CHapter 59
The Killer Queen
Chapter 59
Palmerâs voice sounded a bit whiny.
Over at the Pollack Group, things were crazy busy, plus heâd been onâcall like a fullâtime chauffeur for someone recently, racking up a backlog of work.
Now Noella wouldnât even spare him the time for a meal. What, was he less charming than Thorpe or something?
âI wanna see you. Is that cool?â
The voice was so woeful it tugged at Noellaâs heartstrings. Noella couldnât help but twitch a smile and cave in.
âAlright, but Iâve got stuff to do in a bit.â
âJust text me the address, and Iâll pick you up.â
Noella grunted an acknowledgment and hung up.
Beckett looked up from a mountain of papers, casually asking, âPalmer?â
âYeah, he wants to grab dinner tonight.â
à¸à¸£à¸
Beckett didnât say much, just slid a bank card over to Noella. The black and gold card screamed lowâkey luxury, with the Rising Glory Bank logo catching the eye.
âWhy are you giving me money?â
âSchnabel family dinners always involve give and take. Even if youâre engaged to Palmer, your gotta stay in the driverâs seat, get it?â
Beckett wasnât thrilled about Noella hanging out alone with Palmer, but sheâd already agreed, and he wasnât about to cook up a reason to keep his sister tied down.
âSchnabel girls can play the game and handle a loss. No matter how tough the Pollack family is, if the Schnabels arenât keen on a wedding, tough luck for them. Hang out with Palmer without any pressure. If youâre over it, just shoot me a text and Iâll sort out the breakâoff with the Pollacks in no time!â
Noella was flabbergasted. Calling off an engagement with a text?
She was gobsmacked!
Beckett chuckled a bit sheepishly, the picture of elegance and gentleness.
âIâve been doing some highâend client research lately, occupational hazard. Letâs keep it our little secret. Take the money, and if itâs not enough, Iâll transfer more.â
âThanks, Beckett.â
Chapter 59
CEOâs Office of East Sea Culture Company
Alkaid, clad in a tailorâmade Azure suit, stood before Noella, reporting on recent work.
âBoss, Yvonne got snatched by Thorpe, and might even skip the country. Should we tip off the Schnabels?â
âNah.â
The Schnabels, with their sharp senses, would catch on to Yvonneâs situation soon enough. Dropping them a hint at the right time was all that was needed.
âWe almost had Thorpeâs location pinned, then those Abyssal Organization goons beat us to the punch! They even said you should go ask their big boss directly. That Abyssal Organization is playing dirty, I swear. Boss, you better not go!â
Noella deadpanned, âIâve got dinner plans with Abyssalâs head honcho tonight.â
Alkaid was floored! He turned and clung to Ivan behind him, the two weeping in each otherâs arms, bawling their eyes out.
âOur boss is too noble, already got a fiancé and still sacrificing her charm for the sake of the organization. Boss, what if Abyssalâs leader is a pervert, what then?â
Ivan smacked him on the head, correcting. âAre you daft? If itâs a pervert, itâs perfect bait for the boss. With those killer looks, what canât the boss do? Boss, you canât tell your clueless fiancé. I heard he just splurged on new lab equipment!â
âCould it be, boss, youâre actually keeping the Pollack CEO as a backup? Oh man, this is too thrilling! Who are we gonna end up marrying off to?â
Noella was at her witâs end sometimes dealing with these quirky geniuses.
âAdd two more sets to tonightâs experiments. No sleep until theyâre done.â
The two cried even harder. What kind of heartless boss was this!
âVincentâs been calling nonâstop. I havenât picked up, even blocked him.â
âYeah, donât bother.â
Now that the Lambert family had publicly disowned her and decided to move old Mrs. Lambertâs grave, with the Lambert ancestral home transferred, she had nothing to do with the Lambert family anymore!
Outside the office, Briony was all dolled up and jittery. She finally managed to get the East Sea Culture Company bossâs number from Vincentâs contacts, convinced that if the East Sea boss took a shine to her, she could still make her debut!
Briony was super confident in her looks, but the security guard at the door wouldnât budge.
âPlease, let me in. I really need to see Mr. Alkaid. Iâm begging you.â
12:46
The guard remained stonyâlaced at the entrance. âYou can call Mr. Alkaid directly. If he says okay, then you can come in.â
Briony was nearly at her witsâ end! Did she not want to call Mr. Alkaid? The problem was he . didnât even pick up unknown calls, straight up blocked her!
âIâm here for a job interview. I promise Iâll be a hit if I join your company.â
The guard almost laughed, giving Briony the onceâover. âLady, what we donât lack here are pretty faces and confidence. Your looks donât cut it at our company!â
He pointed to the rolling ads on the big screen by the door. âSee, you gotta at least be a stunner like Miss Noella to turn heads!â
The Schnabel family had bought out all the mall screens to celebrate Noellaâs birthday, and even the former Polaris Star Lab was plastered with birthday posters of her. Seeing their bossâs face at work, everyone felt an extra kick of motivation for the day!
When Noella walked in, she was pretty speechless. But Alkaid was like, âWho cares, as long as itâs not hanging at the entrance of the Lunar Lab, weâre all good.â If Noella hadnât put her foot down, they wouldâve plastered her poster on the latest satellite and sent their boss on a cosmic joyrideâ¦.
Briony couldnât believe she was getting shown up by Noellaâs face at East Sea Culture Company of all places!
Grinding her teeth, she muttered resentfully, âSheâs had work done! She didnât look anything like this before.â
The office door swung open, revealing a pair of shapely, long legs with delicate high heels clicking on the floor like a princess waltzing into the room.
The girl had a face that was both alluring and refined, with eyes like tranquil pools, cool and boundless yet brimming with emotion. Her presence was so ethereal it felt almost sacrilegious to disturb her.
Catching sight of that face, Briony quickly covered her mouth. She hadnât been overheard, had
she?
But what if she had? It wasnât like Briony hadnât crossed Noella before without any repercussions!
Alkaid stood respectfully behind Noella. âBe careful, Miss Noella. Iâll walk you to the entrance.â
âMhm.â
When Briony saw Alkald, she was thrilled and wanted to rush over to chat him up, hoping heâd take her under his wing and launch her career.
The security guards were caught off guard by her sudden outburst â Alkaid had a serious case of germophobia, and heâd probably want to hurl if she touched him!
âMiss, please mind your behavior!â
Briony stomped her foot in frustration, blocked by those clueless guards!
This was her only shot! She couldnât just watch Noella and Alkaid leave, so in desperation, she blurted out, âNoella! Canât you just help me out?â
Noella didnât miss a step, her heels clicking crisply on the marble floor.
Ivan turned around with a displeased look at the guards.
âStep up the security around here. Donât let any trash get near Miss Noella!â
The guards were so done with Briony! âGot it, weâre on It! Miss, please leave immediately!â
Briony was still in a daze. Wasnât that Ivan, the boss of West Ocean Media? Why were they calling Noella âMissâ? And with such deference, could it be that both East Sea and West Ocean were actually part of the Schnabel familyâs empire, and as Beckettâs kept woman, Noella had the privilege to be there?
The more Briony thought about it, the more it seemed plausible!
âWhat a shameless woman, degrading herself, selling her body. I never imagined Noella could be so dirty, totally unworthy of being the Lambert familyâs daughter!â
Watching Noella being escorted by Alkaid and Ivan into another luxury car, Briony was sour and bitter, wishing she was the one in that car.
After all, sheâd sneaked out behind Vincentâs back, and now sheâd have to grab a cab or even bike home on a shared ride.
