CHapter 175
The Killer Queen
Chapter 175
Tristan snatched Elaraâs phone, playing the message over and over.
âWhat the heck is this guy on about? Is he speaking gibberish? Am I missing something here?â
How come he could understand every word, but couldnât make heads or tails of it?
Elara blinked, overwhelmed by the tidal wave of information coming from the recording. What did it mean that she was Jacobâs child?
Beckett sidled up to Elara. âDad, I thought Mr. Jacob Pollack was a bachelor. How could he have kids?â
Could it be that Tandy got it wrong? With so many kids at the orphanage, a mixâup wouldnât be that farâfetched.
Tristan shook his head. âAncient history. Heard his fiancée passed away young, they never made it down the aisle. But thatâs not the point!â
What mattered was how mindâblowing this whole situation was!
Sienna looked at Elara with concern. âElara, what do you think?â
Meeting the hopeful yet cautious gaze of her family, Elara slowly shook her head. âI donât know. Letâs get a DNA test with Mr. Pollack first.â
Tristan smacked his forehead. âRight, DNA first! Maybe Tandyâs just talking nonsense!â
Palmerâs audio file had also made its way to Jacobâs phone. He replayed it numerous times! Heâd snooped around Heartfelt Orphanage and Tandy Hospital in private more times than he could count! Tandyâs words were all over the place, but Jacob was not ready to let go of the details just yet.
The Schnabel family marched into Jacobâs office in full force.
Knowing Jacob could potentially be his daughterâs biological father, Tristanâs gaze was filled with complex emotions. He decided to cut to the chase.
âMr. Pollack, mind sparing us a few strands of your hair?â
Jacob looked up at the Schnabels, especially at Elara, who had remained silent.
âYouâve heard the recording too?â
âWe have. Letâs just verify whatever that person said is true.â
Jacob let out a weary sigh, plucked a few hairs, and handed them to Elara in a sealed bag.
âPolaris Star Lab has the equipment for DNA testing; theyâre faster than ours.â
Elara frowned slightly. âYou donât seem surprised at all?â
Could Jacob have known about this all along?
Jacob pulled out a locket from under his lab coat, opened it, and reluctantly passed it to Elara.
The photo inside stunned the entire Schnabel family.

The woman in the picture bore an uncanny resemblance to Elara. It was like looking at a carbon copy of her beauty.
Jacob offered a bitter smile. âStriking resemblance, isnât it? The first time I saw you, I thought you looked so much like her. Elara, go get that DNA test.â
Beckett frowned. âMr. Pollack, if you had suspicions about Elaraâs identity before, why didnât you say

anything?â
Jacobâs fists clenched, his voice thick with sorrow. âWhat was I supposed to say? I didnât even know I could possibly have a child! My fiancée Yvette is gone, and thereâs no one to tell me the truth. And even if she is my child, Is it my place to just come out with it?â
His gaze lingered on Tristan and Sienna. âYou love her dearly, and I canât even begin to tell her how Wette left us. I am a failed father; what right do I have to disrupt Elaraâs happiness?â
The Schnabels loved Elara dearly. Theyâd video call her daily and sent treats to Emerald County nonâstop. Freya and Merrick were ready to tear down the research institute at the slightest sign of Elaraâs distress.
Meanwhile, he was just a man with nothing.
Elara gazed at the woman in the photograph, her face radiating warmth as she smiled, tears shimmering in
her eyes.
âWhen did you find out⦠that I was your child?â
âLast year. Remember when the institute collected DNA from all the researchers? I used my authority to make a copy for a DNA test.â
Jacob couldnât believe he had another child just based on resemblance! It wasnât until he saw the DNA report that he felt his world go from shattered to completeâa cruel joke.
Tristan exploded, âYou dic⦠since you did a DNA test, why didnât you just show the report and save Elara the trouble?â
He was fuming at Jacobâs actions.
Tristan snatched the paternity test report that Jacob had dug out, scoffing as he did so. âOur family loves Elara dearly. When Sienna and I got married, she said she wanted a big, lively familyâfive kids, a full hand, none missing. But thatâs no excuse for knowing sheâs your child and not acknowledging her!
When we learned Noella was ours, we couldnât wait to bring her home. How could you bear to not acknowledge Elara? How could you be so heartless? Jacob, let me tell you, Elaraâs never been materialistic. Even if your wife passed early and she never got to meet her mother, she wouldnât blame you.
Do you have any idea how considerate she is? She was afraid Noella would be upset by her presence and didnât even dare to come home! You have no clue how wonderful my child is! You didnât choose Elara; you chose to be a coward! I donât even want to give my daughter to you. What a joke!â
Tristan slammed the paternity report down on the desk, his neck veins bulging with anger.
Elara stared blankly at Tristan. She thought the Schnabels were unaware of the things sheâd done. Sienna hugged Elara, stroking her face with affection. âElara, if you donât want to acknowledge him, youâll always be a Schnabel. You and Noella are my daughters, and weâll always be together as a family.â
Tristan huffed disdainfully. âAcknowledge a bigâheaded ghost? Weâre going home! What a crappy lab. If you knew Elara was your kid all along and still allowed her to be mistreated without claiming her, I swear Iâll have Phoenix Lab shut down in no time!â
Beckett coughed subtly, trying to diffuse the tension. âDad, come on, Phoenix Lab is a national asset.â
Tristan held Elaraâs hand tightly, his gaze icy as he looked at Jacob. âElara, letâs go home. Your grandmaâs been itching to get you out of this place for ages. You want to do research? Our family will back you with a bigger and better lab. My daughter doesnât need to take any crap from anyone.â
Sienna was in full agreement, âExactly, letâs head back!â

The family arrived with a mighty presence and left together Just as robustly, leaving Jacob behind with a face full of sorrow. He stared at the pocket watch Elara had left on the table, his heart filled with anguish. Had he really made a mistake?
As soon as they stepped outside Emerald County, Sienna videoâcalled Noella.
âNoella, darling, what that man said may have been true, but weâre choosing not to acknowledging it,â Sienna recounted the events from the lab. Tristanâs furious curses could be heard through the phone, clearly livid with Jacobâs actions.
âWhat does Elara want? As long as sheâs happy, thatâs all that matters.â
Seeing her daughterâs understanding and sweetness filled Siennaâs heart with pride.
Elara leaned in to see Noella on the screen, her eyes rimmed red but her face breaking into a gentle smile at the sight of her.
âNoella, thank you. I know one of the main reasons you went to Lockhart Prison was for me. Noella, I really, really, really love you!â
