Chapter 30
Learning to Love
âNever!â Priya blurted out almost instantly.
âNever? What was the point of buying it, if youâre never going to wear it for me?â Aman pouted.
Priya stifled a laugh. Aman was being so childish. Â Sheâd only bought it because Neha said that every married woman was basically required to own something sexy.
âNeha told me to.â Priya admitted.
âThank God for Neha.â Aman commented. Â âDid she also suggest that you come meet me for lunch?â Aman caught on.
âYes actually.â Priya said guiltily.
Aman was a little disappointed that the idea hadnât been Priyaâs, but he was glad sheâd stopped by regardless. Â The waiter came by and took their orders. Â Their food was served almost immediately. Â Priya had ordered a chicken wrap, while Aman ordered lemon chicken. Â They both decided to pass on dessert. Â The service was a little too quick to either of their tastes. Priya wanted to spend time with Aman just as badly as Aman wanted to spend time with her. Â Their lunch date came to an end all too quickly. Â Since the restaurant was so close to Amanâs office, they walked back. Â Aman resisted the urge to hold Priyaâs hand as they walked, certain that she wouldnât appreciate such a public display of affection. Â Once they reached Amanâs office, Priya headed towards the limo. Â Aman grabbed her arm.
âCome back up to my office, so I can kiss you without an audience.â Â Aman said quietly in Priyaâs ear.
She looked up at him wide eyed, not expecting him to say something like that. Â Priya blushed, but followed silently behind Aman towards the elevators. Â Once they were inside the elevator, Aman pulled Priya close with the intention of kissing her, but Priya was reluctant. Â She was afraid the doors would open on some random floor and someone would catch them in a compromising position. Â Suddenly the doors opened four floors below where Amanâs office was. Â Priya practically sprung away from Aman. Â Hiten stood outside, grinning like a madman as soon as he laid eyes on Priya.
âSo, whatâs going on here?â Hiten teased as he stepped into the elevator.
âNothing.â Aman answered casually.
âThen why is Bhabhi blushing?â Hiten pointed out.
Aman swatted Hitenâs arm. Â They reached the top floor. Â The only two things on the top floor were Hitenâs office and Amanâs office. Â No one else was ever up there. Â They had clandestinely converted one of the four conference rooms into a game room and another into an entertainment space. Â Aman thought Hiten was on his way to one of these rooms when he turned left instead of right when he left the elevator. Â He kept following them until Aman stopped in front of his office door.
âWhere the hell do you think youâre going?â Aman turned around to ask Hiten.
âTo talk with Bhabhi in your office.â Hiten answered innocently.
âHiten, I need some alone time with my wife.â Aman tried to explain.
âYouâre thinking about gettinâ down and dirty in your office when thereâs an important meeting in less than half an hour?â Â Hiten accused with a grin. It was so out of character for Hiten to be concerned with business matters.
Priyaâs mouth dropped open in shock.
âShut up.â Aman said. Â He turned to open the door and ushered Priya inside. Â Hiten tried to enter but Aman blocked his way.
âBye Bhabhi.â Hiten said defeatedly as he walked away.
Priya giggled. Aman walked inside his office and closed and locked the door.
âAll this trouble just for a kiss.â He commented. Â âCome here.â
Priya hadnât stopped blushing since she arrived at Amanâs office, and she wasnât about to stop now. Â She slowly walked to Aman. Â When she was armâs length away, Aman reach out and pulled her towards him. Â He looked at her for a moment before placing a soft kiss on her lips. Â He pulled away, seeing if she wanted more. Â He found a warm smile that had appeared on her face. Â She looked up at him expectantly, wanting him to kiss her again. Â Aman more than happy to oblige. Â He kissed her again a lot more passionately and needily. Â His hands moved down to Priyaâs waist, pulling her as closely as possible. Â Priya's hands wrapped around his neck. Â Aman moved forward, their lips still connected. Â Priya moved back as Aman pushed forward.. They moved together until Priya collided with Amanâs desk. Â She pulled away, breaking the kiss and looked down at what she had just hit.
âPriya,â Aman said, eyeing his desk.
Priya looked at him suspiciously. Â Aman didnât say anything else. He kissed her again roughly, so roughly that she had her brace herself against his desk to keep herself from falling backwards. Â She was nearly sitting on top of his desk. Â Aman kept leaning forward, pushing Priya onto the desk. Â Her feet were midair, the bulk of her weight situated on top the desk, while Aman hovered over her.
âAman, wait.â Priya broke the kiss.
âWhatâs the matter?â Aman asked quietly.
âIâm on your desk.â Priya said breathlessly.
âYeah, so?â Aman asked, not seeing any problem with it.
âSo, I donât want you to get carried away.â Priya answered, looking down.
âPriya, if I intended to get carried away, Iâd make sure it was somewhere much more romantic than my office desk.â Aman smirked.
Priya didnât know what had gotten into Aman. Â Heâd been acting a lot more flirtatious with her than usual, and heâs always doing nice things for her. Â She felt special. Â Her heart ached for him. Â She didnât know whether she was in love with him or not, but she knew what she was feeling was pretty close.
âI should go.â Priya said, remembering the meeting that Hiten had mentioned.
âSo soon?â Aman asked, hoping sheâd stay just a little longer.
âAman.â Priya chastised playfully. "You have a meeting, remember?"
âFine, Iâll see you at home.â Aman pouted a little. Â He leaned in and kissed her goodbye.
Priya had just set foot out of Amanâs door when Hiten came bursting in.
âItâs time for that meeting!â He announced.
âGreat.â Aman said, irritated.
Hiten turned to leave. Â He went to the elevators.
âWhere are you going?â Â Aman asked.
âThe guy wants to meet with you alone.â Hiten answered. Â âI donât know why. Â We both know that Iâm more of a people person than you are.â
âAlone? Why?â Aman asked.
âThe hell should I know. Iâm going to call Aditi.â Hiten said as he stepped into the elevator.
Aman shrugged and went to one of the conference rooms. Â There, he found an old man that looked like he could croak any minute.
âGood Afternoon.â Aman greeted.
âHello sir, my boss will be here any minute.â The old man said.
âIs he the one Iâm dealing with?â Aman asked.
âYes sir.â The old man answered.
âWhy all the secrecy?â Aman asked,
âHeâs a secretive man.â the old man countered.
The door flung open.
âHello, Aman.â Rakesh stood with a smug expression on his face.
âWhat the hell?â Aman blurted.
The old man quickly scurried out the room and closed the door behind him.
âWhat do you want, Rakesh?â Aman asked angrily.
âNow, Aman, you can try to be a little more civil.â Rakesh answered calmly.
âJust tell me why the hell youâre here?â Aman said.
âThereâs a conference in Detroit. Â You have to attend.â Rakesh said.
âWhat the hell gives you the right to tell me what to do?â Aman questioned.
âThis.â Rakesh held his phone up. Â There was a picture of Aman and Tamana kissing on the terrace of the hotel, where they had had that business dinner. Â Aman remembered how Tamana had forced herself on him. Â He pushed her away, but the picture showed a whole different story.
âIt would be unfortunate if Priya saw this, wouldnât it?â Rakesh asked.
âFine, Iâll go. Just donât show that to her.â Aman said quickly.
âGood boy.â Rakesh said. Â âOh and Aman, bring Priya too. Â Iâm dying to see her again.â
Amanâs fists clenched. Â If he punched Rakesh, then he would surely show that picture to Priya.
âWhy do you want me to go to Detroit so badly?â Aman asked, curious about Rakeshâs motives.
âI just want to see Priya again andâ¦â Rakesh trailed off.
âAndâ¦â Aman prompted.
âItâs a surprise.â Rakesh said before exiting the conference room. Â Aman felt like punching the wall. Â What the hell is happening? First he cheats on Priya, next heâs so ridden with guilt that he canât think straight, and now Rakesh is trying to blackmail him.
âHe what?â Hiten said when Aman told him about Rakesh blackmailing him.
âHe has pictures, too.â Aman explained further.
âI knew it! This would come back to bite you! I told you so!â Hiten was rubbing it in.
âI know, now stop reminding me. Â What am I supposed to tell Priya?â Aman said.
âTell her itâs a romantic getaway slash business trip.â Hiten suggested.
âLike thatâs going to work.â Aman replied.
âMaybe she wonât question it.â Hiten said, hopefully.
âI have to tell her tonight. Â The conference is this weekend.â Aman said.
âWhat I donât understand is why he wants you there so badâ¦â Hiten pondered.
âHe said it was a surprise.â Aman answered.
âA surprise? Itâs going to be a crappy surprise.â Hiten replied.
âYeah I figured.â Aman said, helplessly.
âPriya!â Aman called as he entered his mansion later that night. Â He went up to Priyaâs room. Â Without thinking, he opened the door and walking without even knocking. Â He heard the shower running, and groaned. Â He desperately needed to talk to her, and here she was taking her time in the shower.
Aman sat down on the bed. Â After a few minutes, he laid down. Â He was tired, and it was his house. Â He was sure Priya wouldnât care. Â He thought maybe he should knock and tell her he has something important to discuss, but he was too comfortable to get up.
âAman,â Priyaâs voice reached Amanâs ears. He had dozed off.
Amanâs eyes fluttered open. Â He took in the scene before him. Â He was laying on the bed in Priyaâs bedroom, and she was sitting on the edge of the bed, hovering over him. Â He noticed beads of water still on her cheeks from her shower. Â Â Â His hand automatically reached out to wipe them away, lingering for a moment to caress her cheek. Â Priyaâs eyes floated between his hand and his face. Â Â She wasnât sure why Aman was in her room, on her bed.
âWe need to go to Detroit this weekend,â Aman announced, sitting up.
âWhy?â Priya asked.
âBusiness trip.â Aman said simply, carefully assessing her reaction.
Priya didnât really react. Â She simply nodded. Â She knew business was a big part of Amanâs life, and was happy that he was kind enough to take her along instead of leaving her all by herself.
âOkay then,â Aman said, happy that Priya didnât raise any questions. Â âHave the maids help you pack. Â Weâre leaving the day after tomorrow, and weâll be there for about a week.â
âAlright.â Priya said. Â She wasnât giving much of a reaction.
âPriya, are you alright?â Aman asked.
âItâs just that...what if Payal wanted to visit this weekend?â Priya asked.
âDid she say she was coming?â Aman answered.
âSheâs never been one to plan too far ahead of time. Â Sheâd probably just come over without informing anyone.â Priya said, thinking about Payalâs unpredictability.
âCall her and tell her we wonât be here. Â Iâd invite her to come with us, but sheâd miss class.â Aman said.
Aman had a point. Â Itâs not like Priya could ask Payal to come along. Â Class was too important. Â It saddened her that she no longer saw Payal often.
âYeah Iâll call her.â Priya said quietly.
âIs there anything else wrong?â Aman asked, believing that Payal wasnât the only thing on Priyaâs mind.
âNo.â she said bluntly.
âBut you would tell me if there was, right?â Aman asked, hoping that she would be able to tell him anything.
âOf course.â Priya answered.
Something about her demeanor was off. Â She was acting different than when she came to meet him at his office. Â Aman worried that sheâd become suspicious of his infidelity, but he knew he couldn't just come out and ask her. Â Â Then he thought maybe Rakesh had said something to her, but he knew better than to go near Priya. Â Maybe Aman had done something wrong this afternoon. Â Maybe heâd taken things a little too far with his outward flirting and the passionate makeup session they had on top of his desk. Â He thought it best just to leave it alone.
The trip to Detroit had come all too quickly. Â Aman and Priya waited at the airport for their flight to be called. Â Being at the airport reminded Priya of when sheâd first arrived in America as a newly wedded bride. Â When they landed in Detroit, Priya felt uneasy, not because of the plane ride but because something didnât seem right to her. Â She didnât feel the need to express her concern with Aman, fearing that heâd start to worry about her and wouldnât be able to concentrate on his work.
âAman, glad you could make it.â Rakesh stood, waiting to receive them as soon as they exited the airport.
Priyaâs body stiffened as she laid eyes on Rakesh, and a cold wave of fear consumed her.
