Chapter 554
The Spare Wife by Nadia Gordon
Chapter 554 Is That All?
Sean chuckled softly as he sat down beside Abigail and gazed at Scarlettâs sleeping face. He gently spoke, âWhen I was young, my parents passed away and my grandparents raised me. The year they died, I was struck by a grave illness that affected both my physical and mental health.â
Abigail remained silent, gnawing at her straw.
âPeople say that men donât cry easily, but I couldnât help but sob my heart out every day,â he confessed, having already forgotten the trauma of losing his parents.
He believed that he would never recover from the pain, but time proved to be cruel. Gradually, all the pain and sorrow he felt faded away.
She looked at him intently. âWhat happened next?â
âA month later, I didnât cry as often as before. A year later, I stopped crying altogether. Now, I have almost forgotten the agonizing pain I felt back then. At most, I just miss them,â Sean replied, placing a strawberry in his mouth.
âAre you telling me to cherish the present?â Abigailâs eyes sparkled with clarity.
âAbigail.â He spoke her name solemnly for the first time.
âJust get to the point. Thereâs no need to be like this,â she said, furrowing her brow.
He gently stroked her hair. âI find it strange. Youâve been away from them for over 20 years, yet time hasnât worn away their love for you. Is it because I am naturally cold-hearted? Is that why time can erode my love for my parents?â
She had no answer for him.
Indeed. Why?
However, she had heard someone compare a parentâs love for their children to a one-way stream that rarely flowed in the opposite direction.
The elders she knew often used this analogy to describe the love parents felt for their children.
According to them, a parentâs love for their children would always be greater than the childrenâs love for them.
Abigail looked at Scarlett and wondered if that was true.
13 âDonât overthink it. Iâm just expressing my confusion,â Sean said, standing up.
âIâm not overthinking anything,â she calmly stated.
It wasnât long before Lawrence returned.
âDadâs in the ICU, so itâll be a while before he wakes up,â he informed Abigail.
She simply nodded.
Lawrence knew that asking her to accept the Pearsons now was too much and too soon, so he didnât say anything more about Old Mr. Pearsonâs condition.
âYou havenât rested at all since you arrived here. Everything at the hospital has been taken care of now. Go rest. Iâll have the family driver escort you-â
âIâll just stay in my office,â Abigail interrupted him.
The Pearsons were still strangers to her. Moreover, Kelly might have lived in the room she would be assigned to.
âO-Okay.â Lawrence felt disappointed.
She ignored him and left the room.
Sean waited for her to walk out the door before muttering to Lawrence, âYouâve endured over 20 years of agony. A few more days is nothing.â
âYouâre right.â Lawrence took a deep breath and suddenly felt uplifted. âSheâs already back. I have the rest of our lives to make up for our mistakes.â
âExcept for being overly protective of Kelly, nothing about the circumstances can be blamed on you,â Sean stated.
He couldnât forgive Lawrence and Scarlett on Abigailâs behalf. However, the pain they felt from being betrayed by the person they trusted the most would be greater than if it were done by anyone else. Still, Sean was satisfied with what the couple had done today.
âIâm glad she has you,â Lawrence suddenly commented.
âThank you.â Seanâs mood brightened. After bidding farewell to Lawrence, he left to catch up with Abigail.
Abigail waited outside the hospital for a long time. When Sean walked out of the hospital doors, she turned to look at him coldly.

23 âWhat is it?â he asked as he approached her.
âYour attempt to win favor with them is very obvious,â she calmly stated. âYou already knew who I was when you agreed to the engagement with the Pearsons, didnât you?â
âGrandma told me your true identity a long time ago, but she didnât tell you because she was afraid of losing you. Secondly, she didnât trust the Pearsons. She was scared that you were pushed into the sea because they didnât want you. Maybe they wanted you dead because you are evidence of some dark secret. So, we buried the truth deep in our hearts,â he explained slowly. âOf course, I had my own motives when I agreed to the engagement.â
She scoffed coldly and sat in the car. She remained silent, her face frosty.
He sat beside her and looked at her profile. âDonât be angry. I did it because I didnât want to lose you.
âIâm tired.â She closed her eyes.
There were so many things that those around her knew while she was kept in the dark.
Did they see her as impulsive and hasty?
Analise would rather trust Sean than her.
They had lived together for years. Even if she accepted the Pearsons as her family, she would. never abandon Analise.
Sean fell silent for a long moment before saying, âGrandma was too scared to tell you anything because she loves you too much.
Her love made her cling to you so that no one else could take you away. Since she has chosen to speak up, it means she has also learned to let go. because she loves you.â
âI understand.â Naturally, she would never blame Analise for that.
Even if Analise didnât trust Abigail, it was only because her love for Abigail was deep enough. to make her overthink.
