Evil Boys: Chapter 57
Evil Boys (Spine Ridge University)
Nathanâs body is shaking. He howls out loud in front of everyone and sinks to his knees, staring at the words in the chat.
Holy fuck, I have never seen him collapse like that.
âWhat the fuck happened?â I ask.
âNathan?â Kai approaches and tries to touch his shoulder, but Nathan grips his wrist and yells, âRomeo took Lana!â
My eyes widen. âWhat?â
âOh fuck no,â Kai grits, stealing Nathanâs phone from his hand to check the message himself.
Then he pulls out his own phone. âIâm calling her.â
âItâs no use. Romeo wouldnât send this if it werenât true.â Nathanâs hands touch down on the ground, his nails digging into the concrete. âThey took her because she saved Ro.â
Little droplets darken the pavement beneath him.
âItâs all my fault. If my parents hadnât committed fraud, if Iâd just saved Ro by myself, if weâd never taken those fucking picturesââ
I grip him by the shoulders and make him look at me. âDonât blame yourself.â
âShe got taken because of me!â he screams.
âWe couldnât protect her because we were too busy arguing over some stupid fucking pictures!â I yell back.
He stares blankly at me for a moment, realizing the fault lies within all of us for not sticking with her even when she hated us the most. And I wrap my arms around him, hugging him tightly. He molds into my embrace, burying his face into my neck.
âWeâll get her back,â I say.
Iâve never seen him this distraught before.
When shit breaks out, heâs always the strong one, the one who wields his rage as a weapon.
But if he canât gather his anger and use it against them, Iâll be his rock for him.
âI promise.â
Kai
Every beep on the phone makes my heart rate pick up. âSheâs not answering. Dammit.â
Sheâs never not picked up when I called, which means she really is in trouble.
Fuck.
My fist balls at the thought of someone snatching my little kitty. If thereâs one thing you donât do, itâs mess with a guyâs kitty cat.
My Lana ⦠stolen from me.
Someoneâs going to bleed empty today.
âWait ⦠are you telling me the same guys we saved your sister from now went after your girlfriend?â Blaine asks with narrowed eyes.
âYes,â I reply through gritted teeth. âExcept she wouldnât have been fucking taken if weâd been able to keep an eye on her, which we fucking couldnât because of that picture Caleb shared, which made her hate us.â
âWhich I didnât,â Caleb interjects, and I scowl at him.
âI see â¦â Blaine mutters under his breath, and he turns to look at the guys watching us from the door opening to the Tartarus House.
âAll right, Caleb, you go with them to save her.â
âWhat?â Caleb rasps.
âYou heard me,â Blaine says.
He runs his fingers through his hair. âIâm not even responsible for this fucking mess, and now I get to shoulder the blame?â
âCaleb. Itâs settled. Youâre going with them,â Blaine commands.
âFuck no, Iâm not going anywhere with those threeââ
âYou wanna take it up with Ares?â Blaine raises a single brow.
It immediately shuts Caleb up.
âGood. Then itâs settled,â Blaine says.
âWeâre gonna need more help, though,â Milo says, looking up at Blaine. âPlease?â
Blaine makes a face and rubs his lips together. âI really have to stay out of this one. I already came along the last time. I canât keep riskingââ
âYeah, yeah, we get it,â Nathan interjects, and he grabs Miloâs arm and drags him away. âLetâs go.â
We walk back across campus with Caleb veering to the side of the group, staying as far away as possible from us as he can. I donât mind as long as he sticks around and fights when we need him to. Whether he is or isnât responsible remains a point of dispute, but if he helps us get her out of there, it might clear him of the blame.
âWait â¦â Milo pauses midway past the Skull & Serpent House. He points at his chest, and my eyes widen when I spot the red dot. âWhy is there a marker on me?â
âTake another step and Iâll put you all down,â someone growls from the top window.
âWhat theâHave you gone insane?â Nathan yells at the sniper.
He lifts his head above the rifle, and my eyes widen when I see itâs Alistair. âMight want to check your back.â
As he turns around, Felix pummels him in the face. âYou motherfucker! Youâre the one who took those pictures of my sister, arenât you?â
Caleb snorts.
Nathan growls at him, âOw, fuck! Whatâs so funny?â
âYou punch, you get punched. Weâve gone full circle now,â Caleb says.
A metal barrel prods into my back. âMake one wrong move and Iâll make you crawl for the rest of your life.â
I raise my hands, not wanting to get shot. âWow, calm down. Weâre just passing through.â
âLike hell you are,â Dylan grits. âYou three were in that picture that got shared all around campus. You involving Lana in murder now?â
I snort and let out a big sigh.
âYou think this is funny?â Felix asks, punching Nathan in the gut before turning his attention to me.
âYes, considering she was the one who killed him,â I say.
His eyes widen in surprise. I guess he didnât know his sister as well as he thought.
But itâs all out now anyway, might as well get rid of the last secret still standing.
âNo fucking way,â Felix says.
âYou think sheâs all sweet and innocent?â I say. âSheâs been killing longer than you can imagine.â
âFuck no, my sister would neverââ
âShe likes it.â I lick my lips at the sight of his rage.
He grips my collar and looks me dead in the eyes. âGive me one good reason not to shoot you point blank right now.â
âYou wonât because sheâll hate you for it,â I say, tilting my head.
âYouâre a liar,â Felix says through gritted teeth.
âAsk her yourself,â I say.
âWhere is she?â he seethes.
âGone.â
âWhat the fuck do you mean gone?â
âPull back your men, and Iâll tell you,â I say.
His nostrils twitch, but after a while, he throws a single look at Dylan and Alistair, who was still trying to snipe us down from the window. The red dot disappears, and Dylanâs gun is removed from my back.
âThank you,â I say.
âTell me where my sister is,â Felix says with a stern voice.
âShe was taken,â Nathan fills in for me, his face full of worry. âBones Brotherhood.â
Felixâs pupils dilate, and he releases me from his grasp to march right over to Nathan. âYou let her get taken by those fuckers?!â he screams. âFUCK! What the fuck do they want with her?â
âRevenge,â Nathan replies. âShe went into their club and killed a bunch of them.â
âWhy? Why the fuck would she?â Felix growls. âShe wouldnât fucking do that.â
âShe would ⦠to save my sister,â Nathan says, averting his eyes.
âThat sounds out of character,â Dylan mutters.
âIs it, though?â I reply. I tilt my head at Felix when he glances at me. âOr is she just good at hiding it?â
âShe saved my sister, and Romeo found her, and heâs taken her fuck knows where,â Nathan says.
Penelope barges out the front door in a simple bathrobe. âWhat the hell is going on here? I was trying to take a shower, and then I hear you all screaming.â She looks at all three of us and sighs out loud. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWe just collected our little helper over here,â Milo says, placing his hand on Calebâs shoulder.
Alistair calls out from the window, âIs that a Tartarus guy?â
âYep. Heâs gonna help us free Lana, arenât you, Caleb?â Nathan says, folding his arms. âIâm sure you donât want to disappoint these three Skull & Serpent Society guys. Felix here is Lanaâs brother.â
Calebâs eyes narrow, his muscles tightening. He knows itâs a threat.
Nathan makes a tsk sound, but I throw him a glare, and he keeps his mouth shut.
âFree Lana?â Penelope mutters. âWhat do you mean? Where is she?â
âThe Bonesmen took her,â Dylan says.
âOh God.â Penelope plants her hand against her mouth. âI told her about their location.â
âYou did what?â Felix snarls at her.
She folds her arms and sneers, âShe asked for my help, so I gave it to her.â
âTo save my sister,â Nathan fills in.
âSheâd really go through all that trouble for you?â Dylan mutters.
Nathan raises his brow. âDoes it sound so hard to believe?â
âYes, yes, it does,â Alistair yells from the top window.
Felix balls his fists. âI knew I shouldnât have let her get close to you three. Sheâs in this shit because of you!â He tries to hit me again, but Penelope stops him.
âDonât! Not again! She asked you not to fight!â
âCan we go now?â Caleb says impatiently. âMy blade is itching, and if I donât shove it into one of those Bones Brotherhood fuckers soon, it might want a taste of your blood first.â
âShut it,â Nathan grits. âWeâre working on it.â
âLook, I hate them as much as you do for what they did to my sister,â Penelope says to Felix.
âFor your information, we didnât want to do any of it. You know we were forced. My parents would be reported to the feds if I didnât oblige,â Nathan says.
âSo much for that because theyâre still in jail,â Dylan quips, and the remark almost makes Nathan snap.
âAnd you? Whatâs your excuse?â Penelope rasps at me.
âI owe his family a lot,â I say, swallowing. âI did what I had to for my friend.â
âIf sheâs really in trouble, thereâs no time for random chitchat,â Alistair calls from the window.
Penelope makes a tsk sound but keeps her mouth shut. âFine. If Lanaâs in trouble, we gotta save her first.â
âWait, what?â Milo mutters. âWe?â
âYou didnât think weâd let you go out there by yourself, did you?â Penelope quips, and she rushes back into the house. âWait here.â
âWait, youâre not thinking of inviting them to come with us, are you?â Nathan growls at me.
âNo oneâs inviting anyone,â Felix retorts, flashing his knife. âIâm coming to save my fucking sister.â
A lopsided smirk forms on my face. The protectiveness runs in the family, I see.
âAll right,â I say. âAs long as you keep your boys away from us.â
âYou stay in your lane; Iâll stay in mine,â Felix snarls, going back inside with Penelope. âYou stay.â
âThereâs no way Iâd ever step one foot into the Skull & Serpent Society building,â Nathan says.
âI would,â Milo muses, shrugging.
Nathan throws him a look. âYou just want them to hurt you.â
âHow do you know me so well?â Milo winks.
Caleb makes a gag motion. âSorry, I just threw up a little.â
âAnd thereâs a reason I left your ass for his,â Nathan retorts.
âNo time for being petty,â I tell them. âWe have a job to do. Letâs do it properly.â
âDo you even know where weâre supposed to go?â I turn my head to see Alistair casually strolling out of their door.
I shrug. âWeâll go to the same club and see if theyâre hiding out there. If not, Iâll find someone and make them tell.â
âNo need.â Penelope throws a giant bag on the ground in front of us. âI already know where theyâre keeping her.â
I bend over and zip it open, marveling at the number of guns and weapons inside.
Felix pushes a magazine into his gun. âFor where weâre going, youâd better pray thatâs enough.â
