The Dixon Rule: Chapter 19
The Dixon Rule (Campus Diaries, 2)
âI DONâT WANT TO GET MARRIED ANYMORE.â
The glum statement comes from Ryder, who sits on the other end of the couch, stone faced.
I do my best not to laugh at him. âHate to break it to you, bro, but youâre already married.â
Itâs Friday night, and Iâm over at the townhouse that, until a few weeks ago, I shared with Ryder and Beckett. Now, Willâs in my old room, and soon Ryder will be moving in with his new wife. Who heâs already thinking of forsaking, it appears.
I know where heâs coming from, though. From what heâs told me, Gigiâs family has gone overboard with this wedding. A wedding theyâre only having because Gigiâs father, the legendary Garrett Graham, is apparently a secret softie and wants to walk his only daughter down the aisle. I donât begrudge him thatâI can totally see my dad doing the same thing with Maryanne. Not that sheâs ever getting married. Maryanneâs precious cargo. Iâve already decided that when she turns sixteen, Iâm going to sit her down and talk to her about the benefits of becoming a nun. I think a convent would be a really good place for her.
âMaybe itâs not too late to get a divorce,â Ryder says, his tone so hopeful that I canât help but snort.
âYou donât want a divorce. Youâre obsessed with that woman.â I shrug. âBesides, the wedding wonât be too bad. I, for one, am looking forward to getting absolutely wasted and seeing how many bridesmaids Beckett manages to hook up with.â
âI mean, youâre already banging the maid of honor, so thatâs at least one he canât score with.â
Not quite, but now that Dixon told Gigi we were dating, itâs understandable that Ryder thinks weâve banged each other already. I suppose I could let him keep thinking it, but I also donât want to besmirch Dianaâs reputation.
âActually, we havenât had sex yet,â I say.
âBullshit.â
âItâs true. Weâre taking it slow.â
âSince when do you take things slow?â The question comes from Will, who pokes his head out of the kitchen. Itâs just him and Ryder here, while Beckett is in Australia.
He walks in chugging a bottle of water and dressed like heâs going out. Dark jeans encase his long legs, and his blue button-down is the same light shade as his eyes.
âYou off somewhere?â Ryder asks.
âYeah, heading to the city,â Will tells him. âActually, Iâm meeting your wife and your girlfriendââhe nods toward meââfor drinks.â
Ryder narrows his eyes. âGisele said it was girlsâ night.â
âWhat can I tell ya? Diana invited me.â He flashes me a smug look. âYour girlfriend likes me better than you.â
âProbably,â I agree. âI annoy the fuck out of her.â
Ryder snickers. âHow did this happen, anyway?â
âNah, I saw it coming,â Will says. âThey made out at the pool party, and we all had to pretend it was for a dare.â
I ignore Willâs smirk and glance at Ryder. âI donât know. It sort of happened and now Iâve got a girlfriend.â
He lifts his eyebrows. âMade it exclusive pretty fast.â
âI canât exactly not be exclusive. Sheâs Gigiâs best friend and Iâm not looking to get murdered. But donât read too much into it. Girlfriend is just for lack of a better term.â
âDude, heâs downplaying it,â Will says to Ryder. âItâs serious as fuck. He entered a dance competition with her.â
My best friendâs head swings toward me. I swallow a groan. I was hoping to keep that to myself for a while longer.
âWhat do you mean you entered a dance competition? Whatâs happened to you since you moved out? Who are you?â
âYouâre asking who I am? You got married,â I shoot back. âYou changed first, man. Donât put this on me. Youâre the one who ruined our friendship.â
He snickers and flips up his middle finger.
âHow did you know about the dance thing?â I direct the question to Will. Iâm deeply suspicious now.
âDiana announced it on Ride or Dance.â
âWhat the fuck is Ride or Dance?â Then it hits me, the memory of her and Kenji filming that day at the pool. âOh no. She didnât.â
Will grins at me.
Leaning toward the coffee table, I grab my phone. A minute later, the screen shows the latest video from Dianaâs ridiculous dance account. My stomach drops when I realize she has over a hundred thousand followers. Kill me now.
The volume is on silent, so I turn it up and press play. Dianaâs high, bubbly voice blares out of my phone.
âHello, dancers! I wanted to give you a quick update on NUABC. Kenji is out. No, donât get all dramatic. We didnât have a huge fight. He simply decided that superyachts are more important than me. Although, who can blame him? Superyachts probably are more important than me. But yes, heâs going to be spending his summer on the Mediterranean, which means he wonât be able to compete, so Iâve had to find a new partner. And I think, judging by all the comments on our last video, a lot of you will be happy with this partner reveal. You guessed itâI am indeed talking about Asshole Neighbor.â
Ryder snorts mid-sip of his beer.
âOh, and youâll love this too. Asshole Neighbor is now also Trial Boyfriend.â
âTrial?â I growl.
Will starts laughing. My friends are dicks.
âIâve decided to give him a shot to prove that he is worthy of my love. So yes, we are dancing, and we are dating. We are dance dating. Itâs going to be glorious. Our rehearsals start this weekend, so stay tuned for some Asshole Neighbor content and all the grief I anticipate him bringing me. All right, Iâm off to bed. Good night, dancers.â
âShe is so lame.â I groan.
âI think sheâs cute,â Will says.
âWhy donât you date her, then?â
âIâll make sure to tell her you said that when weâre having drinks tonight. Anyway, yeah, I gotta go.â He glances at Ryder. âDonât expect me back tonight. Iâll probably crash at my cousin Robâs in Boston. I think heâs joining us for drinks.â
I shake my head. âHow are you and âRobâââ I make quotations.
âWhy are you using air quotes? Are you implying that Rob is not real?â
ââon a double date with Ryderâs wife and my girlfriend, while he and I are here, not on a date with them?â I finish in disbelief.
âI donât know. Some guys have all the luck.â Will gives an exaggerated shrug and saunters out of the living room.
After the front door closes, Ryderâs dark blue eyes grow sober again. âLook, about you and Diana. Be careful, okay? Like you said, sheâs Gigiâs best friend.â
âTrust me, you donât have to worry.â
Literally. Because itâs fake.
âHonestly,â I insist when I note his dubious expression. âI canât see this lasting too long.â
âNo?â
âSheâs not really my type. You know I prefer a more serious girl. Someone whoâs on the same page as me.â
âAnd what page is that?â
âThe long-term kind.â I shrug. âDixon is great, but she lives in the moment. She acts on these whims, throws herself into random new projects. Sheâs the kind of person whoâs going to, like, take off to Budapest for a year. I donât think sheâs wanting to settle down anytime soon. Weâre just having fun.â
âFair enough.â He rubs the side of his face, thoughtful. âBut if you truly donât see anything long-term with her, donât let her get attached.â
âNah. Sheâs the one insisting we keep it casual,â I lie. âThe girlfriend-boyfriend label is just easier to say than âthis is my friends with benefits,â you know?â
He relaxes. âGot it. So itâs more of a friends-with benefits-sitch.â
âExactly.â
âBut you havenât had sex.â Heâs skeptical again.
âNot yet. But I assume weâll be banging by like, tomorrow.â
He snickers. âAll right.â
âWhat about you?â I say, eager to change the subject. âMarried life treating you okay? Youâre not tired of Gisele yet?â
âNever.â His face softens anytime Gigi is mentioned. And whenever that raw, unconcealed love floods his face, it almost feels like youâre intruding. Like youâve been given a window into an intensely personal thing that doesnât belong to you.
But the dude simply canât disguise his feelings for the woman, which is funny, because Luke Ryder is an expert at hiding his emotions. Since Iâve known him, Iâve never been a hundred percent sure where his headâs at. But thereâs no uncertainty with Gigi. He adores her. Worships her. Sheâs his entire life and he would die for her. Itâs telegraphed in his eyes the moment you say her name.
âBut Iâm really not excited about this wedding,â he admits in a pained voice.
âIâm sorry. But I got you, man. Whatever you need.â
He sighs. âThanks, brother. Iâm gonna need you to ply me with alcohol so I can forget about how many people will be there. Maybe rub my back while I puke.â
I laugh. âYouâll be fine.â
âOh, hey. I forgot to ask youâdo you want to help out at the Hockey Kings camp? Itâs in a few weeks.â
âOh, right. Thatâs in August. Which Harvard guy did they pick to coach with you?â
âTroy Talvo.â
âHeâs good,â I say begrudgingly.
âThe boys are playing a game on the last day and we need some linesmen. You in?â
âWill Garrett and Connelly be there?â
âItâs their camp.â
âThen yes.â
Chuckling, he rolls his eyes at me. âThatâs the only way youâll do it? Not out of the goodness of your heart?â
I grin at him. âI will ruthlessly pursue my own interests and Iâll never apologize for it.â
âDude, Diana can do so much better than you.â
âHa. Like Gigi earned herself a prince.â
âYouâre probably right about that. Theyâre both way out of our leagues.â
