried to imagine Priya wearing a short, little strapless dress but found himself unable to. Â The thought of his wife in a short dress made him very happy, but the thought of her parading around in that short dress in front hundreds of other men at a nightclub just didnât sit well with him.
âShe would.â Aman agreed.
Priya blushed even deeper.
âThen itâs settled. Â Strapless dresses for us.â Payal announced.
âPayal, make sure youâre prepared for the cold.â Aman warned.
âA short dress is inappropriate and youâll freeze.â said Priya.
Payal pouted. Â She had always wanted to come to America and become westernized now that her parents werenât here to stop her. Â She had forgotten that Priya was just as bad as them.
âBut Didi!â Payal complained.
âNo arguments. Go to your room. I need to talk to Aman.â Priya said sternly. Â Once Payal had retreated up the stairs, Priya smiled. Â She found great pleasure in taking the matronly role when it came to Payal. Â She usually wasnât as harsh as she was being at this moment, but she really didnât want Payal to become so engulfed in Western culture that she forgets her Indian values.
âAman, why did you have to get her all excited? Now sheâs going to want to wear such inappropriate clothing.â Priya said, frowning slightly.
âI didnât know sheâd want to buy all that. You didnât.â Aman defended.
âPayal is different. Â Sheâs more outgoing than I am, but sheâs more irresponsible.â Priya replied.
âPayal is a teenager. Let her have a little fun.â Aman said, smiling.
Maybe Aman had a point. Â Maybe itâs best to let Payal be how she wants to be here while sheâs in America. Â Once sheâs back in India, she couldnât even dream of going to nightclubs or wearing short, strapless dresses. Â Priyaâs heart ached for her sister. Â She wanted to be independent and free to do whatever she pleases, but they both knew that would never happen. Â The least Priya could do was allow her a little freedom.
âYouâre right. I should let her have a little fun, but just a little.â Priya conceded.
âOh my god! I look hot!â Payal exclaimed as she looked at herself in the mirror. Â She was clad in a knee length, deep purple, strapless dress complete with matching stiletto heels. Â The bust was a shiny material, while the rest of the dress was silk. Â It clung to her body like a second skin. Â Priya frowned at Payalâs appearance, but didnât comment on it.
âDidi, go show Jija-ji.â Payal said to Priya.
Priyaâs cheeks flamed. Â She was wearing an embroidered sari with a sleeveless blouse that stopped quite a few inches above her belly button. Â The blouse was backless, and showed a lot more skin than Priya hoped. Â She wore it for Payal, who insisted that they both look hot that evening.
âMaybe I shouldnât.â Priya said, turning away so Payal wouldnât see her blush.
âYou should! Â After seeing you dressed like that, heâs going to fall in love with you all over again!â Payal exclaimed.
Fall in love with her again? Â Priya smiled. Â If only she and Aman were in love, then that would be able to happen.
Payal practically pushed Priya out into the hallway. Priya, seeing no other choice, went to Amanâs room. Â She gently knocked. Â After hearing Aman tell her to come in, she cautiously opened the door. Â She paused, gathering up the courage to show Aman her outfit. Â Would he approve of her wearing such provocative clothing? Â The venue calls for it, however. Â Priya decided that she should get his approval before stepping out in public dressed as she was. Â She lingered in the doorway, still not having found enough courage to face Aman.
âArenât you going to come in?â Aman said. Â He was fixing his collar in the mirror. Â Priya looked up and was thankful that where she was standing wasnât reflected in the mirror.
Aman turned around. Â His eyes traveled from the bottom of the sari, slowly up the Priyaâs face.
âWow. You look great. Â Iâm having a hard time believing that youâre wearing a sari.â Aman commented.
Priya blushed. Â She took a step further into the bedroom.
âIs this alright?â Priya asked shyly.
âYeah, itâs great. You look beautiful.â Aman complimented.
Priya smiled.
âI mean is it alright that I wear this?â Â Priya tried again.
âYeah, of course. Why? Whatâs wrong with it?â Aman asked, giving Priya only half of his attention.
âWell...itâsâ¦â Priya said shyly.  She didnât know how to tell Aman.  Instead, she decided to show him.  She turned around, exposing the backless blouse.
Aman gave her his full attention now. Â His eyes widened slightly, surprised that she was comfortable wearing such an outfit. He swallowed hard. Â Â He had to admit. Â Payal was one hell of a persuader, and Priya looked amazing.
âUmmâ¦â he faltered,  âI...are you okay wearing that?â he managed to ask.
âPayal wants me to.â Â Priya admitted.
âYeah? Â And what about you? What do you think?â Â Aman asked. Â He slowly began walking closer to Priya.
âI...donât know. Â She wants me to wear this. I donât want to disappoint her.â Priya replied.
Aman stopped right in front of her. Â He leaned in and took the drape of Priyaâs sari that hung over her shoulder. Â His close proximity made Priya nervous. Â She wondered what was on Amanâs mind, but she didnât shy away from his advance. Â Aman took a step closer. Â He then walked around Priya, the drape of her sari still in hand. Â The long cloth fell over her exposed back. Â Aman brought the sari around so that it wrapped around Priyaâs other shoulder. Â Her back and waist were now concealed for the most part.
âBetter?â Aman said quietly, practically a whisper. Â He hadnât moved away from Priya, and still stood close.
Priya nodded. Â She took the end of her sari out of Amanâs hand and clutched it tight. Â Her breathing grew uneven as she noticed Aman coming closer. Â There were merely inches between their faces. Â Amanâs nose grazed against Priyaâs cheek. Â Priya couldnât help but blush. Â She wanted to turn away, but found herself frozen with anticipation. Â Priya gasped when Amanâs hand found the small of her back. Â He gently shoved her forward so that there was hardly any space between their bodies. Their lips were only centimeters apart.
Aman wasnât sure what had gotten into him. Â Something about seeing Priya dressed in that backless blouse triggered some sort of desire in him. Â He suddenly realized the thirst that heâd been feeling ever since heâd gotten married. Â Right now, at this very moment, he intended to satisfy his perpetually bothersome thirst.
Oooohhh cliffhanger! Are they gonna kiss? Hmmmâ¦.idk :)
Anyways, sorry there wasnât much progress with the storyline here. I want to speed things along with the progression of Aman and Priyaâs relationship so that the real juicy parts of the story can be introduced. Â Btw I think I wanna get rid of Payal. She's starting to annoy me haha. Should I?
PLEASE tell me what you thought! Itâs nice to get comments and all, but everyone continually telling me to update faster doesnât really let me know what you guys really think of my story, so try to add a compliment (or even some criticism) in your comment, mmkay? Â Cool!
