Chapter 38
Learning to Love
âMay I speak with Mrs. Verma, please?â A female voice asked once Priya answered the phone.
âThis is she.â Priya answered.
âMaâam your husband was in a car accident this afternoon. Â Iâm Nurse Jones. Â Could you come down to the hospital?â The nurse said.
âWhat?â Priya couldnât comprehend the words.
âYou husband, Aman Verma, was in an accident.â The nurse repeated.
âIs he alright?â Priya felt tears forming in her eyes.
âHeâs in critical condition.â The nurse answered. Â âIt would really be best if you came down.â
âOkay,â Priya said quietly before hanging up.
Priya suddenly paled as she tried to steady herself. Â Aman was hurt. He was in the hospital in critical condition. Â She tightly clutched the countertop, trying to regain her composure. Â Her hand hit a nearby vase, and it came crashing to the floor breaking into many tiny pieces.
âMaâam, are you alright?â Kamla said, urgently coming to Priyaâs side. Â She led Priya to a chair and sat her down.
âI-Iâm fine. I need to go to the hospital.â Priya stammered.
âThe hospital? Why?â Kamla asked, concerned.
âAman...he was in a car accident. I need to go.â Priya said.
âIâll call for the driver straight away.â Kamla hurried away.
Once at the hospital, Priya requested to speak with Nurse Jones, who immediately took her to Amanâs room. Â Priya entered slowly, afraid of what sheâd see. Â Amanâs body laid limp on a hospital bed. Â He was attached to several different machines, monitoring different parts of his body. Â Priya stepped closer. Â There were several scratches and bruises all over him. Â His arm was in a cast, and one of his legs was wrapped in bandages. Â Heâs looked so weak.
âPlease, be okay.â Priya heard herself whisper to no one in particular. Â She and Aman were the only ones in the room, and Aman was unconscious.
âPlease,â Priya said again as she stepped closer.  She bit her lip as she tried to control her tears from falling.  She sat down beside Amanâs mangled form.  She placed a hand on his cheek.  She heard a low grunt come from Aman and quickly retracted her hand. He moved  a little but didnât open his eyes.
âBhabhi,â Hiten stood in the doorway, looking like he was holding back tears himself.
âWill he be okay?â Priya asked him.
âThe doctors wonât say.â Hiten answered sadly. Â âThey said Iâm not family.â
Priya looked at Hiten, whose eyes were  glued to the floor.
âYou shouldâve told them that you were his brother. Â You know Aman thinks of you as one.â Priya said, letting some tears fall.
Hiten looked up at her with a goofy grin that still showed traces of sadness. Â It was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to him. Â Priya stood to go find out what the doctors had to say.
âHeâs in very critical condition. Â Heâll have to stay hospitalized for a while. Â Outpatient care, afterwards is very tricky. Â Heâll have to be monitors 24/7. Â As of now, heâs suffering from a few broken ribs and a broken arm. Â There was some internal bleeding, but we took care of that. Â His ankle is sprained pretty badly. Â Heâll have some difficulty walking, and heâs suffering from a concussion. Â Weâll have to wake him up in a few minutes, so nothing more serious happens. Â Iâm confident heâll make a full albeit slow recovery.â Â The doctor explained.
Priyaâs eyes flickered between Aman and the doctor as he gave his explanation. Â She wanted him to open his eyes and smile at her and tell her that heâs okay. Â She wanted him to comfort her, but she knew she was the one who needed to comfort him. Â She was determined to take care her husband in the best way possible. Â The doctor and Priya took a seat next to Aman once again. Â She was told that sheâd have to wake Aman up in a few minutes because of his concussion. Â Priya took a deep breath.
âAman,â she whispered. Â âAman,â she tried again, more loudly.
She put her hand on his shoulder, making sure she wouldnât cause him any pain.
âAman, wake up.â Priya said, shaking his shoulder.
âPriya,â She heard Aman whisper. Â His brows furrowed, but his eyes didnât open.
Priya placed her hand on top of Amanâs. Â His fingers curled around hers. Â He eyes finally opened. Â He looked confused for a moment, and then it all came flooding back. Â He had been in a car accident, and now he was in a hospital, and sitting beside him was Priya.
âAman, are you alright?â Priya stood up quickly, anxious that Aman was awake.
âIâm fine.â Aman said in a barely audible voice.
He could see more tears well up in Priyaâs eyes.
âAman, youâre hurt.â Priya said sadly.
âPriya, Iâll be okay.â Aman said.
Priya didnât say anything. Â More tears fell onto her cheek. Â She wasnât hysterical, just sad. Â Aman understood that his being in the hospital was causing her a lot of grief, and to be honest, he didnât feel so hot either.
âDamn, I must look like shit.â Aman tried to grin. Â âEverything hurts.â He said more seriously.
Priya suddenly looked even more concerned.
âIs there anything I can do?â Priya asked, not sure if she could do anything to make his pain stop.
âNothing would make me feel better like a kiss.â Aman said innocently.
Priya blushed. Â She quickly wiped away some tears.
âAman, seriously. Â Youâre hurt and youâre making a joke.â Priya said.
âWhoâs joking? Â A kiss would honestly make me feel better.â Aman replied.
Priya leaned down and kissed Aman. Â His lips felt stiff against hers for a moment before be shifted to get to a better angle. Â The kiss was slow and passionate. Â It lasted longer than Priya had intended. Â Aman felt his mind focusing on his wife rather than the pain that resonated throughout his body. Â He lifted his good arm and placed a hand on Priyaâs waist, bringing her closer to him. Â He felt Priya pulling away and nipped at her lips. Â She leaned in and gave him another soft kiss before backing away.
âDamn, who the hell needs a doctor when you have a wife?â Aman commented after the kiss.
Priya blushed.
âI hope you feel better.â Priya said.
âOh much better!â Aman answered with a smirk.
Over the next couple of weeks, Priya visited at the hospital everyday. Â Payal and Rajiv had also paid visits, and Hiten showed up more often than anybody. Â Nikhil and Neha had just stopped by to check up on Aman, when Priya paid her daily visit.
âPriya, darling! How are you holding up?â Neha asked as soon as she saw Priya.
âFine. Iâm fine. Aman is recovering quickly.â Priya answered, a little distracted.
âNikhil found out all the dirt on the accident.â Neha said.
âDirt?â Priya questioned.
âYeah, the car the hit Amanâs had these drunk burglars behind the wheel. Â Theyâd just robbed some big estate and were on the run. Â The guy driving was too drunk to control his car and slammed into Amanâs.â Â Neha said.
âOh my god! How do you know all this?â Priya asked, surprised.
âNikhil found out through the police reports. Â The truck drive that also hit Aman saw the whole thing happen before his truck hit Amanâs car. Â He was driving behind the drunk fools.â Neha replied.
âWell, now what happens?â Priya asked.
âWell, theyâre going to jail and Aman and the truck driver are going to get a lot of money. Â Technically speaking, Aman helped catch those thieves.â Neha reasoned.
âYeah, by getting into a car accident with them.â Priya said dismally. Â âIs the truck driver alright?â
âYeah heâs fine. His big truck hitting Amanâs little sportâs car...think about it. Â He barely got injured. Â Heâs probably going to file for claims because he needs money and wonât feel guilty about getting it from criminals.â Neha explained.
âSo Aman was the only one who got hurt?â Priya asked, a little angrily.
âAmanâs injuries were by far the worst. Yes.â Neha confirmed.
âThis isnât fair.â Priya said quietly.
âMaybe it was karma.â Neha said without thinking.
Priya gave her a sharp look.
âAman doesnât deserve this no matter what he did to me.â Priya defended. Â She walked back into Amanâs room.
âGood news, Mrs. Verma, your husband can go home.â The doctor announced as soon as Priya stepped into the room.
âReally?â Priya asked in disbelief.
âYes, he agreed to a full-time nurse to monitor his progress.â The doctor said.
âA nurse?â Priya asked, confused.
âYes, to monitor him and make sure heâs well taken care of.â the doctor replied.
Priya thanked the doctor and was left alone in the room with Aman. Â She walked over to his bed.
âWhy do you need a nurse?â Priya asked.
âThe doctor said I could only go home if someone looked after me all day and all night.â Aman said.
âBut why a nurse?â Priya asked.
âI donât understand.â Aman said.
âWhy donât you want me to take care of you?â Priya asked.
Aman smiled at her.
âPriya, I didnât want to make your life hell. Â Think about it. Taking care of me no matter what even in the middle of the night if something were to go wrong.â Aman said.
âI donât mind. Iâm your wife. Itâs my job to take care of you.â Priya countered.
âOkay, what about this?â Aman had a challenging look on his face. Â âWhoâs going to give me a sponge bath?â
Priya blushed. Â The thought of giving Aman a sponge bath, wiping down his naked body with a wet cloth, made her anxious. Â However, the thought of someone else doing it in their house made her angry.
âIâm kidding, Priya. I donât need sponge baths. Iâm not immobile.â Aman said. Â âI just donât want to be a burden on you.â
âThatâs not possible.â Priya said quickly. Â Sheâd never think that way of Aman. Â Â âYou donât need a nurse.â
âBut Priya,â Aman started.
âNo nurse.â Priya repeated sternly.
Aman smirked. Â Priya was being so feisty, and it was sexy.
âYes maâam.â he said obediently.
When they reached Amanâs mansion, Hiten helped him up to his room.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â Hiten asked, concerned.
âIâm fine. Iâm just going to take a nap or something.â Aman replied.
âOkay, and then after your napâ¦â Hiten said, slowly backing out of the room, âMaybe you can conference call India about that business deal I was supposed to confirm a week ago.â
âHiten!â Aman exclaimed. Â Before Aman could chuck a pillow at him, Hiten dashed out the door.
âWhat was that about?â Priya asked, entering the room.
âThat useless idiot didnât finalize a deal!â Aman said angriliy.
âAman, be nice.â Priya said halfheartedly.
âI am nice.â Aman pouted.
âI need to change your bandages.â Priya said, pulling out a first aid box.
âCanât it wait?â Aman asked.
âStop being a child.â Priya chastised.
Aman pouted. Â Changing his bandages took a long time and it bored him to death. Priya unwrapped the bandages around his head. Â He bruise had healed so that it was no longer as apparent. Â Aman cringed as Priya rewrapped with his head with fresh bandages. Â She moved to his ankle next, this time applying antiseptic spray.
âShit! That stings!â Aman exclaimed.
âSorry,â Priya gave him a mischievous smile.
Aman watched her intensely. Â She was so focused on taking care of him that she didnât notice his eyes on here. Â After she rewrapped his ankle, she changed the smaller bandages that covered different bruises on his arm. Â She reached his his shoulder but stopped, hesitating slightly.
âWhatâs the matter?â Aman asked.
âI...I need to take your shirt off.â Priya said.
âThen take it off.â Aman smirked.
Priya hesitantly unbuttoned Amanâs shirt and peeled it off his body. Â She changed the bandage on his shoulder. Â She motioned for him to lean forward. Â He obeyed, leaning onto her as she unwrapped the bandages around his abdomen.
âYou know, youâre going to have to do this every day: get his close to me, take my shirt off.â Aman whispered in Priyaâs ear.
âAman,â Priya started moving away.
âYou havenât finished yet.â Aman said, stopping her.
Priya finished wrapping bandages around Amanâs abdomen and stood up.
âMaybe Kamla should change your bandages.â Priya suggested.
âBut youâre my wife. Youâre supposed to take care of me.â Aman countered.
âI am taking care of you.â Priya defended.
âPriya, Iâm in pain.â Aman said sadly.
âItâs not going to work a second time.â Priya said, referring to the kiss they shared in the hospital the last time Aman complained about pain.
âFine then.â Aman pouted.
Priya stifled a laugh. He was such a child.
âYou need to take your medicine.â Priya said.
âBut itâs gross.â Aman whined.
âAman, you have to otherwise you wonât get better.â Priya reasoned.
âI donât want it.â Aman said.
âYouâre so childish.â Priya commented.
âYou said that already.â Aman said.
âIâll make a deal with you.â Priya said.
Amanâs interest peaked.
âWhat kind of deal?â he asked.
âIâll change your bandages every day, getting as close to you as I need to without hesitating if you take your medicine like a champ, meaning no complaints and no whining.â Priya suggested.
Aman smirked. Â He could have a lot of fun with this.
âOkay, deal.â Aman said.
Priya gave Aman his medicine and he took it willingly, only making a face once.
âGood boy.â teased Priya as she stood up to leave.
âPriya,â Aman said.
Priya turned around, waiting for Aman to continue.
âAre you still angry with me?â Aman asked unexpectedly.
Exams are killing me! I need to move out too WHILE studying for exams and I have no car. Â Going to school out-of-state is sooooo problematic! Ugh!! Okay, Iâll be back home in the second week of May, so I wonât update before then. Please donât ask me to because itâs not happening.
What did you guys think of this chapter??! Priya is taking SUCH good care of Aman. So sweet!! Â Do you think sheâs still mad or has she forgiven him?
