Chapter 23
Learning to Love
Children? Priya immediately sat up. Â Aman followed suit. Â Priya didnât know what to say. Â She was so shocked by what Aman had just told her.
âWe canât. Weâve already had this conversation.â Priya said.
âI know we have, but that was when weâd just met each other, and we lived in separate bedrooms. Â I thought maybe since weâre actually living like husband and wife, it would make sense to think about children now.â Aman explained.
âI-Iâm not ready for children. Itâs a big responsibility to have children, and we arenât in love. Â A child needs a loving family.â Priya replied.
âWe donât have to be in love. We can just love our child.â Aman countered.
âNo.â Priya said simply.
âPriya, youâre being unreasonable.â Aman stated. Â His voice seemed calm with no hint of anger.
âIâm sorry,â Priya apologized.
âDonât be. Â I donât need you to be sorry. I need you to be my wife.â The desperation was apparent in his voice. Â Aman inched closer to Priya. Â His hand slowly traced down her arm. Â He laid her back down on his bed and hovered over her.
âI donâtâ¦â Priya began.
âJust for tonight.â Aman interrupted. Â He kissed Priyaâs cheek and began to nuzzle her neck.
Priyaâs body stiffened. Â She felt Aman kiss down her neck. Â She suddenly pushed him off and sat up again. Â Aman groaned in frustration.
âDammit Priya,â Aman said, irritated.
âIâm sorry.â Priya said quickly. Â âI really am.â
âIsnât the point of getting married to have children? Â What the hell is the purpose of a marriage with no children?â Aman replied.
âNot all couples have children. They get married becauseâ¦â Priya stopped.
âbecause they love each other and want to be together for the rest of their lives.â Aman finished what Priya wanted to say.
Priya looked down uncomfortably. Â Aman sat up and looked at Priya.
âLook, every businessman has children so that those children will grow up and take over the company. Â Itâs why my father, who absolutely loathes children, had me, and itâs why we need to have children. Â Now Priya, Iâm trying so hard to make you comfortable. Â We have to have children sooner or later. Â Iâm not thrilled about the added responsibility, but our children are the only one who can take over the business. Â You understand, right?â Â Aman explained. His gazed was so intensely fixed on Priya that she couldnât bear to meet it.
âI understand.â Priya replied in barely a whisper.
âGood.  Youâre right. Now isnât the time, but one dayâ¦âAman trailed off.
âOf course. One day.â Priya agreed, giving Aman a fake smile.
âGreat. Â Goodnight Priya.â Aman said. Â He laid back down and turned his back to her.
Priya laid down beside him. Â Her eyes were fixed to the ceiling. Â She sighed knowing she wasnât going to get much sleep tonight.
Payal sat at the kitchen table with a serious expression on her face. Â She clutched her coffee mug tightly as she focused on her thoughts. Â When Aman and Priya came downstairs and joined her in the kitchen, she didnât even notice.
âPayal?â Priya said, trying to get her attention.
Payal didnât respond. Â Instead, she kept looking off into space.
âPayal, are you okay?â Priya tried again.
âDidi! I have to tell you something. Donât be mad.â Payal said suddenly.
âWhy would I be mad?â Priya asked, a little worried.
âJust promise you wonât be.â Payal replied.
âOkay. I promise. Whatâs wrong?â Priya said. Â Aman had overheard their conversation and was just as curious to know what was on Payalâs mind.
âI think Iâve decided on NYU. Â I can start in the spring term, in late January.â Payal announced.
âWhy so soon?â Aman asked.
âSheâs behind.â Priya answered for Payal. âShe didnât start in the Fall term because she was here.â
âWell then starting in Spring is great, Payal! NYU is amazing. Youâll love it. You know, Rajiv also studies there. He did his undergrad there and heâll be working on his MBA there as well.â Aman said.
âWhy would I be mad, Payal?â Priya asked seriously.
âI want to live in the dorms...not here.â Payal admitted.
âYou canât live by yourself! New York City is dangerous!â Priya exclaimed.
âIâll have a roommate. I wonât be alone. Living in the dorms will let me make friends and meet people and Iâll have more fun. Â Itâs part of the college experience.â Payal explained.
âI lived at home and went to college. It was just fine.â Priya countered.
âBut Didi! This is America! Itâs different here.â Payal said in desperation.
âPriya, I think Payal may have a point. Â Dorms are safe, and living on campus just completes the college experience here. Â I think itâs a good idea for her to live on campus. Â NYU isnât far. You can visit often, and she can come here on the weekends if you want.â Aman argued.
Priya thought about it. Â It all made sense, but she couldnât just let Payal live alone in New York City.
âButâ¦â Priya started.
âPlease Didi!â Payal begged.
âOkay, but youâre visiting often. And Iâll visit you whenever I want to. I mean it Payal. Donât be surprised when I just show up.â Priya warned. Â She tried to keep herself from smiling. Â Payalâs enormous grin wasnât helping the situation.
âYay! Iâm not going to back India AND Iâm living on campus!â Payal shouted excitedly. Â She engulfed Priya in a huge hug.
âOkay okay thatâs enough.â Priya said, pulling Payal away from her, âSo why NYU? You spent weeks mulling over colleges. Â Now you just choose NYU like it was the easiest decision youâve ever made.â
âWell, Rajiv convinced me.â Payal admitted, blushing.
âRajiv?â Priya questioned, looking at Aman, who smiled at her.
âYeah. You know, he goes there. Â He went for four whole years like Jija-ji said, so obviously he knows what heâs talking about.â Payal explained.
Aman was ecstatic! He knew Payal and Rajiv would hit it off. Â If anyone, Rajiv would be there to look after her once she moved into the dorms on campus. Â Even though Rajiv no longer lived on campus, his apartment was close enough.
âIâm going to go call him.â Payal said quickly, as she practically ran upstairs to her room.
âSo Payal and Rajiv.â Aman said with a grin once Payal left.
âYou were right. Theyâd be great together.â Priya agreed. Â âI just canât believe sheâs leaving.â
âSheâll be right in the city, Priya and sheâll come here during weekends. Â Donât worry.â Aman said sincerely.
âAman, about last nightâ¦â Priya started.
âItâs fine, Priya. Donât worry about it.â Aman interrupted.  He left to talk  to the chef about what should be prepared for breakfast.
Priya sat down in the living room. Â The newly added pressure to have children combined with news of Payalâs upcoming departure didnât sit well with her. Â Priya felt lousy. Â Her only sister was leaving, and now Aman was upset with her. Â It was a little too much to take in. Â She could hear remnants of Payalâs blissful chatter as she animatedly talked to Rajiv on the phone. Â Â A wave of anxiety flooded over Priya. Â Aman came into the living room and sat beside her.
âBreakfast will be ready soon. Â Tonight, thereâs a party. Â Hiten is hosting it. Â Itâs a New Years party. Â Be ready at 9pm. Â Do you think Payal will want to come? Â I know Rajiv will be there. I invited him myself.â Aman casually spoke as if none of last nightâs conflict bothered him.
âSure, sheâd love to go.â Priya replied.
âAre you alright?â Aman asked her.
âOf course,â Priya said quickly.
âPriya, donât worry. Rakesh wonât be there. Â Hiten and I have arranged for extra security and weâve informed them that Rakesh should be nowhere near the premises.â Aman explained.
Priya hadnât even thought about Rakesh being there! Her thoughts were on the conversation she and Aman had last night and Payal going to NYU. Â That last thing she needed was Rakesh to worry about.
âLetâs go have breakfast,â said Priya. She stood up, in a hurry to get into the kitchen away from this conversation. Â She took a step and suddenly stopped. Â Pain ruptured in her head, and she felt dizzy. Â She gripped the sofa to try to balance herself. Â She felt a strong pair of arms around her waist, steadying her before darkness consumed her.
Priya woke up a few hours later. Â She took in her surroundings. Â She was tucked into Amanâs bed. Â The lights were off, but sunlight shining through the windows illuminated the room.
âAre you okay?â Aman was sitting on the sofa, getting some work done on his laptop. âYou fainted.â
âWhat?â Priya said, surprised. Â âI fainted? Why?â Priya started to get up.
âDonât.â Aman stopped her. Â âI called a doctor. Â She said it was because of stress and that you should be fine if you take it easy for the next couple of days. Â She presecribed some sleeping pills to make sure you get a good nightâs sleep every night.â Aman explained. Â He made his way over to the bed.
âWhat time is it?â Priya asked.
âYou were out for a while. Â Itâs around six now.â Aman answered.
âYou didnât go to work.â Priya noticed.
âSomeone had to take care of you.â Aman smiled.
Priya couldâve sworn her heart skipped a beat.
âDidi! What happened? You fainted!â Payal heard Aman and Priya talking and came running into the room, concerned for her sister.
Priya winced at the volume of Payalâs voice.
âIâm fine, really.â Priya tried to convince Payal.
âI donât believe you.â Payal pouted.
âPayal, Iâll be okay.â Priya tried again. Â âThe doctor said so.â
âMaybe we shouldnât go out tonight.â Aman interjected.
âWhere were you going?â Payal asked out of curiosity.
âAll three of us were going to go to Hitenâs New Years party tonight.â Aman replied.
âAnother party!â exclaimed Payal. Priya again winced. Â Her head was pounding. Â âSorry Didi,â Payal said a little more quietly.
âNo, we should go.â Priya said.
âDidi, you need to rest.â Payal replied.
âActually Payal, I think you should go...with Rajiv. Neha will also be there and, of course, Hiten will look out for you. Youâll have a great time.â Aman said.
Payal looked unsure.
âBut Didiâ¦â She started to say.
âIâll take care of her. Donât worry.â Aman interrupted.
Payal looked at Priya for her permission.
âYou go have fun.â Priya smiled weakly.
âThank you Didi! What am I going to wear? Should I call Rajiv? Oh my god!â Payal said excitedly. Â She quickly hugged Priya and exited the room.
âYou should go too.â Priya told Aman.
âWho will I dance with though?â Aman replied innocently.
Priya blushed. Oh how she enjoyed dancing with Aman! Â She felt bad that Aman couldnât go because of her.
âPayal will be fine. Iâll call Rajiv to come pick her up.â Aman said, leaving Priya by herself.
Priya couldnât let Aman miss his best friendâs party. Â Heâd already done so much for her. Â The least she could do was manage a little headache for him. Â She got up slowly, careful to steady herself once the dizziness set in. Â She made her way to the closet and chose a designer anarkali. Â It was a deep blue in the upper torso area with red and gold stripes down the skirt part. Â There was heavy embroidery throughout, and it was totally appropriate for a late night terrace party. Â She decided that the venue allowed for heavier eye makeup and got started with that. Â After an hour of grooming, Priya thought she looked quite presentable. Â She looked over at the clock. It was almost eight oâclock. Â Aman said theyâd leave at nine.
âPriya,â Amanâs voice sounded from the bedroom.
Priya emerged from the bathroom.
âYou lookâ¦patriotic.â Aman commented.
Priyaâs face fell. Â Patriotic? Â What was that supposed to mean?
âYou look like the American flag.â Aman said, taking in her appearance.
âYou donât like it?â Priya asked incredulously. Â She thought she looked rather okay.
âI love it. Youâre beautiful as always.â Aman said with a smile. Â âBut weâre not going anywhere.â
âAman, Iâm fine, really.â Priya replied. Â âYou canât miss your best friendâs party.â
âYou arenât feeling well. Â We canât take the risk.â Aman countered.
âAman, please.â Priya pleaded.
Aman hesitated. He didnât want to deny Priya, but he was concerned about her health. Â He looked at her again. Â She was completely ready to go. She mustâve put in a lot of time and effort into her appearance because she looked beautiful.
âOkay, weâll go but only because it would be a crime to keep you inside while looking like that.â Aman said with a smirk.
Priya blushed. Â She was happy they were going, and she was even happier that Aman kept telling her how great she looked.
âBut seriously, Priya, if you feel sick at all, weâre leaving.â Aman said.
âOf course,â Priya agreed.
âOkay Iâll get ready and weâll go.â Aman said turning towards the bathroom.
âIs Payal ready?â Priya asked, moving towards the door.
âOh...she already left. Rajiv came and picked her up a few minutes ago, so itâll just be us.â Aman explained.
âOkay, Iâll be downstairs.â Priya said. Â She sent Payal a text message as she descended the stairs, informing her that she and Aman were coming as well.
The chef had prepared dinner. Â Aman and Payal had already eaten, but Priya hadnât had anything all day. Â She sat down as one the maids served her. Â She was finishing up when Aman came sauntering down the stairs.
âAre you ready?â Aman asked, as Priya hurried to wash her hands and grab a coat.
âYeah, just about.â Priya replied.
Soon the couple were relaxing in Amanâs expansive black limo on their way to Hitenâs party. Â After nearly an hour, thanks to the New York City traffic, they pulled up in front of a ridiculously tall skyscraper. Â Large crowds of people packed into Time Square, waiting for the ball to drop and the announcement of the arrival of the new year to sound off. Â Priya looked at the skyscraper. It looked plain, and there didnât seem to be a party going on anywhere in the near vicinity. Â Aman led her into the fancy lobby of the skyscraper. Â He too her into the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. Â A security guard welcomed them as soon as the elevator door opened.
âName.â said the scruffy-looking security guard, who didnât even offer a smile.
âAman Verma.â Aman replied.
The security guard searched the list. Â His eyes widened slightly when he finally got to Amanâs name. Â He started speaking with another security guard. Â Then, he turned back to Aman.
âWelcom, sir. Â Arty here will take you over to the VIP area.â he said. Â This time, he had a wide smile plastered onto this face.
âThanks.â Aman said a little unsurely before he motioned before he held out a hand to Priya. Â She eagerly took it and they followed the other security guard. Â They were taken up a flight of stairs onto the roof.
Only the roof didnât look like a roof. It was completely decorated. Â There was a dance floor, fancy lighting, and even a hot tub. Â Two grand buffets lined two sides of the roof. Â The DJ was blaring this yearâs hottest hits as couples danced on the dance floor. Â The security guard weaved Aman and Priya through the crowd and up another short flight of stairs. There, they were met with a lounge area with a private buffet and its own wait staff. Â The walls were nothing but glass, and the view over Time Square was stunning.
âAman!â Hiten came out of nowhere and engulfed Aman in a hug.
âItâs nice to see you too.â Aman said, trying to pull away from Hiten.
âBhabhi! Thank god you came! Aman told me you two were going to miss my party.â Hiten said with a fake hurt expression.
âWeâd never miss this, Hiten. Itâs stunning.â Priya said, referring to the venue.
âHiten, do you plan to stay in this glass box all night or are you actually going to mingle with your guests?â Aman asked, noticing that there were only a few people in the room compared to the massive crowd outside.
âIâll get around to it. I just need some me space, you know.â Hiten said with a goofy smile. Â âI canât wait for this ball to drop. Â Letâs which of these lucky ladies will be fortunate enough to kiss these delectable lips.â Hiten said animatedly.
His eyes landed on Priya.
âDonât even think about it.â Aman said in mock anger. Â Hiten grinned innocently.
Eventually everyone left the VIP room and proceeded to mingle with the rest of the crows. Â Priya found Payal talking with Rajiv, and she and Aman also met with Nikhil and Neha.
âDidi! You look so beautiful!â commented Payal.
âThanks Payal.â Priya said. Â She sneakily fingered some icing off of the piece of cake Payal was devouring. Â Aman smiled at her.
She was looking radiant, and she seemed like she was having a good time. Â Aman felt relieved. Â He took a seat beside her and started chatting with Rajiv. Â His attention was on Priya though. Â He couldnât help himself from stealing glances at her. Â She was just so beautiful. Â His attention shifted to Hiten, who was trying really hard to flirt with some girls. Â Aman knew heâd just invited them because they were attractive.
Finally, midnight was approaching. Â Everyone watched the ball. Â Itâs gorgeous crystals and bright lights demanded everyoneâs attention. Â Everyone stood up and started cheering as the ball started to drop.
âTen, nine, eight,â the crowd went wild and started counting down the last ten seconds before the start of the new year.
âThree, two, ONE! Happy New Year!!â The crowd erupted in joy. Â Streamers and confetti came bursting out of cannons that were located at each corner of the rooftop.
Couples shared New Years kisses. Â Some even dived into a full on make out session right in the middle of the rooftop. Â Priya was confused. Â Everyone around her was sharing a kiss with their significant others. Â She saw Nikhil and Neha share a kiss. Even Hiten had found himself a willing girl. Â Priya turned to Payal, expecting to find her just as puzzled as she was but instead saw Rajiv plant a chaste kiss on Payalâs cheek. Â Before Priya could say anything, she felt someone pull her away, dragging her from the crowd.
This was a really long chapter! Yay New Years! Happy early New Years everyone!! Â Iâll probably update next year just so it makes sense :P Â Priyaâs gorgeous outfit on the right btw. The whole American flag comment Aman made was because I mistakenly searched for a patirotic Salwar kameez, thinking that they were celebrating the 4th of Juy instead of New Years. My bad haha! Anyways, I hope Priya is okay. Â Someone just dragged her away. Who could it be?
Tell me what you thought of the chapter! Were there enough Aman-Priya moments?!
