Chapter 152
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 152
Kristin fumbled with the fork, her anxiety stretching into a prolonged silence before she finally spoke up. âNo⦠itâs not good.â
Rhett stood up, fetching a clean fork for Kristin. âDonât overthink it.â
âMr. FitzGerald, donât go headâtoâhead with James. Heâs the CEO of Aurora Tech. The partnership between FitzGerald Group and Aurora Tech is too intertwined. Both massive collaborations are benefiting mutually. Their fortunes are tied,â Kristin knew Rhett understood these stakes better than anyone.
Yet she still felt compelled to speak.
Rhett remained silent, contemplating the pros and cons on his own.
The companyâs interests were paramount, and his current situation was far from optimistic.
But when it came to choosing sides, it was a matter of weighing what was more critical.
Never had Rhett considered himself a man led by emotions..
In the past, everyone around him criticized him for being too rational, so much so that it bordered on coldâblooded.
But now, he felt offâkilter, his instincts betraying his usual demeanor.
After taking a bite of her spaghetti, Kristin changed the subject. âAbout Neal in the Investment Division, have you made any arrangements?â
âThere are internal meetings scheduled at the company while Iâm away at Harborside Haven, about appointing the new vice president.â Rhett nodded, sliding his tablet across the table to Kristin.
âLooking at the current voting results, Neal is in the lead.â Kristin frowned. This was not conducive to future strategies. âThe company values a cutthroat culture and competition. As Nicolaâs trump card, Neal is hellâbent on securing the vice president position.
Currently, there were four vice presidents. One was Rhettâs appointee, two were chosen by Holcomb. If the last spot went to one of Nicolaâs, Rhett would be at a disadvantage.
Rhett had been instrumental in the company for years, his contributions to its profits and value were undeniable. It was his rightful place.
Unfortunately, Holcomb was far from a supportive father.
âWhat do you think?â Rhett asked Kristin.
âIs Micah one of your alliances?â Kristin inquired.
Micah was second in line but lagging far behind Neal.
Rhett
irmed with a nod.

Kristin was sharp, clearly seeing the internal dynamics of the company.
âThe difference is thirtyâfour votes. While the final decision is up to the president, if the gap is too wide and youâre too overt in your support, it could provoke the collective ire.
âWe can have York work the numbers under the radar,â Rhett reassured her. In three days, Micahâs votes would surpass Nealâs.
âWith the votes nearly matched, we just wait for Neal to make a mistake.â Kristin pondered quietly. âWith such high support, Neal must be campaigning behind the scenes. The staff hold him in high regard, which means heâs been set up. They believe you wouldnât dare go against the will of the people and youâd follow his lead, which would be disadvantageous to you.â
It was a setup for a fall
âTomorrow, York and I will have a talk with Neal, hinting that youâre secretly courting him. Weâll hype up his capabilities throughout the company and make everyone believe heâs the destined. one. Let him think that you couldnât go against the public opinion and youâd choose no other,â Kristin strategized.
Rhett chuckled. âWhere did you learn these tricks?â
*Just⦠psychology.â Kristin stammered, flustered.
âIndeed. We can set him up internally, let him fall from grace, and seize the opportunity.â Rhett nodded. âBut itâll test your skills to execute it just right.â
Kristin bit her lip. âDonât worry, Iâve got this.â
Wanting to reassure Rhett of her capabilities, she insisted, âI really can do it.â
âIf you handle Neal, youâll be the hero,â Rhett said with a suggestive smile. âYou might want to think about what reward youâd like.â
The promise of a reward was Rhettâs way of showing unconditional trust in Kristin.
She blushed, her ears tinged red, focusing on her spaghetti. âNo, itâs not necessary. Itâs my duty.â
That night, Rhett broke his strict rules and indulged in a carbâheavy meal, something he never did, especially at such a late hour.
But since Kristin entered his life, he found she could break all his taboos.
It wasnât a bad thing but was quite exhilarating, actually.
He wondered just how far he could go.
The night was tinged with the opulence of a highâend club.
James had been drinking heavily, his complexion sour.
âMr. Bryce, whatâs got you so rattled?â a friend joked with a laugh.

James remained silent. When he saw Vincent approach, he nodded, signaling for everyone else to leave.
Sensing the tense atmosphere, the others excused themselves.
âMr. Bryce, you wanted to see me?â Vincent asked, his brows knitted as he took a seat.
âWord has it that thereâs a vice president race going on at the FitzGerald Group, right?â James asked nonchalantly.
âYou seem to be quite interested in the FitzGerald Group,â Vincent replied, wary.
James leaned back into the sofa, eyeing Vincent. âYou and Rhett couldnât be more different. Should I call you naive, or just plain stupid?â
Vincent grew darker. âWhat do you want, Mr. Bryce?â
âAurora Techâs partnership with FitzGerald Group isnât wedded to Rhett. We work with whoever sits at the top,â James hinted with a meaningful glance.
âSince when did you ever think highly of me?â Vincent was no fool and understood Jamesâ implication.
âLook, it doesnât mean you arenât a solid partner in crime,â James said casually, lifting his glass of bourbon with a practiced ease. âI can help you get everything youâre after.â
*James, since when are you playing Santa Claus?â Vincent eyed him skeptically. What was this guy after?
âI need someone who can follow orders, not someone like Rhett whoâs always trying to oneâup me.â James tapped his fingers rhythmically against the glass. âDriving a wedge between Kristin and Rhett should be childâs play for you, right?â
Vincent frowned. âJames, after all these years, youâre still hung up on Kristin?â
âSheâs the one I want,â Jamesâ possessiveness was palpable.
âSix years ago, you went to great lengths to snatch her from me,â Vincent tightened his grip. âBut youâve got ties with the wood family, and even if you donât marry Adrienne, there would
be another arranged match. You canât offer Kristin the status she deserves.â
âSheâll have everything else but that,â Jamesâ voice was a low growl.
âRhett is the type who never puts a woman first. Heâs just using Kristin to flex at our parents, nothing more. Sheâll be disposable to Rhett soon enough,â Vincent scoffed.
In his view, Rhettâs interest in Kristin wouldnât last.
Kristin would be tossed aside like yesterdayâs news.
âI donât have the patience to wait, and neither does your mother,â James reminded him pointedly.
âThere
are many ways of getting rid of Kristin,â Vincent said, his brow creased as he clenched.

his fist
Right now, he needed Jamesâ help to cement his position within the FitzGerald Group.
