Evil Boys: Chapter 69
Evil Boys (Spine Ridge University)
A few days later
âYou called?â I close the door to my fatherâs office.
His eyes immediately home in on the wound on my arm, so I rub it with my hand to try to hide it.
âYouâre hurt,â he says.
âIt was just a fall. No biggie.â
He steps away from his desk. âHow are you doing?â
I frown, not knowing how to answer. âGood, I guess.â
âI saw the picture.â
Oh God.
âIt was an accident,â I say, mortified. âIââ
âIf those three boys hurt you, tell me now, and I will end them.â He grips my face tightly. âNo expulsion. No trial. Death.â
His words resonate in my soul. Iâve never heard him say heâd actually murder someone out loud, and it makes me admire him even more.
âNo,â I say, shaking my head. âThey didnât. It was a private picture that accidentally got shared.â
âWho else has seen it?â
âProbably the entire school,â I say, biting my lip.
He closes his eyes and rubs them. âItâs okay. Weâll fix this.â
âThe boys are already telling everyone it was a staged scene at an escape room and that none of it was real.â
âClever.â He frowns. âWait. The boys?â His eyes flash with concern. âSo it was real? You are having sex with these boys?â
My cheeks heat as I blush. Admitting this to my father is a big deal to me.
âBut what about Jason?â
âHe wasnât there for me when I needed him, so I ended it, and then he tried to hurt me,â I explain.
His nostrils flare. âI will have him expelled.â
I shake my head. âThatâll only anger his parents, and I donât want anyone else coming for Spine Ridge or the Rivera family. Let him stay, and Iâll ignore him as best as I can. Heâs out of the Skull & Serpents anyway.â
My father caresses my cheek with his thumb. âI just want to protect my little girl.â
Tears well up in my eyes. âI know.â
âThat picture was not easy to see,â he says.
Iâm embarrassed, but maybe Iâll survive this.
âIâm sorry.â I avert my eyes. âI didnât want it to end up in the wrong hands, let alone yours. I never wanted you to see me like that.â
âWhat about that body? Is thatââ
I inhale sharply. âThat was a guy who hurt young girls. Consistently. And I couldnât let it slide.â
My fatherâs eyes twitch with curiosity.
âMaria?â
An assistant steps in.
âBring in Nathan, Kai, and Milo.â
My eyes widen. âYou already brought them here?â
âYou think I havenât watched you while you were here on these campus grounds?â He smiles. âYou underestimate your own fatherâs obsessive need to keep track of the dangers his kids put themselves in.â
I snort and hide my laughter behind my hand.
Of course, heâd be just as deranged as me.
A knock on the door follows, and in step all three boys ⦠along with my brother.
The assistant peers over their shoulders and says, âYour son is here too.â
âFelix?â I mutter as they all step inside. âWhat are you doing here?â
âDad asked me to come.â He closes the door behind him. âWhatâs this about? Why are they here too?â
âIâd wanted to ask if you knew anything about that picture.â He eyes all of the boys as his hands dive into his pockets. âI donât want any of you hiding things from me.â
Felix leans back against the wood with his arms crossed. âIâm not hiding anything.â
âAnd you â¦â My father narrows his eyes at Kai, Nathan, and Milo. âYou took a picture of my daughter in a precarious position and shared it with the world?â
âIt was a mistake,â Nathan mutters.
âAn accident,â Kai adds. âIt wasnât on purpose.â
âRight. But it did happen.â
âIâm sorry, itâs my fault,â Nathan says. âI was careless.â
âYes, you were.â
CLICK!
The noise alerts me.
Heâs got a gun.
I immediately step in front of the three boys, unafraid of the bullets heâs threatening them with. âDonât.â
âLana!â Felix growls. âDonât do it!â
âTell me why you choose to protect them,â my father grits, incensed.
Seconds feel like hours.
âBecause I love them!â Iâve never felt something so fiercely in my heart.
But now that itâs finally out in the open, I feel relieved.
âAnd we love her,â Kai says, stepping forward to grasp my hand and lace his fingers through mine. âAnd if you want to kill me for loving your daughter, then fucking kill me now because I will never, ever, stop loving her harder than the day before.â
My heart almost jumps from my chest because of his unabashed devotion.
âIâll take a bullet for you. I already did so once, and Iâd do it again and again,â Nathan says, stepping up to grasp my other hand. âIâm the one responsible. Kill me if you must.â
âNo,â Milo says, stepping in front of all of us. âI will not let you hurt the people I love.â
My fatherâs jaw tenses, but his body relaxes just a little bit. âLove â¦â
âYes. Do you remember what that felt like?â I ask.
His lip rises in disgust. âNo. Iâve not felt the love of a woman or for a woman since your mother destroyed it with her bare hands.â
The pause that follows feels like it lasts an eternity.
CLICK!
The gunâs safety is put back on, the sound making me feel like I can breathe again.
He puts his gun away. âBut I love my kids, and Iâd do anything to protect you.â Tears well up in my eyes as he approaches. âIf you still want these boys, despite the fact they hurt you ⦠then Iâll accept your choice.â
My father places a hand on Miloâs shoulder. âYouâre a brave guy.â
âThanks,â he gulps.
âThat body in that picture, did you clean it up?â he asks like itâs no big deal.
The boys all nod in silence, all stupefied by how easy he makes it sound.
âGood.â
âWait, youâre not mad?â Nathan asks.
âOf course, Iâm mad. But that doesnât stop the killings because if it did, you wouldnât be doing it in the first place,â he retorts.
âI thought you summoned us here to expel us,â Milo mutters.
âI was going to kill you, actually.â
Miloâs face turns ghostly white.
âBut seeing as how that would upset my little girl, I opted not to,â he muses like itâs the most normal thing on earth.
âHow many more have you killed?â he asks.
âPlenty,â Kai responds. âMore than I can count on two hands.â
âAnd was she there?â
I blush again. âThat kill was actually mine. Along with a bunch of others.â
He sighs softly, shaking his head, and rubs his forehead with his fingers. âI shouldâve known it wouldnât skip a generation.â
âWait ⦠What?â Felix mutters. âYou knew? All this time? And you didnât say anything?â
âYou think I donât know what youâre both capable of?â my father retorts, tilting his head. âYouâre my flesh and blood. I know that insatiable hunger. Why do you think I told you to stop fighting? I knew you two would be dragged to that dark side if you didnât.â
âWow,â Milo mutters, snorting. âThis is a turn of events.â
âDad,â I mutter. âI â¦â
âYou donât have to explain yourself.â
He places his hand on my shoulder, and memories flash through my mind like a movie running at two-hundred times the normal pace. My tiny self, searching for the bathroom, finding a light on in my brotherâs room, seeing my mother in his bed â¦
The gun from the cabinet ⦠and a firm hand on my shoulder.
A sharp breath follows.
âDad â¦â
âWhat is it?â Dad says.
Tears well up in my eyes. âYou didnât kill Mother, did you?â
I look up into his eyes, which yield to my gaze like only a fatherâs eyes would when heâs tried so hard to protect his daughter from reality.
My lips part. âI did, didnât I?â
This truth has haunted my soul for years.
It takes him a few seconds to reply. âYes.â
His face contorts with a pain unlike any other, and he pulls me away from the boys only to hug me so tightly all the waterworks begin to flow.
âIâm sorry,â I say.
âDonât. Donât apologize.â His hand wraps firmly around my hair, stroking me. âYou have nothing to be sorry for. You did the right thing.â
âI killed her,â I say.
Felix stands in the corner, silently watching us, but the pained look in his eyes makes me cry even harder.
âYou saw something unforgivable, and when I found you in his room with that gun, I took it from you.â
âYou told me you were the one who shot her,â I murmur against his chest.
âI didnât want you to live with that guilt,â he says. âSo I lied to shield you from the truth.â
âLana â¦â Felix murmurs, and he approaches, wrapping his arms around us too. âIâm sorry, I didnât know.â
I wail loudly, crying out the tears Iâve kept buried deep down with those memories for so long.
âAll those nightmares,â I whisper. âThey were true. Iâm a monster.â
âYouâre not a monster,â Felix responds. âYou saved me.â
My father leans back and cups my face, forcing me to look at him. âYou are loyal. Honest. Smart. Ruthless. And your heart is full of so much love. You are my daughter. And I am proud of you.â
More tears well up in my eyes, but theyâre not tears of despair but tears of pride and joy. And we hug again, harder than we ever have before.
âWell, I donât think Iâve ever seen a more loving family than this,â Milo says, chuckling as he blinks away a few tears of his own.
âIâm jealous,â Nathan says.
âHey, we make a pretty good family,â Kai replies, winking. âBut itâs not complete without her.â
I turn to look at them and smile at my dad, waiting for him to nod before joining Kai, Nathan, and Milo and embracing them too.
âAre you okay?â Milo asks.
I nod. âYeah. It was heavy. But Iâm glad itâs finally out of my system.â
âYou really killed your own mother, huh?â Kai says. âSavage. I like it.â
I snort and playfully punch him in the shoulder.
âSo youâre gonna live with them now?â Felix asks.
âIf itâs okay with Dad,â I respond, looking at my father, who just shrugs.
âThe sororities and fraternities are normally separated ⦠but I donât see why I couldnât make an exception for my own daughter.â He winks. âAs long as you donât go screaming it off the roofs so other students come begging me for the same privilege.â
I laugh. âI wonât. Promise.â
âAnd I need you to keep your grades up,â he adds, raising a brow. âNo more slacking off. You want to go on a killing spree? Fine, but if you start to fail, you answer to me.â
âOkay, I get it,â I reply.
âNo worries, sir. Weâll keep her on track,â Nathan says, saluting him.
âI doubt you will,â my father responds.
Kai laughs and pats a defeated Nathan on the back. âYou tried.â
âIâll make sure you keep your word, donât worry,â Felix says, throwing them a warning look.
âOh, Iâm so scared,â Milo says, winking, which makes Felix growl out loud.
âAll right, out of my office. All of you,â my father says with a sigh. âIâve got work to do and messes to clean up.â
When we all exit the door, he adds, âOh, and donât kill anyone here at school, please. For your own sakes.â
âNot even them?â Felix says, pointing at Kai, Nathan, and Milo with his thumb.
Kaiâs eyes become half-mast. âYou wouldnât stand a chance.â
âWanna bet on that?â
âBoys â¦â I sigh out loud. âI thought we were over this.â
âYouâre still my little sister.â Felix grabs me and rubs my hair with his fist just like he used to, messing up my look. âDidnât I tell you not to talk to those fuckers?â
âToo late,â Kai scoffs, snorting after.
âYeah, our dicks have already been in there. Weâre way past the talking stage,â Nathan muses, watching Felix combust with rage.
I physically have to stop him from acting out, and the boys laugh in unison.
âYou motherfââ
I plant a finger onto Felixâs lips. âAh. Zip it. I donât want to hear it.â
âButââ
I throw him a stern look, just like our dad just did.
âI get it. Youâre my big bro. You wanna protect me.â I glance at Kai, Milo, and Nathan over my shoulder. âBut I have them too now. So youâll just need to get along for me. Okay?â
His eyes twitch with annoyance, and he folds his arms. Then he sighs out loud. âFine.â
I hug him tight. âThank you.â
âYeah, yeah. Go. Before I change my mind,â he says, pushing me in their direction.
And the boys welcome me with open arms, kissing me on the cheek right in front of the entire damn school.
And you know what?
I donât give a care in the world.
