Evil Boys: Chapter 63
Evil Boys (Spine Ridge University)
When we return to campus, Milo and I haul Nathan into the nurseâs office through the schoolâs back entrance.
She shrieks when she enters the room in her nightgown, carrying a gun. âJesus Christ, I thought you were burglars!â
âPlease help us,â I say, breathing ragged breaths.
âWhat the ⦠youâre students, arenât you?â
I nod.
âWhat happened to you?â she asks, putting down the gun. âItâs the middle of the night!â
âDoes it matter?â Milo asks.
She sighs out loud and waves her hand around. âPut him on the bed.â
We do as she asks, dragging him all the way to the bed.
âTurn him over,â she says, grabbing her supplies.
He groans from the pain as we flip him over. âFuck.â
âYou want my help? No swearing,â the old lady grumbles.
He groans again. âA little hard when youâve been shot in the back.â
âIs he going to be okay?â Milo asks.
âLet me check,â she says, rolling his way on her little chair.
She grabs her tools and starts digging into his wound. He roars from agony.
âThatâs a bullet,â she says, and she eyes us both suspiciously. âYours?â
I shake my head. âWeâve made enemies.â
âSo it seems.â She narrows her eyes.
âCan you take it out?â Milo asks.
âIâll try,â she replies, grabbing a syringe.
She shoves it into his side, and he hisses from the pain. âJesus, did you have to get a needle that big?â
âStop whining, boy,â she says. âItâs a sedative.â
âOh â¦â Nathan sighs, and Milo hides a little bit of laughter.
âItâll still hurt a little, though,â the nurse says as she digs into his back.
Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Lana storms in, completely covered in blood. âIs he alive?â
The nurse looks up, her tool still stuck in Nathanâs back, and her eyes widen in shock at the sight of all that blood. âOh my God.â
âItâs not mine,â Lana says swiftly, laughing it off.
âWhat happened to you?â
âGood question,â she says, grasping a few paper towels to wipe herself off, but itâs no use. âIâm fine. I just want to know if Nathanâs okay?â
âWorking on it,â Nathan groans back.
She immediately walks to him and grabs his hand. âI was worried.â
âWorried? About me?â he retorts, coughing, then cringing from the pain. âIâll be fine. Itâs just a flesh wound.â
I laugh. âYouâre only saying that because sheâs here.â
âShut up,â Nathan retorts.
The nurse plucks out the bullet, and he grunts in pain again, gripping the bedding with his free hand. âGoddammit.â
The nurse smashes a cotton soaked with alcohol into the wound, making him hiss even harder. âWhat did I say about swearing?â
âSo is he going to be okay?â Lana asks.
The nurse sews him up. âHeâll be fine.â
We all breathe a collective sigh of relief.
When sheâs done, he rolls over again on his back. âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome,â she replies, then turns her attention to Lana. âNow let me look at you.â She pulls Lanaâs face toward her. âThatâs a big cut. Whereâd you get that?â
âNowhere,â Lana mutters, looking anxious.
She inspects her arm next. âAnd that stab wound?â
She shrugs and eyes Nathan. âI protected him.â
He smiles. âYou did.â
The nurse cleans her wounds with an alcohol pad and sutures her cuts too. âThere. Finished. Hereâs a towel too.â The nurse chucks a wet one her way. âTo clean up the blood.â
âThank you,â she replies.
âAre you two good?â the nurse asks Milo and me.
I nod. âNo wounds, other than a couple of scratches.â
âSame,â Milo adds.
She narrows her eyes at us like she doesnât believe us.
âWhat about Nathan? What do we do with him now?â Lana asks.
âHe needs rest.â
âThatâs it?â I ask.
She shrugs. âThatâs it. If it starts to fester, you call me.â
Suddenly, the door smacks open again and in step Felix, Penelope, Alistair, and Dylan.
The nurseâs eyes widen. âOh God. Not you three.â
âWhat?â Dylan says.
âIâm not going to do this again,â the nurse says, sighing as she waves them away. âWhatever your business is, you can do it on your own. I donât care if you stay here. Just donât touch my stuff. Iâm going back to sleep.â
She waltzes past them and throws the door shut.
âWell, that was interesting,â Penelope mutters, laughing a little.
âShe really hates our guts,â Alistair says.
âWe didnât even do anything,â Dylan adds.
Penelope folds her arms and stares at him. âReally?â
Dylan just shrugs and walks off whistling.
Felix approaches us and focuses on Lana. âYou okay?â
She nods. âBetter now that Iâm here.â
Caleb comes in too, clearing his throat. âI see you all made it out alive.â
Nathan tries to sit up, but itâs tough. âThank you for helping.â
âSure. So weâre done here?â Caleb asks.
Nathan nods. âSorry I blamed you.â
âYeah.â He runs his fingers through his hair. âItâs all good. Keep this on the rain check for when I need yâall, okay?â he says, winking. âSee ya.â
And he walks off again, closing the door behind him.
âThanks, I guess?â Lana mutters.
âI thought he was the one who shared your picture,â Nathan says, reaching for her.
âYeah, about that â¦â She grabs his hand. âCrystal did it.â
Nathanâs eyes widen. âCrystal? No, she wouldnâtââ
âIt was an accident. She didnât mean to do it.â She interjects, swallowing back the tears. âI wanted to forgive her, but I never had the chance to tell her. And now sheâs gone.â
I swallow back the anger and take her into my embrace, hugging her tight.
âCrystal â¦â Nathan grinds his teeth together as he looks at me. âWe have to go look for her. Sheâs my friend too.â
I nod, still hugging Lana tight. âWeâll do our best.â
âHey â¦â Felix growls.
When he sees how Lana leans into me, he backs off again.
âIâm sorry,â she murmurs at all three of us. âFor yelling and not believing you.â
âWe understand why you had to,â I answer, tilting her chin up. âYou donât have to apologize. You did nothing wrong.â
She swallows. âBut I hurt you guys.â
âTrue,â Nathan says.
âAnd got yourself into some nasty trouble,â Milo says, snorting.
âBut we saved you,â Penelope says, winking.
âIâd get hit by ten more bullets if it meant I could keep you safe,â Nathan brags, groaning when he moves too much. âOkay, maybe nine.â
âThank you, everyone,â Lana says, smiling at us. âI canât believe you all worked together.â
âYou think Iâd just abandon my sister?â Felix scoffs, making a tsk sound.
I grab her shoulder and whisper into her ear, âIâll stay here. Go talk with him.â
âHe knows everything now, doesnât he?â she whispers back.
I nod. âEveryone saw the picture. We can spin a story for the rest of the students, but itâll take a bigger lie to convince him â¦â
âNo, itâs all right. I want him to know the truth,â she answers, looking at me intently before heading toward Felix.
âYou think sheâll come back?â Milo asks. âYou know, since the deal we had no longer exists.â
A devilish smirk forms on my face. âWhat do you know about cats?â
He frowns, confused. âI donât know? They have nine lives?â
I lick my lips as I watch her walk into the hallway together with Felix, but before she disappears, she throws one last glance at me. âA cat will always know the way back home.â
