Evil Boys: Chapter 38
Evil Boys (Spine Ridge University)
Panic seeps into my bones.
I shove Kai away, handing him back his knife.
She bolts off with widened eyes, so I chase her through the rose garden. âWait!â
âNo, I saw nothing!â
âCrystal, please!â When I catch up with her, I grasp her arm and force her to turn around. âPlease, donât run away.â
Sheâs the only friend I have in common with Penelope, and I donât want to risk losing a friendship over this.
âYou have to understand itâs not what it looks like.â
âThat sure looked like you were kissing Kai fucking Torres,â Crystal replies, whispering, âDo you know what your brother would do if he found out about this? I mean, Nathanâs one thing, but Kai too?â
Kai comes running through the maze, but when she spots him, her face goes as pale as the snow falling around us.
âThereâs no need to run from me,â Kai says from a distance. âI can find anyone, anywhere, anytime I want to. Ask Lana.â
Her eyes widen, and she gulps down her nerves. âHeâs freaking me out.â
âHe wonât come near you, promise.â
âWhy are you even with him? And what about Milo and Nathan? Youâre seeing all three of them?â she asks.
A blush creeps onto my cheeks. âItâs not really seeing them, more like ⦠an arrangement.â
âAn arrangement to kiss?â She frowns. âYouâre not making any sense.â
âItâs not justâNever mind, what Iâm trying to say is that I just want you to know it doesnât mean anything important.â
âYes, it does,â Kai says with a threatening voice, and when I turn my head to throw him a snooty glance, heâs simply staring at Crystal. âShe means everything to me. And if you like her as your friend, youâd be wise to keep your mouth shut.â
âKai!â I warn.
God, Iâm terrified of anyone finding out what Iâve been up to, and now this.
âI wonât tell anyone,â Crystal says.
âGood,â Kai responds, finally tucking his knife back into his pocket. âGuess thatâs settled then.â
âIâm sorry,â I tell her and grab her hands. âPlease donât be mad.â
âIâm not mad. Iâm just worried.â She squeezes my hands. âI just want you to be safe. Even though you only see me as Penelopeâs best friend, I consider you a friend of mine.â
I pull her in for a hug. âThank you. And you are my friend. You always will be, even if that fucker over there doesnât like it.â
I narrow my eyes at him, but the killer smile he gives me throws me off.
I pull away as Kai approaches. He holds out her books. âYou dropped these.â
We both stare at him sheepishly as she snatches them back and tucks them into her bag.
âI was just trying to find a quiet spot to study, and then I find you two kissing,â she mutters.
I snort. âHa, same, except ⦠Iâm a boy magnet apparently.â
That came out a lot less funny than it sounded in my head.
âSo like ⦠what kind of arrangement do you guys have?â she asks, tilting her head to look at Kai.
âNone of your business,â he says.
âBe nice,â I warn him.
He bristles. âFine.â And he sticks out his hand. âNice to meet you.â
She grabs his hand, but when she looks under his hoodie and sees his scar and the icy white eye underneath, she visibly recoils. His mouth twitches as she swiftly retracts her hand, and he pulls the hoodie farther over his face.
âI ⦠Iâm sorry,â she stammers.
He clearly doesnât like to be stared at. But he shouldnât have threatened her either.
I grab her by the shoulder and pull her away. âLetâs just go.â
âWhere?â Kai asks briskly.
âTo study,â I respond.
âI wasnât finished yet,â he says.
I throw him a warning glare. âI am. Donât follow us.â
When I walk off with her, I half expected him to hunt me down and make me stop, but he doesnât. He just stays between the roses and lets the flakes fall onto his body, as though he intends to remain there as a watchful guardian, never swaying from his post, never tempted to go anywhere else but exactly where I left him.
Waiting.
For me.
And with every step I take through the crackling snow I can feel the ice that had frozen my heart crack with it.
Nathan
Later that day
âUp!â Rory squeals when I lift her up from the ground and onto the stump. âDown!â
I grasp her and hold her like an airplane, zooming her through the air, and she squeals again with delight.
âUp!â
I put her back on the stump, ready for another takeoff, when someone behind me clears their throat.
âReliving your childhood?â Crystal muses, making me turn my head.
âOh, hey, didnât see you there,â I reply. I turn to Ro and say, âGo play by yourself a little.â
âOkay, but only if you promise to take me for another ride after,â Ro bargains.
I roll my eyes and hold out my hand. âDeal.â
With a gleeful smile on her face she shakes my hand before running off towards the nearest slide.
âYouâve got a handful with her,â Crystal murmurs.
âYeah, sheâs gonna be a wild one when sheâs grown, thatâs for sure,â I reply.
âCute.â
I sit down on the bench and take a much needed breath. âGot a study break?â
âYeah, but not because I wanted one.â She laughs awkwardly. âI wanted to ask you something but I donât know how.â
âWhat?â
âYou and Lana ⦠youâre a thing now?â
My pupils dilate and a blush creeps onto my cheeks. âUh ⦠who told you that?â
âWell, she kinda gave it away.â She snorts. âAnd then also because Milo was basically worshipping her in front of us and spilled the beans.â
I slam my hand against my face and rub my eyes. âOh God.â
She giggles. âI just thought maybe you wanted to know she told us.â
âWho else knows?â
âHer friends. Irina and Brooke.â
I groan out loud, and it only makes her giggle more.
âThat wasnât even the most awkward part. I actually caught her kissing Kai in the rose garden.â
âOh.â
âOh? So you know theyâre a thing too?â
I shrug. âWeâre a mess. Iâm not gonna lie.â
She looks at me like Iâve lost my mind. âBut I thought you were into ⦠boys?â
âI am. I never said I wasnât. Lana just makes us crazy.â
âAhhh â¦â She rubs her lips together. âThat explains it.â
âWhat?â
âWell, Kai almost looked like he wanted to kill me for intervening,â she says, chuckling, but itâs not an amused chuckle at all. More like sheâs surprised sheâs still alive after crossing his path, and I donât blame her at all.
âSorry about that. Heâs very protective of her.â
I feel the same way, but I trust Crystal.
âYeah, I noticed.â
âAre you upset I didnât tell you?â I ask her, curious what she thinks.
âNo,â she replies, smiling. âItâs just that, of all the people you couldâve gone for, Lana Rivera is the one?â
Now Iâm smiling too. âYeah ⦠Fate is funny, isnât it?â
âYou know Felix is going to kill you three if he finds out, right?â she says. âHeâs been trying to find a reason to start up the feud again according to Penelope.â
I smirk, sliding my tongue along my teeth as my blood begins to curdle. âOh Iâm ready.â
âI love being friends, but donât involve me in this madness, okay?â she asks.
âDonât worry.â I wink. âI wonât put you in danger.â
âGood. Because I donât intend to stop being friends with Penelope and the Skull & Serpent guys either, just so you know.â
âI know. I donât expect you to,â I reply.
She gets off the bench. âSpeaking of which, theyâre probably wondering where I am. Weâve agreed to have a little get-together with everyone at Fiâs Cups and Cakes.â She licks her lips. âAnd I am not passing up on the opportunity to eat more cupcakes.â
âNathan! Airplanes!â Ro calls from the other end of the playground.
âAnd thatâs my cue,â I muse.
Crystal walks off. âSee you around!â
âHave fun at your little get-together,â I reply as I walk toward my sister. âAnd if you get the chance, throw one in Felixâs face for me, will you?â
She laughs. âOne day Iâm gonna get you to do it yourself!â
âNot in a million years!â I retort, on my way to Ro.
She winks. âIn a million and one, then.â
