Chapter 23 - Epilogue

An Encounter for a Lifetime

Life Adventure: All or Nothing brimmed with completed tasks, far outnumbering those left undone. Kanan and Nathaniel embarked on their thirst for adventure, but not before ensuring Emily's journey began with a seamless transition. She enrolled in college, opting to live in the dorms, eager to experience what life had to offer and forge meaningful friendships. Kanan had the opportunity to meet Gina. She promised to watch over Earth's harmony, a dream she left behind, reigniting a spark as Kanan and Nathaniel ventured where their feet took them, but not before visiting Maria and leaving her flowers. Nathaniel left his house empty for the time being, cursing himself for entertaining the idea of selling something his grandfather left him. As fate would have it, Nathaniel came across Johnathan unexpectedly during one of their trips. It was a heartfelt encounter that allowed them to reconnect, allowing Nathaniel to meet his niece, something he would never have imagined.

Over the years, a lot has unfolded. Family trips, once a meaningful part of Kanan's childhood, were now organized by his mother, insisting that the family gathered for a family-filled vacation at least once a year. Though Kanan thought she was doing it out of care for Nathaniel and Emily to have the experience and bring them even closer to the family. Pictures documented their lives, and with each snapshot and moment spent together, Kanan found himself even more deeply in love with Nathaniel. Inspired by his passion for photography, Kanan honed his skills and eventually opened a small studio.

The foundation for their relationship was steady, and Kanan couldn't fathom life without Nathaniel by his side. They returned from one of their trips, settling into the rhythm of their everyday life-when Kaelan told them he had an important announcement. As they pulled up to Kanan's mother's house, Nathaniel couldn't help but inquire, "Any hints as to why Kaelan wanted us all to be here? He said it was important, and if we don't show up, he'll hunt us down."

Kanan shrugged, laughing at his brother's childish behavior. "Knowing him, it could be anything," He replied. "As long as it's good news, I'll take whatever it is."

"Right on time," Ayana greeted them at the door with a warm smile. "Long time no see." She hugged them both tightly.

"Where's Kaelan?" Kanan asked, looking around the room.

"He's probably somewhere being nervous," Ayana said.

It made Kanan even more curious, seeing that whatever it was made Kaelan nervous. As they gathered for dinner, Kanan couldn't shake the feeling that something significant weighed on Kaelan's mind. It wasn't until after they were all caught up and reminisced over memories that Kaelan drew everyone's attention.

"I know everyone has been curious all night," He began, his voice carrying a hint of excitement. "I've been itching to spill the beans, but I figured we should catch up first." His gaze shifted to Ayana, a fond smile plastered on his lips. "As you all know, Ayana and I have been together since high school. She was a tough one to win over, yet here we are, years later, deeply in love. She had a great impact on my life."

"I can attest to that," Kanan interjected, earning a chuckle from the couple. While Kanan had been a source of influence for Kaelan in his younger years, there was a limit to his influence. Witnessing Kaelan's growth and evolution into the man he is today filled Kanan with admiration.

"High school me was a force to reckon with," Kaelan joked. "But, my point is, she's the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with." He reached for Ayana's hand, intertwining her fingers in his. "As the people who mean the most to us, we wanted to share the news. We're engaged."

"And I'm pregnant," Ayana added, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she held Kaelan's hand. "It was hard hiding the ring all night," Kaelan placed the ring back on her finger. Ayana's mother's eyes widened in surprise before she enveloped her in a tight hug, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. Congratulations filling the air.

Feeling a surge of emotions, Kanan was initially shocked when Kaelan announced his engagement to Ayana and Ayana revealed her pregnancy. The shock gave way to overwhelming happiness and excitement. As the realization kicked in, Kanan couldn't contain his joy at the fact he was going to be an uncle and witnessing his brother taking a significant step in his life.

Amidst the flurry of congratulations and excitement surrounding the news of the addition to the family, Kanan and Kaelan found themselves on the balcony, enveloped by the cool night air. "Congratulations," Kanan offered with a warm smile. "It felt like just yesterday you were asking me for advice, and now you're getting married and becoming a father."

"I didn't think I could get happier," Kaelan confessed.

"If there's one thing I wouldn't do, it's doubt your love for Ayana," Kanan said, turning to face him. "Marriage and having a baby are big steps in life, and I hope for nothing but the best for both of you." Kalean noticed the seriousness in Kanan's tone and listened intensely. "Kaelan, be the best father and husband that people wonder how can someone like this exist. Be there for Ayana, especially during her pregnancy and the rest of her life. Of course, I want her to do the same for you. You know what Mom always says..."

"A woman never forgets how you treated her." Kaelan finished, remembering their mother's words. "I know. It won't always be smooth sailing, but I love Ayana more than anything, and I want this to be our forever."

"And remember, you got all of us behind you. We're family, and we'll support you every step of the way." Kanan said understanding the sentiment; he wanted Nathaniel to be his forever. "Congratulations again," Kanan looked to the view ahead. "How was my pep talk? Did I nail it?"

"You had one chance, and you ruined it. Be more prepared for the wedding. I'm generous enough to give you a second chance," Kaelan joked. "Thank you," He expressed.

Just then, Nathaniel came out in search of Kanan, offering a quick apology for interrupting. Kanan reassured him that it was okay because he had said what he wanted to. Telling Kaelan to join them back inside because he was the star of tonight's show.

"How does it feel? Becoming an uncle? Your brother getting engaged?" Nathaniel asked.

"I'm excited," Kanan admitted. "Not as much as my parents. I can already see my mom buying tons of baby stuff."

"Ever think of having children?"

"It would be nice," Kanan replied, thinking about parenthood. "Right now? I'm not sure if I'm ready. What about you?"

"I'm not confident enough," Nathaniel said softly. "I want to, but..." He trailed off.

"We're in no rush," Kanan reassured him with a smile. "We still have plenty of years ahead to think about it and make the right decision when the time feels right. Whether we choose to have kids or not, what matters is that we still have each other."

"Having learned about my niece recently," Nathaniel started. "There's a lot of catching up I have to do with Johnathan. When I think about it, having met you allowed me to experience things I might go through my entire life without knowing." Nathaniel's heart felt heavy as he thought of the years since he last saw his younger brother. Countless conversations were waiting, and reconnecting with Johnathan was an essential step for him. Besides Emily, Johnathan was the only real family he had left. His niece was already three years old, and Nathaniel knew it would take some time to establish a bond with her. Kanan knew Nathaniel was happy at the discovery and Nathaniel made sure to keep in contact with Johnathan.

"I'm happy you met your brother and his family." Kanan expressed.

"Should we get married?" Nathaniel suddenly asked.

"Were you not planning on marrying me?" Kanan joked. "And here I thought there was an upgrade to the happiness ring." Kanan looked at his finger. The ring Nathaniel had gifted him years ago, wishing for their happiness, had truly fulfilled its purpose. They were genuinely happy together, and the ring became a cherished symbol.

"It was always my intention to marry you," Nathaniel replied. "I'll buy you the perfect ring, plan a special proposal, and we'll have a grand wedding. Then, on our honeymoon, I'll have you for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'll make you squirm beneath me. In the bedroom, the bathroom, the-"

Kanan interjected. "What if someone hears you?" Kanan covered his mouth. "I might have to rethink that honeymoon. Besides, we don't need anything over the top."

"It doesn't have to be on the honeymoon," Nathaniel replied mischievously, holding Kanan by the waist and pulling him closer. "Breakfast and dinner? I'm willing to give up lunch." He added after seeing Kanan's expression that he might not even get breakfast if he kept it up.

"We will cross that bridge when we get there," Kanan replied. "And we should call Emily and share the news since she couldn't make it."

"I will marry you," Nathaniel reaffirmed, his tone resolute. Kanan nodded. The years that Nathaniel missed out on, years he could have spent happily. They were able to move forward as they desired. Though they discussed big life plans like marriage and children, they wanted these first few years of their relationship to belong to them, enjoying those missed experiences and solidifying themselves. Kanan knew there would be arguments, disagreements, and lessons to learn, but that was how relationships were. All they had to do was ensure they were grounded and, above all, remain in love with each other.

"I love you," Nathaniel said with a kiss.

"I love you too,"
