Third Person POV.
Maryâs eyes widened in shock and confusion as Marlene abruptly handed her a gun, her mind struggling to comprehend the situation.
Just moments ago, after Marlene showed up in the house to use as her temporary hiding place, Mary casually mentioned to her that Amber had invited her out for a talk, and she was preparing for her meeting with Amber before Marlene
walked.

As soon as Mary mentioned it, Marlene immediately started to plot how to use the meeting as a chance to get rid of Amber. Now, faced with a weapon in her hands, Mary couldnât help but voice her disbelief.
âMarlene, are you crazy?â Mary exclaimed. âWhy in the world would I need a gun?â
Marlene rolled her eyes, a hint of frustration evident in her demeanor. She had grown tired of her motherâs reluctance to accept the drastic measures they -needed to take. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at Mary, her
voice tinged with exasperation.
âMom, open your eyes and look around you for goodness sake,â Marlene replied, her tone laced with frustration. âWeâre on the brink of losing everything; thatâs if we havenât already lost everything. I am already a wanted criminal, with nothing to my name since that bastard Kayden left me high and dry, and as

for you, your darling husband is in jail, and all of his accounts have been frozen. We donât have a penny to our name, and itâs so bad that youâve had to send Kathryn and Robert to live with your mother since we could end up losing this house any moment from now.â
Maryâs confusion deepened as she absorbed Marleneâs words, the seriousness of their dire situation threatening to engulf her. She had always relied on her husbandâs financial stability as well as Kaydenâs availability, and without it, she felt cornere and annoyed. Fear mingled with desperation in her voice as
she responded.
âListen, Marlene, I understand our circumstances,â Mary murmured. âAnd of course I want Amber gone just as much as you do, but carrying a gun to meet her in a public space and actually shooting her in a public space? Itâs too risky.â
Rolling her eyes once again, Marlene couldnât help but express her impatience towards her motherâs hesitation. With a frustrated sigh, she leaned in closer to Mary, her voice filled with urgency.
âMom, understand this,â Marlene urged. âWe have nothing else to lose. Weâre broke, cornered, and at the mercy of that bitch since she practically controls the police with her husbandâs help. We canât afford to be passive anymore. This -is our last chance to end it all. We canât be the only ones in a bad place, and
killing Amber is the only way to equalize things.â
âItâs too risky, Marlene. Way too risky for me,â Mary argued, and Marlene scoffed.
âMom, youâre worrying about the wrong things,â Marlene insisted. âWhile youâre

concerned about risking yourself, have you thought about how Amberâs life is going to be? Sheâll be with her rich husband, living a life of luxury, while we face the consequences of our actions. Our lives will be permanently ruined with no source of joy if we donât get rid of Amber now. We canât let her have the happily ever after sheâs always wanted. You canât let Elena beat you even to death!â
Maryâs eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat as she absorbed Marleneâs words.
âYouâre right,â Mary murmured, trying to encourage herself even though it was barely working. âIâve always said that I never wanted Amber to be happy, and itâs time for me to make sure that she never gets the chance to be happy. I canât possibly let Elenaâs offspring remain alive and well. I canât lose to her again.â
Marleneâs eyes lit up with a mix of triumph and relief, her plan falling into place. She had finally convinced her mother to embrace the drastic measures needed to secure their win. With conviction lacing her words, she leaned in even closer, her voice a mere whisper.
âThatâs the spirit, Mom. Just keep in mind that this is our shot, our
opportunity, that whichever God is up there has provided us. Itâs like our last chance to do this right,â Marlene said. âWhich means you need to seize this godâgiven chance and put a bullet in Amberâs head,â she encouraged.
Maryâs hands trembled slightly as she listened to Marleneâs dangerous proposition. The weight of the gun in her hands felt foreign and unsettling,
and even though she loved the idea of ending Amberâs life, she couldnât believe
she was conside

she was considering such a drastic course of action, which was typically not her style.
âMarlene, I⦠I donât know if I can go through with this,â Mary said. âIâve never⦠Iâve never even held a gun before, let alone shot at someone.â
Marlene chuckled, a cold and calculating glint in her eyes as she took the gun from Maryâs hands. âYou donât have to worry about anything. Iâll guide you every step of the way. Itâs simple, really. All you have to do is be ready to act when the moment comes.â
With a swift motion, Marlene positioned Maryâs finger on the trigger of the gun, her grip firm. âJust like this, Mom. And when the time is right, you pull the trigger. Itâs as easy as that.â
Mary watched in a mix of horror and fascination as Marlene demonstrated by
firing the gun at a vase across the room. The sound of shattering porcelain firing the gun at a vase across the
rang through the air, making Mary flinch at the sudden noise.
Marlene turned to Mary with a triumphant smile. âSee? Itâs not so hard, after
all. You just need to be brave about it, and in a split second, youâll have Amber bleeding from her skull.â
Maryâs mind raced with conflicting emotions. She knew that Marlene was right in a twisted wayâthis might be her only chance to finally get rid of Amber once and for all. But she was still skeptical.
Marlene eyed her mother skeptically, the frustration evident in her furrowed brows and crossed arms. She couldnât believe her mother was still overthinking

âMom, just snap out of it already,â Marlene said âThis is not the time to be acting like a baby. Do you honestly think Amber is calling you out for a friendly chat? After everything youâve done to her, Iâm sure that bitch has something crazy planned, and you need to be prepared for her. Make her regret thinking youâre a fool.â
âI already have an idea why Amber wants to meet up with me, Marlene,â she replied. âItâs most likely about something I told her.â
Marlene scoffed, her frustration and bitterness seeping into her words. âDonât delude yourself, Mom. Iâm certain itâs a trap, and youâre going to fall for it like an idiot, only to get nothing out of it. Just make up your mind already, and stop acting like itâs your first time killing
it before, so just do it again. This time, just us eone. Iâm sure youâve done
a gun.â
Mary sighed, deciding that she could no longer argue with Marlene, who was extremely persistent. Sheâd then decide to change the subject to another subject that bothered her.
âAlright, Iâve heard you, but what do you plan to do once I leave the house unguarded to go meet Amber?â Mary asked. âYou canât stay here for long, you know that, right? The police will be looking for you, and they might come here -anytime soon to check.â
Marlene let out a scoff. âIâm not afraid of the police anymore, and besides, if they come here while youâre out, I wonât be here. All I care about is making sure Amber ends up dead or losing something important in the form of a life. And since youâll be meeting her today, I need to make sure youâll get the job done, which is why Iâll be coming with you.â

Mary crossed her arms, a sense of unease settling in the pit of her stomach. âYouâre coming with me? But what if I fail and then you get caught? You know you canât go into the restaurant with me, especially not with that face.â
Marlene chuckled, her eyes gleaming with wickedness as she leaned closer to Mary âWhen I come with you, Iâll be waiting outside, and while waiting, if I find
out that you
didnât get the job done, Iâll take matters into my own hands. If you fail, Iâll simply wait for Amber outside the restaurant, and Iâll make sure she never sees another sunrise. Itâs that simple.â
