CHapter 5
The Killer Queen
Chapter 5
Noella was taken aback, her brows furrowing slightly. âMarriage? Doesnât the family have other daughters?â
âMiss Elara sald sheâs not a daughter of the Schnabel family, not worthy to take your engagement spot. The lord said the marriage is yours, and no one can snatch it away!â
Wren was grinning from ear to ear after receiving a call, chatting respectfully with the other party for a bit before hanging up and turning to Noella.
âMiss, before the lord wants you to swing by to see him before you go home. You know his health isnât great, and heâs been missing you for many years.â
Noella didnât mind and nodded. âSure, but the gift Iâve prepared for Grandpa hasnât arrived yet. Wouldnât it be improper to show up emptyâhanded?â
Wren quickly waved his hands. âThe fact that youâre willing to visit is already a big deal. The lord doesnât care much for those things.â
Marcel Schnabel had lived for so long, what good things hadnât he seen?
What Wren was really worried about was Noella refusing to go.
The fact that she had thought to prepare a gift for the lord was already impressive.
Considering the Lambert familyâs poor state, living in that tiny villa, Wren didnât expect Noella to come up with anything too fancy. But with Noella saying so, showing balance and politeness, yet neither servile nor overbearing, Wrenâs impression of her improved a lot.
That demeanor, truly fitting for the Schnabel familyâs Miss!
âThe lord is recuperating in a hospital on the outskirts of Imperial City. Iâll take you there now.â
Half an hour later, the helicopter turned into a regular sedan, smoothly entering Imperial West Hospital.
Wren handed Noella a piece of paper with a room number on it.
âMiss, the lord doesnât like too many people around. Iâll go wash the car, so could you please go up on your own? Iâll wait for you here!â
Marcel had a foul temper, which had grown even more eccentric since falling ill.
Wren looked apologetically at Noella.
Taking the paper, Noella nodded faintly. âOkay.â
Just as she reached the third floor, a bunch of wild kids knocked over a nurseâs cart, sending it barreling towards Noella!
âWatch out!â The nurses cried out in alarm.
Chapter 5
âOh no.
that cart has the medicine for bed number three. If it spills, weâre done forâ¦â
Noella was about to dodge when she overheard the nursesâ conversation.
Bed number three? Wasnât that Marcelâs bed number?
The cart was out of control, speeding towards Noella.
In the midst of the chaos, with a swift move of her feet and a gentle nudge of her knee, Noella
steadied the cart.
Not a single drop of medicine was spilled!
The nurses were stunned! That was some slick move!
âMiss, are you okay?â
Noella shook her head, just about to return the cart to the nurses, when suddenly, a plump lady
threw herself at her.
The lady reached out to grab Noellaâs arm, but Noella dodged with a speed invisible to the naked eye.
The lady lunged at air, and while Noella was distracted, she grabbed onto her clothes, her voice loud enough for the whole floor to hear.
âMiss, you gotta hear us out! Imperial West Hospital killed someone. Imperial West Hospital wonât own up after killing my son. What can I possibly do? Miss, you gotta help us get justice!â
The lady started bawling, making a scene.
âImperial West Hospital must compensate for my son! You quacks took his life! You must pay!â
Every patientâs door had onlookers.
The medical staff, used to such sights, hurried over to try to pull Noella away.
The lady shoved the nurse to the ground, wailing, âOh Lord! Why is my sonâs life so hard!â
The nurse, visibly annoyed, frowned and said, âExcuse me, you signed a surgical consent before the operation. The patient died from postoperative care negligence, not because of us. What does that have to do with our hospital?â
The ladyâs voice grew even louder, buzzing in Noellaâs ears.
âNo relation? Are you now saying thereâs no relation? My son breathed his last in your hospital! You quacks took his life; you must compensate!â
The lady was a natural loudspeaker, her booming voice wearing everyone down.
After her rant, she took out a prescription, plopped herself on the floor, and continued her wails. âWhy doesnât anyone believe me? My son came to me in a dream, saying it was all your fault!â
The nurse was disgusted but couldnât just kick her out.
âStop your nonsense. Just because your son said that in your dream, you think thatâs the evidence? Superstitious rubbish! Security, take her away!â
The lady threw herself on the floor, making a scene as if she wouldnât leave without an explanation from the hospital.
A cool voice sounded above the ladyâs head.
âIs this your sonâs prescription? Thereâs a problem with this medication.
The ladyâs crying stopped abruptly! She looked up to see Noella, her expression calm as she looked at the prescription in the ladyâs hand. Noellaâs cool gaze, like water stirring ripples, met
hers.
The lady got all worked up, her voice louder. âI knew someone would see it! Finally, someoneâs taking my side! Itâs all because of Imperial West Hospitalâs Incompetent doctors that my son died!â
This lady came by every couple of weeks, and the whole floorâs medical staff were at their witâs end dealing with this kind of malicious disturbance.
The doctors were giving Noella hostile glances.
âMiss, you canât just say anything you like. What makes you think our hospitalâs prescription is off?â
âHow old are you to be talking nonsense? Can you even understand this prescription? Do you know what the patientâs symptoms were?â
Noella gave her a steady look.
âLicorice can inhibit the synthesis and release of prostaglandins, suppress the activity of 11Bâhydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, leading to elevated blood pressure in patients. This is common knowledge. The amount of licorice tablets in this prescription is excessive, causing the patientâs blood pressure to spike and resulting in death.â
Meeting her gaze, the nurse felt overwhelmed.
âYouâre just a high school student, talking to me about common knowledge? This was prescribed by a team of experts!â
This brat, thinking she knows medication just from flipping through a few books? If sheâs not. taught a lesson, she probably wonât learn respect!
An elderly voice broke through. âEnough, whatâs all the commotion?â
The doctors and nurses immediately shut up, turning respectfully towards the old man standing at the door of a ward.
Dressed in a hospital gown and holding a dragonâheaded cane, he emanated authority without a hint of anger.
Chapter 5
The nurseâs eyes darted around, calculating.
âMarcel, the patientâs family from Room 8 is kicking up a fuss again, and this chick is adamant that thereâs something fishy with our meds! The meds for Room 8 were handpicked by Professor Calvin from MediCore University: theyâre topânotch in credibility. Iâm betting weâve got a spy in our midst. I say we have security escort her out!â
The old man snorted with authority, his tone laced with command. âLetting spies sneak in? Is security slacking off or what?â
The medical staff were quick on the draw, about to grab Noellaâs arm and hustle her out.
o was out of their grasp before they
However, Noella pulled a slick move, a little legwork and could even lay a finger on her clothes.
The lady stepped up, positioning herself in front of Noella.
âTry me. I dare you! Lay a finger on this girl, and Iâll give you a show you wonât forget â Iâll drop dead right here!â
The medical team was heads over heels in trouble now. With the lady causing a scene and this looseâcannon chick stirring up trouble, the whole place was in an uproar.
âGet them outta here, pronto! Sheâs spouting nonsense here; thereâs gotta be something up with them!â
Noella was left speechless. She just pointed out a commonâsense mistake with the medication. and these folks were going nuts over it?
Noellaâs gaze was steady. âSo Calvinâs a big shot? Even he can make rookie mistakes.â
She remembered the name: just last month he was emailing her, trying to get her to join his team. She thought it was a deadâend and gave him the cold shoulder.
Calvin went bananas trying to reach her after she dropped some papers on NEJM, the kind of stuff she wrote up when she had a spare moment.
Noella managed to infuriate all the doctors around her with her comment! Professor Calvin was a big fish in the medical world, a leading authority on cardiovascular diseases, with at Harmonia Country national medal to his name, his word carrying serious weight.
Yet now, some young upstart was throwing shade his way!
âWhat are you on about? You think youâre in the same league to challenge Professor Calvin?â
Noellaâs reply was cool as a cucumber, âI could give Calvin a ring, have him own up to his blunder.â
