Chapter 87: Unbearable Memories

Dad, Stay Away from My Mom

"Yeah, I love the big, beautiful classrooms there. And there are so many animals! I saw horses, cows, sheep, rabbits, and even a little mouse," Sam said, his eyes sparkling with joy.

"A mouse?" Melinda was taken aback. A prestigious school with mice?

The thought made her skin crawl. She had been bitten by a mouse on her toe when she was little, and the infection had almost cost her her foot. A young doctor who had just returned from abroad had saved her with an antiviral injection.

Since then, she had dreamed of becoming a doctor or working in the medical field.

Scott had supported her dream, saying that being a doctor was a noble profession. But after Scott went missing, Connie remarried not long after.

Bobby, her stepfather, was a man with a volatile temper, and his cold, indifferent always sent shivers down her spine.

He scoffed at her dreams, always saying, "Where do you think we have the money to send you to college, let alone medical school? Stop dreaming!"

Bobby's harsh reality was like a bucket of cold water, dousing the flames of hope in her heart.

He even threatened that if she didn't drop out of school and get married, he wouldn't be kind about it.

Connie, standing by silently, would just sigh and advise her to finish high school and get a job to avoid being a burden on the family.

Her heart felt like it was being torn apart, filled with pain and despair.

She couldn't believe that the once happy and lively home had become so cold and heartless.

Every word from Bobby was like a sharp knife, cutting deep into her heart.

From then on, her allowance was strictly limited to two hundred dollars a month.

That amount was barely enough to cover her expenses.

She had to pay for tuition, buy books and materials, and even worry about daily living expenses.

Dictiteruntin'n'tyverups.

She knew that only through her own efforts could she achieve her seemingly unreachable dream.

So, she began a long journey of working part-time, studying hard during the day, and working at a restaurant or tutoring at night to earn money.

Her hard work finally paid off. Because of her excellent grades, she was offered a spot

at a top international school. The news was like a breath of fresh air, clearing away all the gloom in her heart.

Tuition was covered, but she had to pay for her living expenses, which made her ponder deeply.

At that crossroads in her life, she faced an uncertain journey ahead, filled with anxiety.

She knew she couldn't pass up this rare opportunity, so she started looking for ways to make quick money.

After much consideration, she decided to work as a waitress at a nightclub.

Every night, as the city lights came on, she began her shift.

The nightclub was a world of its own, with bright lights, loud music, and a mix of laughter and conversation.

She wore a uniform, smiled, and moved through the crowd.

But the job was not as easy as she had imagined.

She often encountered drunk and unruly customers.

During those times, she gritted her teeth, held back her tears, and reminded herself to persevere.

The painful memories played like a movie in her mind.

She remembered the nights she spent working to save money, the difficult nights at the nightclub.

It was during this time that Emily, someone she once considered family, betrayed her, causing her to lose something precious and even become pregnant.

At that moment, her world seemed to collapse, filled with helplessness and despair. But fate hadn't completely abandoned her. The school she had dreamed of didn't expel her because of her past. Instead, they accepted her and gave her a chance to start over, rekindling her hope and teaching her that only she could save herself.

She was no longer the weak, easily bullied girl. She learned to find a way out of difficult situations, to endure humiliation without giving up, and to stand tall in adversity, determined to follow her own path.

Seeing Melinda lost in thought, Sam grew anxious.

He shook her arm, "Mommy, Mommy, can I go to the new school?"

Melinda snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Sam's pleading face, unable to resist.

"Can you give me a few days to think about it?" She picked Sam up and gave him a big kiss on his rosy cheek.

Sam thought for a moment and nodded.

Just then, her phone rang.

She put Sam down and checked the message. It was from Raymond: "How did it go? Does Sam like it?"

"Don't worry about transportation. I can have Stuart pick him up and drop him off every day!"

Melinda was stunned. Was Raymond insisting she agree?

She stared at the message for a while before replying, "Thank you, Sam loves it. So, let's do it. How much is the tuition?"

She didn't want to owe Raymond money. Getting Sam into such a good school was already a huge favor.

The reply came quickly: "No need to thank me. You know what I want."

The message ended with two smiley faces.

Melinda couldn't help but laugh. It seemed that the usually cold and serious Mr.

Thomas had a playful side too!

Maybe this was the real Raymond.

"Sam, I agree. You can go to the new school, okay?" She knelt down and hugged the still-pouting Sam.

In an instant, Sam's frown turned into a bright smile.

He happily hummed a tune and skipped into the living room.

The living room was brightly lit but empty.

She thought for a moment and decided to text Raymond: "Are you coming home for dinner?"

Raymond replied: "You and Sam go ahead. Don't wait for me."

Melinda paused, understanding that Raymond wanted her to make the first move. She smiled and replied, "Okay! Thank you, Sam loves the new school!"

The next morning, Melinda stood at the door, staring blankly at Raymond's room. He hadn't come home all night, and a sense of loneliness washed over her.

She had grown accustomed to his presence, which gave her a sense of security. Melinda shook her head with a bitter smile, took a deep breath, and walked to the bedroom. She gently woke Sam and told him that today they would handle the transfer paperwork and it would be his last day at his current school.

Sam rubbed his sleepy eyes and nodded obediently.

A warm feeling filled Melinda's heart. Sam's understanding and resilience made her incredibly proud.

She drove Sam to the nearby supermarket, bought lots of snacks he liked, and a big cake to thank his teachers and classmates.

After finishing the errands, she hurried to the lab and walked into her office, setting down her bag.

Her assistant, Kathy, came in and placed a steaming cup of coffee on the desk. "Ms. Sharp, we have a new graduate student in the lab. Mr. Thomas brought him personally."

Melinda paused, feeling a surge of mixed emotions.

Could it be the graduate student Delilah mentioned from headquarters?

"Is Mr. Thomas here?" She thought she should thank Raymond in person.
