Chapter 78

Running Into You

Maggie called the doctor first thing Monday and had to wait on hold for several minutes. Once she finally talked with the receptionist, she explained that the recall had everyone in a tizzy.

Women who weren’t pregnant wanted new birth control options and needed to be seen. Women who were pregnant needed to determine how far along they were.

Maggie felt bad for the sweet woman when she told her that she had four confirmed pregnancy tests and needed to be seen.

“I can squeeze you in on Thursday if that works for you, Maggie.”

Maggie said that was fine. She didn’t have much choice. Maggie and Liam kept their news to themselves, still trying to process the insanity of their weekend.

Liam helped Mike get his business startup back on track and even put them on the firm’s health insurance as a consultant until they could get the business up and running.

Liam had a big meeting on Thursday and couldn’t come to the appointment, so Maggie went by herself. She wasn’t too worried as she had been through this before and knew what to expect.

She peed in the cup, had the nurse draw some blood, and got undressed for the exam and ultrasound.

“Hi, Maggie. Looks like you drew the lucky straw,” her doctor joked.

The doctor said she wasn’t the first woman she saw this week and wouldn’t be the last. The drug company was in big trouble and the phrase ‘class action lawsuit’ was being thrown around.

Maggie didn’t have any desire for that, she just wanted to go home and take a nap.

The tech came in and started the ultrasound to see how far along she was.

She moved the wand around and took pictures before concentrating on one area and calling the doctor’s attention to the screen.

“See, Doctor? The second one this week!”

Maggie saw the doctor sigh and turn to face her.

She was panicking at the look on their faces, immediately regretting not having Liam there with her. “Is there something wrong with my baby?”

“No, Maggie, everything looks good. You are about eight weeks along…”

“Why do I sense a ‘but’ coming?”

“Maggie, you are pregnant with twins…”

Maggie sat there, not breathing. The room was spinning. The doctor could see she was not taking the news well and laid her back down on the exam table.

The tech went and got her some water as the doctor watched her pulse and set up a blood pressure cuff.

“Are you okay? How are you feeling?”

“I… You…you’re joking, right? I mean, this has to be a mistake!”

“No Maggie, I’m not. I know this comes as a shock—”

“No shit, Sherlock!”

The doctor suppressed a smile. “You will be just fine. You can do this!”

“I had a panic attack at the prospect of having three children under three on Saturday. But four? I don’t know if I can do this! And you and I both know they will be boys.

“I will have four boys within three years of each other, all looking like their incredibly sexy father and creating havoc for the female population in fifteen years! That’s what got me in this situation! What am I going to do?”

Maggie looked at the two medical professionals and burst into tears, unable to do anything else. The tech gave her a glass of water as the doctor sat next to her and rubbed her back. This was not the first time they had seen this exact scene several times over the last week.

Maggie took a few breaths. The doctor walked her to the appointment window to make her next visit.

Maggie took the card, climbed into her car, and sat there. She looked at the two car seats in the back and knew she was done with this car. She couldn’t fit two more car seats in the back.

She sighed, sitting back she thought about how much life was going to change in the next few months.

Maggie started the car and drove to Liam’s office with the ultrasound picture in her purse. As she got closer to the tall building downtown, Maggie’s temper flared.

She was pissed at what was happening and was going to make sure her husband knew it. She parked, stomped into the building, waved to the security officers, and punched the up arrow.

She got on the elevator and waited for the car to come to a stop and the doors to open. She stormed down the hallway toward his office, passing his flustered secretary without a word.

Maggie opened the door, stepped in, and saw Liam with Liza and Henry sitting at the conference table. She slammed the door, and the three siblings jumped. Liam’s face broke out into a smile.

“Darling! How are you?”

“Don’t you ~darling~ me! You are in big trouble, you dick!”

Henry snickered and wondered what his brother had done this time. Liza was a little nervous.

“Should we pop out and give you two a moment?”

“Oh, no! You two can stay and hear how your bloody idiot of a brother is going to make this up to me!”

“Um, make up for what? I thought you just went to the doctor. Is everything okay, darling?”

Maggie dug in her purse, pulled out the ultrasound picture, and slapped it on the table in front of the Olsen siblings.

“Oh, Mags, you’re pregnant! Congratulations!” Henry smiled.

“Isn’t it a little soon, sweetheart?” Liza gently asked.

“Oh, this wasn’t planned, Liza! I was on birth control pills!” Maggie fumed.

“Ah, I saw the news story. Sorry, Mags,” Henry said with a knowing nod. “Bad luck, old boy!”

“Oh, you don’t know the half of it!” Maggie fumed.

“Darling, what happened? Why are you upset? Tell me, Maggie,” Liam asked, kissing her head as he pulled her in for a hug.

“Well for starters, you can’t keep your hands or your dick to yourself and you’re so damn sexy and you sweet talk me until I drop my pants and end up in bed!

“Then, I get pregnant because of these pills being faulty. ~Then,~ to cap it off, I go to the doctor and she drops a bombshell on me! Look at the ultrasound. Look closely!”

The three of them peered at the picture, trying to figure out what she was showing them. Then Liam saw it and gasped. “Baby A… Baby B… Bloody hell… Twins!”

Henry started laughing after hearing his brother’s words but stopped instantly when he saw the look on Maggie’s face. Maggie started crying again, and Liam pulled her closer and held her in his arms.

“It’s going to be okay, darling. I’m going to do everything in my power to make it okay and easier. I promise!”

“Oh, you bet you will! Sex whenever I want, we’re getting a housekeeper to help with the cleaning and cooking, and Tonya needs to be around more. I want to take one more class next semester.”

“I think that sounds perfectly reasonable, darling. Whatever you want!”

“Oh, and you are buying me a new car because mine won’t hold any more car seats! And I mean any car I want!”

Liza flashed her a big grin and knew she was going to make her brother pay for this. She couldn’t imagine the thoughts and feelings running through Maggie’s head.

Liza would be scared out of her mind if she faced the prospect of four toddlers. She shuddered at the thought. William was starting to raise the issue of having another baby, but she wasn’t sure.

Liam was hugging his wife tightly and gently rocking her.

“Henry, let’s leave these two horn dogs to themselves before our brother loses more of his money to Maggie’s whims.”

They hugged and left as Maggie flopped on the couch. Liam sat next to her and took her hand in his, rubbing soothing circles. He loved the feel of her soft skin and could never get enough of it.

And that’s what got them in this predicament in the first place, him not being able to keep his hands off her.
