Chapter 105
The Man of the House
âC-congratulations?â Anna looked at the thing I was holding in her face.
âI have a driverâs permit now.â
âI can see that.â
âAre your parents around?â I asked.
âNo⦠theyâre out right now.â She frowned.
âI noticed you have a car.â
She sighed. âYouâre still using me for my carâ¦â
I pulled the car back. âIs that a no then?â
âNo⦠I mean yes⦠I mean⦠where do you want to go?â Anna asked, blushing slightly.
âI want to go apply for a job,â I responded sheepishly.
It had been a few days since I had gotten my driverâs license, but that didnât mean I was allowed to drive anywhere. Other than my trips to and from school, I hadnât been able to go anywhere. I realized that this was exactly why I didnât want to get a license in the first place. Just because I was right didnât mean I wasnât still excited about my license though. Once I got a job, Iâd be able to save up and get a car, and thatâs when Iâd obtain true freedom. Rather, Iâd be able to be more useful to my family, help my sisters out, and take some pressure off mom.
It was strange how my priorities had seemingly started to change. I had always felt out of place in my family, but now I wanted nothing more than to have a place with them. I cleared my throat and gave Anna my best smile. Until I had a job, I couldnât justify access to the car, so it was a catch-22. I had to get a job to be able to use the car, but I needed the car to find a job. Thatâs where Anna came in. I could have asked London or my girlfriends to help, but I didnât want to hear them complaining about it. London would say I didnât need a job and should focus on my academics, which were admittedly still doing poorly. Samantha had enough problems with the divorce, and when it came to Abby, it was probably better if she didnât know where I worked.
âA job?â Anna cocked her head.
âPleaseâ¦â I asked, reaching out and touching her shoulder. âI really need it.â
âI will!â She spoke slightly too fast, and then cleared her throat. âI mean, I can help you get a job. I-in fact⦠you could try working where I work.â
âYou have a job?â
She sighed. âYou donât have to say that like itâs a surprise. What do you think Iâm always up to?â
âSorry.â I smiled. âI think itâs cool youâre working.â
At the very least, neither Samantha nor Abigail had a job. If they knew I was thinking poorly of them for that, they probably would have raced out and gotten jobs the very next day.
âC-cool.â Her cheeks turned pink. âRight⦠um⦠well, letâs go.â
âWhere do you work through?â
âAh! That, itâs just a restaurant. The pay isnât good, but the tips make up for it. Youâd probably do better with tips than me.â
âR-reallyâ¦â
She nodded. âYou want to try?â
âWhy not?â I chuckled as I stepped aside so she could leave her house. âAh, can I drive?â
âDrive!â Her eyes widened, and she looked from her car to me and back. âI-I guessâ¦â
She handed the keys to me like she was giving up her spleen. That didnât mean I didnât snatch them and get into the driverâs side. This was the same car that had hit me and brought me into this world. Why couldnât I take it for a spin on my own? I turned on the car and headed off, only to realize I still didnât know exactly where I was going. Anna seemed to realize that, although she hadnât opened her mouth. She subtly started to direct me in the correct direction, and I spared her any embarrassed looks as we took the scenic route to reach the place.
It wasnât a national chain restaurant, but something a bit more local. I hoped that would mean itâd be easier to get a job. I walked in with Anna next to me. She started looking a bit shy as we walked in. A guy was standing at the reception desk. When he saw Anna, he immediately waved.
âHey, Anna. Arenât you off today?â He asked, and when he saw me a grin formed on his face. âOh, did you bring your boyfriend?â
âHeâs not⦠I mean⦠is Danny in?â
âDanny?â The man put his finger on his cheek, which I think was him trying to look cute, and failed miserably on a guy. âYeah, sheâs in the back.â
âIâm going to see if sheâs hiring.â Anna declared.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âHim!â The guy suddenly jerked up. âA-are you really sure?â
âHuh? Why?â
âItâs just⦠you know how she is with⦠the male staff.â He suddenly looked a bit uncomfortable speaking.
Anna frowned. âIs there something wrong?â
The guy looked away. âNo, not⦠not really. Itâs just⦠Danny has said some thingsâ¦â
âIsnât she just joking?â Anna asked, a generally clueless look on her face.
âYou wouldnât understand. Youâre not a boy.â He shot her a glare before turning to me. âYou might want to get a job somewhere else.â
âUm⦠I heard I could make good money here?â I wasnât sure how else to respond.
He blinked. âYeah⦠I guess the tips are good, but only if youâre comfortable with this pussy fest.â
âPussy fest?â
The guy leaned closer. âThis place is notorious for having fat, old women who treat the waiters like meat. Danny doesnât do anything about it. She even says we should stuff our underwear because the guests like them bigâ¦â
âItâs not that bad!â Anna declared in a horrified voice. âYou just donât want new guys competing for your tips.â
âYou go to an all-girls school. Youâre used to being surrounded by gross women. You donât know what itâs like for boys.â He sniffed, turning to deal with a customer that came up with the bill, who just happened to be an old woman.
Anna grabbed my hand and then pulled me away, heading to the back of the restaurant. âItâs not like that! I wouldnât bring you to a place⦠Although, Danny does say the men are really catty and always complaining about them. Ah⦠maybe I shouldnât have brought you here.â
âNo, itâs fine!â I quickly cut in, feeling half like laughing. âIâm not as⦠um⦠fragile as some guys. As long as the money is good, I donât mind.â
âOh, okay.â Anna nodded, then guided me into the kitchen.
There were several women in hairnets cooking there. One woman with several tattoos on her arms shouted when she saw us.
âHey! Anna! Whoâs the cute boy?â
âWhat are you saying? A friend. A friend! Iâm taking him to get a job.â
âHehe⦠nice.â She winked at me and then kissed me. âWeâll take good care of you here.â
Anna looked at me like she was about to cry. Her declaration that it wasnât bad was based on her extremely one-sided point of view. It took having a boy next to her before she started to get a rude awakening.
I laughed lightly. âItâs fine. I donât mind.â
Anna swallowed hard, nodded, and then continued into the back room. There, a middle-aged woman was sitting at the desk, typing on a computer.
âNot right now. Iâm working on some reports.â The woman snapped without looking up.
âOh⦠sorry, will you be available later?â Anna asked worriedly.
The woman finally looked up when she heard Annaâs voice, and then blinked. âAnna? What are you doing here? I donât have you scheduled for this shift.â
âR-right! I know.â She tried to bolster her confidence. âI just wanted to see if you were hiring new waiters.â
âWaiters?â She crossed her arms and frowned before I poked my head in and waved slightly.
Her expression immediately turned dubious. âA boyfriend?â
âHeâs not⦠heâs a friend. Danny, I wanted to see if you could give him a chance.â
âA chance?â She repeated doubtfully. âAlright, boy, do you have any waiter experience?â
âI donât!â I answered honestly.
Anna winced, but Danny leaned forward. âAny job before?â
âNone.â
She let out a sigh. âIs there any reason I should hire you?â
âUm⦠Iâm attractive?â
I had never really seen myself as particularly attractive, although my current success told me I was probably good enough looking. From that, Iâd just go for it. Anna nearly spat, although she wasnât even drinking anything.
âWhat?â Danny blinked.
âOh! And, if you need me to stuff my crotch, thatâs fine with me.â I added. âI mean, Iâll pretty much stuff anything.â
âNoah!â Anna cried out.
âAlrightâ¦â she leaned back. âYou think youâre being funny? How about this one? A woman is being arrested by a male cop. He says, âAnything you say can and will be used against you.â She bends over and says, âpenis.ââ
âDanny?â Anna spun around.
I scratch my chin. âNot bad. Alright. What do women have in common with screen doors? The more you bang them, the looser they get.â
âWhatâs the difference between a husband and a lover? About fifty pounds!â
âWhatâs the difference between a snowman and a snowwoman? Snowballs.â
Danny let out a laugh, and I joined her. Anna stared at the pair of us like we were insane.
âAlright⦠alright⦠Iâll give you a job.â
âYou will?â Anna nearly shouted.
âDonât act so surprised!â I shot back angrily.
Danny laughed again. âLook, I need a boy on weekends who wonât blush. I have a lot of lifelong customers who come in. They like to tell lewd jokes. If they like you, the tips are good. Howâs that sound?â
âThat sounds good to me.â I smiled.
âI already regret bringing him here.â Anna sighed.
âCome on⦠we should go celebrate.â I grabbed onto her, causing Anna to blush slightly.
Danny gave me a packet to fill out and the rest of the information, and then Anna and I got up to leave. Just as I reached the doorway, Danny lifted her hand.
âOh, by the way. These girls like butts. You donât need to stuff your underwear, but tight pants might not be badly received.â
âU-understood!â
âPlease stop filling his head with weird things.â Anna was nearly pushing me out the door.
With Anna being forceful, we left the restaurant quickly before I could even get a proper tour of the place. Iâd have plenty of time on the weekend to do so though. I had a job, and it sounded like the pay was pretty good.
âNoah, you donât need to force yourself.â Anna declared. âIf you donât want the job, donât take it. I guess Iâm a little blind to a guyâs needs and wants. I didnât realize itâd be that bad.â
âItâs really fine.â I shrugged. âYouâre worrying too much.â
âI just⦠I donât want you getting hurt.â Anna responded, looking slightly stubborn.
âIâm not,â I responded comfortingly, putting my hand down on her leg. âAnd Iâm really happy you helped me get my first job.â
âI-itâs nothing.â She stiffened slightly, looking nervous as I looked down at her. âWh-what do you want to do now?â
âI said I think we should celebrate,â I answered. âWhy donât we go do that?â
âCelebrate? Like⦠you want to get ice cream.â
I bit my lip and shook my head. âNo, I wasnât thinking ice cream.â
She turned to me, looking genuinely confused. âWhat do you have in mind- ahhhâ¦â
My hand slowly moved up her leg and to her inner thigh. âI was thinking itâs a good time we go park somewhere, and I show you all of my appreciation.â
âA-a-appreciationâ¦â She had started stuttering.
I nodded. âYouâve done so much for me, I was thinking itâs about time I do something for you, donât you agree?â
She looked at me, her mouth slightly slack-jawed. âGod, yes.â
