The Dixon Rule: Chapter 47
The Dixon Rule (Campus Diaries, 2)
I BARREL THROUGH THE SYCAMORE LOBBY INTO THE BACK COURTYARD and race down the path toward our building. I gave Richard at the desk about three seconds to answer when I asked, âWhatâs up with the police car?â
All he managed to get out was âThere was an incident with Diana andââ before I was sprinting to Red Birch.
I take the stairs two at a time. Even over my thundering footsteps and thudding pulse, I hear Niallâs muffled voice. âWalk quiet!â
I ignore him. At Dianaâs door, I push on the handle, but itâs locked, so I start banging against the door.
âDixon, let me in. Are you okay?â
Footsteps approach the door. Then it swings open, and I see Gigi.
âWhat happened?â I say instantly. âWhere is she?â
âIn the shower.â
Gigiâs grim face tells me whatever happened tonight wasnât good. I storm inside, peering past her shoulders to find Mya Bell, Gigiâs former roommate, on Dianaâs couch. I give a terse nod of greeting. She flicks up her hand in a quick wave.
âWas it that fucking asshole?â I demand. âPercy?â
Gigi nods. âYeah. He was basically, like, casing the apartment when we got here.â
âWhat do you mean, casing?â
âI donât know, thatâs the best way I can explain it. He wasnât on the property, but a few yards away from the Meadow Hill sign.â Anger colors her cheeks. âDiana spotted his car. She wanted to get out and confront him.â
âI hope you didnât fucking let her.â
âOf course not. We went right in and called the cops. They got here within three minutes, which was impressive. But I guess thereâs no crime in Hastings. They were probably just sitting around waiting for something to happen. The cops questioned Diana, then went to find Percy, who denied breaking the restraining order. He asserted he was beyond the minimum distance.â
âHeâs supposed to stay a hundred yards away from her. If he was parked near the entrance of the driveway, thatâs not a hundred yards.â
âHe claimed where he was parked in relation to Red Birch itself and this apartment is exactly one hundred and eight yards. Supposedly he measured it using satellite imagery.â
âSlimy prick.â
âYeah, Diana was pissed. So now itâs a matter of semantics, and the restraining order is being revised to include this apartment as well as the main building. It was a whole shitshow, and Diana just had enough. Which is why I think you should leave.â
I gape at her. âLike hell Iâm leaving. Iâm going to be right here when she gets out of the shower.â
âShane,â Mya says tentatively.
I glance over. âWhat?â
âYou donât have to put on the act anymore,â Gigi explains. âWe know this isnât a real relationship.â She gestures from me toward the bathroom beyond the hall.
âShe told us everything,â Mya confirms.
âAnd I get it,â Gigi says quietly. âThat was really nice of you to pretend to be her boyfriend while Percy was living here. And you did good, convincing her to report what happened to her. Butâ¦â
âBut what?â I snap.
âBut you led her on.â
My chest squeezes. âIs that what she thinks?â
âWhat else is she supposed to think?â Gigiâs gray eyes flash at me. âShe told you she had feelings for you, and you ditched her to go see your ex-girlfriend.â
âYeah, for closure,â I mutter.
âWhat closure do you need? Didnât she dump your ass a year ago?â Mya remarks from the couch.
I scowl at her. âCan we stop with the commentary?â I scrape both hands over my scalp. âYes, I screwed up, and I know sheâs pissed off. But thereâs nothing between me and Lynsey. I made it very clear to her tonight that I donât want to get back together.â
âRegardless, I donât know if tonight is the night to be dealing withâ¦whatever this is. This fake relationshipââ
âIt isnât fake,â I burst out. âItâs real as fuck. Do you not get that? I love her.â
Gigi blinks. âOh. Seriously?â
I scrub a hand over my face, uncomfortable under Gigiâs and Myaâs surprised scrutiny. My feelings for Diana have been percolating for months now, but this is the first time Iâve been able to give them a label. Love. I fucking love this girl.
I didnât expect the realization to strike in front of an audience, and I wish her friends would just leave already and let me go see my girl.
âSeriously,â I mutter to Gigi. âSo do me a favor and let me take it from here. Please.â
âIâm not leaving.â
âYou said sheâs okay, right? Sheâs pissed but not shaken up. He didnât touch her. So, please, just go. I really appreciate that you drove her home and stayed with her while the cops were here, but Iâm asking you, very nicely, to go now so I can be alone with the woman I love.â
After a long beat, Gigi nods. âFine. But Iâm calling her in an hour, and if she sounds even the least bit upset, Iâm driving back and kicking you out myself.â
âFair. And I mean itâthank you for being here for her. Youâre a good friend. Both of you.â
After they leave, I lock the door and return to the living room. I groan my frustration into my palms while trying to ignore the little spark of fear that asks, What if Gigi and Mya hadnât been with her? What if he somehow found a way toâ
No, I canât even think about that.
But I should have been there, damn it.
âSo you love me.â
I look up and find Diana standing in the hall doorway. Sheâs wrapped in that pink towel she was wearing the first time I saw her in this building. Her cheeks are red from the shower. She walks toward me on bare feet.
âYou heard that, huh?â I say ruefully.
âYep.â Her green eyes sweep over me. âDid you mean it?â
âDo I ever say anything I donât mean?â
She shrugs. âI donât know. It sure looked like you meant it when you chose your ex over me.â
âI didnât choose her over you. I know it seems like that, but I needed to go with her tonight. I had a suspicion I needed to confirm.â
âWhat suspicion?â
âThat my relationship with Lynsey was not as good as I thought it was.â
My words bring a twinkle of humor to her eyes. She bites her lip.
âAre you trying not to laugh?â I demand.
âSort of. I mean, it was so obvious. From everything youâve said about her, it sounds like the relationship was the Lynsey Show and you were just a supporting cast member.â
âI see that now. And I wanted to talk to her tonight so I could tell her all that. And to make sure she knows I donât want to get back together.â
âBut she tried to, didnât she? Just like I said she would.â
âI had a feeling she would too,â I admit.
Diana glares at me. âAnd yet you acted like the idea was so preposterous when I raised it.â
âLook, when she said she broke up with Tyreek, it occurred to me she might try to rekindle things, but thatâs not why I wanted to see her.â
âReally. You didnât want your little ego boost from knowing your ex is dying to get you back?â
âNo. I didnât. I needed to have that final moment with her. We were together for four years. I wanted her to know that we werenât right for each other and that Iâve fallen in love with my girlfriend. My real girlfriend.â
Diana is biting her lip again. But the smile cannot be contained. It bursts through, lighting her entire face. âI donât think youâre lying to me.â
âIâm not,â I say softly. âI donât want anybody else, Dixon. I want you.â
âWhy?â
I furrow my brow.
âIâm serious. Why do you want me?â Sheâs chewing on her bottom lip, and I can practically see the insecurities rolling off her. âIâm drama, remember? I needed to tone myself down before meeting your familyââ
My chest clenches. âFuck. Iâm so sorry I ever gave you the idea that I wanted you to change yourself.â
She clutches the top of her towel to keep it in place. âI wonât,â she says, unwavering. âChange myself, that is. Iâm melodramatic and weird and I argue a lot, and thatâs my personality. If that scares someoneââ
âDoesnât scare me,â I interject. âI donât want you to change. I want you for you. Drama and all.â I grin at her. âSo will you please be my real girlfriend?â
Diana plants one hand on her hip. âIâll have to think about it.â
âGonna make me sweat, huh?â I chuckle.
âFor a little while. But Iâm not mad at you anymore.â
âGood.â
âAndâ¦â She lifts a brow. âI might be falling for you too.â
âFalling?â I feign outrage. âBut Iâve already fallen.â
âIâm not telling you I love you on the night that you chose to go with your ex-girlfriend.â
âFine. I will await it with bated breath.â I approach her towel-clad frame and touch her cheek. âAre you okay? Gigi told me what happened with Percy.â
âIâm fine.â She shakes her head in disbelief. âI just canât believe his arrogance. This sulking asshole sitting there in his car. He told the cops he was out for a drive and just happened to find himself at Meadow Hill, so he pulled over because he wanted to reminisce about our relationship. According to him, there was no malicious intent. It wasnât meant to be a threat.â
âBullshit.â
âI know. But the cops arenât going to do anything because whoever wrote up the restraining order wasnât clear in their language, so heâs off on a technicality. He didnât break it. But either way, Iâm calling Detective Wendt in the morning.â
âDonât worry, Iâm not letting this creep anywhere near you. If he shows up here again, heâs gonna have a word with Shane Junior and Shane the Third.â I raise my right fist and then the left.
âWe need better names for your fists,â Diana says frankly.
âI know. In my defense, Iâve never called them anything before, so I was sort of winging it.â
âWeâll brainstorm.â
âMaybe bring it up at the next HOA meeting,â I suggest.
âGood idea.â Sheâs smiling.
I open my arms. The moment she steps into them, her towel falls to the floor.
I snicker and peer down. âOh. The seduction has started?â
She snorts. âIâm not seducing you. Butâ¦now that Iâm nakedâ¦I guess you can atone for tonightâs sins and give me an orgasm.â
Chuckling, I pick up her naked body, walk to the kitchen counter, and set her ass down on it. âI shall begin my atonement.â
