Chapter 18
The Wife Situation: A Billionaire Age Gap Marriage of Convenience Romance (Billionaire Situation Book 1)
Same day
Lexi stares at me with shock in her eyes. The tote bag in her hand crashes to the floor and a few books spill out.
âUh-oh,â Connor says.
I stand and hold him in my arms as I move to her.
Sheâs frozen in place, staring between us. âI shouldâve asked. I didnât realize â¦â
âItâs fine; donât worry about it,â I tell her, bending over to help her pick up everything. âYou had no issues getting in?â
âWee,â Connor says, laughing as I hold him tight against me.
âNone.â Her cheeks burn bright red, and she doesnât look in my direction as I hand her the bag.
Then, I see her mentally build the brick wall, masking her emotions. She moves to the kitchen and puts something on the counter.
âAirplane!â Connor demands, and I hold him at his waist, flying him like Superman around the leather couch.
I walk around the living room as he screams and laughs, enjoying every minute. When I look up, Lexi smiles and watches us.
âThis is Connor Calloway,â I tell her. âAnd heâs coming in for a landing! Vrooooooooooom.â I try my best with the sound effects, flying him back to the couch and swiping his belly against the cushions.
I set him down and he climbs back onto my lap.
Lexi joins us.
âHi, Iâm Lexi,â she says to him, holding her hand out.
He shakes his head, tucking his face into my chest.
âDonât be shy,â I whisper. âSheâs very nice.â
Lexi chuckles. âHe looks so much like you.â Her voice is light and playful.
âYeah, heâs a dead ringer for me and Weston.â I give her a smirk.
That sparkle returns to her eyes as she turns back to Connor. âHow old are you?â
âThree,â he says, holding up four fingers.
âHeâs two and a half. But his mother would say thirty months.â I bend his fingers down. âTwo.â
Mischievously, he flips me off. Weston taught him that. It takes everything I have not to laugh, and Connor points his loaded finger at her.
âManners,â I say. âA gentleman doesnât act like that toward a lady.â
Lexi snorts.
I meet her eyes, leaning in to whisper, âYouâre encouraging him.â
Connor looks up at her and pushes off of me, crawling to Lexi and plopping onto her lap.
âUh, hi.â She readjusts herself to support him better so he doesnât fall.
Connor reaches forward and runs his fingers through her hair.
âYou should be glad I just washed his hands. Otherwise, youâd have sticky fingers to deal with.â
âI appreciate that,â she says. âConnor Calloway, youâre adorable.â
âRuns in the family,â I mutter, watching her be so gentle while asking him questions.
Heâs as mesmerized by her as I am. I lean against the couch, noticing how patient she is.
âMine.â Connor pokes her shoulder.
I laugh, placing my hand on Lexiâs back. âNo, sheâs mine.â
He shakes his head. âLex. Mine.â
I chuckle when he decides to shorten her name, and she glances at me because Iâve tried it too.
âLexi,â she corrects.
âLexi,â he repeats, grinning. He nods and then looks at me. âMine.â
âConnor, sheâs going to be my wife. Did you know that?â
A hint of blush touches her cheeks.
âNo,â he says, pointing his finger at me sternly.
âActually, yes.â It takes strength not to laugh as he wiggles from her and sprints across the room toward a few toys he was dropped off with. He grabs a truck and bolts back toward us, handing it to her. âI like this.â
âOh, me too.â She turns it over, studying it. âHmm, 1950-ish Ford F1. You can tell because of the front fender.â She points to the front of it.
He stares at her and gasps like she told him the most important fact of his life. âWow.â
âWow indeed.â My phone buzzes before I can say anything else, and I unlock it.
ANNA
Be there in five minutes.
EASTON
No problem.
I shove it into my pocket, bringing my attention back to them. Lexi shares more truck facts, and he listens to every word.
âDo you have a puppy?â he asks.
Lexi laughs and shakes her head. âNo. Do you?â
âHe doesnât because his mother wonât allow it,â I explain.
âOh,â she whispers.
A minute later, the doorbell rings, and I answer. I step to the side and allow Anna to enter. She smiles at me before noticing Alexis with Connor.
Thereâs a look in her eye, but she doesnât say anything. She knows better. âHow is he today?â
âIn a good moodâfor once.â
âConnor,â Anna singsongs, and as soon as he sees her, he latches on to Lexi and cries. âCome on, sweetie. Itâs time to go to your friendâs birthday party.â
He screams at the top of his lungs, and my ears ring. Lexi doesnât know what to do as Connor grabs on to her T-shirt and refuses to let go.
Anna struggles but eventually pulls him away and holds him in her arms as he kicks his feet and arms. âYou need a nap.â
âNoooooooo,â he screams like sheâs hurting him. Sheâs not.
âLexi! Lexi!â he says with his arms outstretched.
âYouâll see each other again soon,â I tell him, following them to the door. âBut you have to be good right now.â
He blinks up at me, pouting. Elephant-sized tears run down his cheeks.
âLexi.â He points to Lexi, then shoves his fingers in his mouth. Tears that he forces streak his cheeks. The boy can turn them on in a snap.
âIâll be here,â she promises.
âSheâs not going anywhere,â I confirm.
He nods and I hug him, moving his messy hair from his face.
âBe a gentleman, okay?â
âThank you,â Anna whispers, meeting my eyes before they leave.
When theyâre gone, I lock the door, then turn toward her. âHow was your day?â
âWait.â She shakes her head. âThatâs the first thing youâre saying to me after that?â
I smirk and lift a brow. âWhat are you referring to?â
âEaston, you have a secret baby. I did some research, and no one ever once mentioned you had a kid.â
I move to the couch, sitting next to her.
âHow do you feel about that?â I ask, studying her, reading her, trying to understand what she thinks.
Lexi sucks in a deep breath. âHaving a child involved with something so â¦Â temporary is a bad idea.â She leans back against the cushion.
âHeâs already Team Lexi though. The kid has the memory of an elephant. Iâm sure heâll be asking about you for weeks to come.â
We sit in silence for a minute as she tries to process whatever it is sheâs thinking.
âYou two have the same eyes.â
âItâs a Calloway thing,â I admit. âMy dad and grandfather. Good genes.â
âHeâs cute. It will be fun, having him around,â she finally says. âGive me someone to hang out with when youâre off doing whatever you do. But ⦠I wish youâd told me so I couldâve been more prepared,â she hurries and adds.
I canât hold it in any longer and burst into laughter.
Her brows crease and she shakes her head. âWhy is that funny?â
âConnor is my brother. Not my kid. Anna is his nanny. My father traded my mother in for a younger model, literally, and knocked her up almost immediately.â
Her lips part and I think I hear a relieved sigh release from her.
âWhen I told you there were no other women, I fucking meant it. Itâs only you, Lexi. There is no one else.â
She smiles. âIâm glad.â
âYouâre adorable,â I admit. âWhat were you thinking?â
âI thought how awful it would be to become the evil stepmother. I kept thinking that youâd knocked up someone in two weeks and broken it off after fourteen days.â She shakes her head.
I chuckle. âIâm not that big of an asshole.â
âThatâs the thing, Easton. I want to know everything about you. Iâm in a constant state of guessing and gathering crumbs from the things you do share. I donât even know your favorite color or number or day of the week.â
âBlack. Thirteen. Saturday.â
âVery emo of you.â She swallows hard. âAnd I want to know the deeper things too. Like, do you want kids?â
âI donât know,â I say on an exhale. âThis world and life are so fucked up. I donât know if Iâd want to subject anyone else to this. By the time Iâm ready to retire, Connor will be old enough to take over the business, so itâs not like I need an heir, and Iâm sure Weston will have fifteen children when he finds the one. Itâs never really been an option for me, so itâs not something Iâve ever considered.â
She meets my gaze, and I canât place the sadness on her face.
âI think youâd be a wonderful dad,â she whispers. âAnd youâd be able to give your children one of the best lives there is to live.â
âWith the right person,â I say. âI donât want them to have the same life I did. My parents werenât in love. I realize that now.â
She nods. âYouâll eventually find someone. I know it.â
âI hope,â I say, wondering if I already have. âAnd what about you?â
She glances at me. âYellow. Four. Friday. And maybe about the kids.â She pauses for a long while. âIâve always wanted to be a mom, but I canât get pregnant. Pretty sure Iâm broken.â
âYouâre not.â
âI am, and thatâs okay. Iâve come to terms with it. When Iâm no longer anti-love, maybe Iâll try again or adopt.â She forces a smile. âIt doesnât really matter right now though, not until our agreement has expired.â
I watch her intently as she shuffles through her emotions and buries the ones she doesnât want to share.
âPlease donât look at me like that,â she whispers.
âItâs not pity, Lexi. Itâs admiration.â
She nods, giving me a small smile.
âSo, onto my next question. Do you have plans tonight?â I ask, smirking, knowing she wants to talk about anything but this.
âActually, my calendar has been cleared for the next year.â
âLove to hear it. I want to take you somewhere.â
She smiles. âYou know I love surprises.â
