Chapter 169
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 169
Hertha parked her car downstairs at the Silvergrove City Paternity Testing Center.
Miss Hertha, you were right. Rhettâs got his suspicions. He went straight to Granger, sald the assistant.
Granger was Rhettâs old childhood buddy and worked at the center. Hertha had predicted Rhett wouldnât trust anyone with this, so he would surely turn to Granger.
Hertha scoffed. âAll that effort for nothing, huh?â
Getting a hair sample from Rhett was like trying to pluck a whisker from a lion. So, she had to come up with a different plan.
âDo as I instructed,â Hertha commanded before leaving her car.
Granger had his car parked out front. Clutching a plastic bag with Rhett and Summerâs hair samples, he headed toward the center.
Suddenly, a dull thud echoed, followed by the car alarm.
Granger turned around. âDamn it!â
Some idiot had thrown a rock at his brandânew car!
âWhatâs the security doing? Howâd this guy get in?â Grangerâs heart ached for his new purchase, worth over three hundred grand.
âCatch him!â Granger was fuming..
Another thud and someone abruptly bumped into Granger, the plastic bag falling to the ground.
Hertha quickly bent down, swapped the bags, and handed the bag to Granger with a smile. âSorry about that. I was in a hurry.â
âNo problem,â Granger glanced at Hertha, squinting his eyes.
After a quick apology, Hertha left swiftly. Once in the alley, Hertha took a deep breath to calm herself, looking down at the plastic bag in her hand.
Wellâ¦
âIâve got the hair samples. Start the test. I need to know the results,â Hertha said on the phone.
At the same time, Rhett gently reprimanded as Milo avoided the veggies and went straight for the meat. âMilo, donât be a picky eater.â
Rubbing his head, Milo mumbled, Uncle Rhett, I donât like veggies.â
Rhett corrected his way of speaking. He thought Summerâs baby talk was cute, while Miloâs was annoying, âVeggies are good for you.â
âMy momâs veggles taste good,â Summer said, offering Milo some greens.
Milo looked on curiously. âReally? Your mom is so cool. My mom never cooks or eats with me, and dadâs hardly ever home.â
Kristin paused, glancing at Rhett. How could Caleb be like that with his kid?
âI tried calling Caleb, but no answer. Eveâs drunk again. These two, I swearâ¦â Rhett wanted to curse, but he held back in front of the kids.
Some parents didnât deserve forgiveness.
âNo matter the excuse, parents who arenât there for their kids are unforgivable,â Kristinâs voice was hoarse, her eyes on her plate.
Sheâd missed five years of Summerâs life in prison. She hadnât even given Summer a complete family.
Rhettâs hand holding the fork went numb, a pang of guilt striking him.
âWhat if⦠suppose Summerâs dad didnât know his existance but tried to make amends after figuring out the truth? Could he be forgiven?â Rhett asked softly, almost too careful.
Kristin hesitated. James had tried to make amends more than once, but she didnât need it. âNo, itâs unforgivable,â she replied. She couldnât forgive herself for the years lost with Summer, nor the hurt that night.
âWhat would you have done if I hadnât taken you from Crescendo Town that day and we hadnât teamed up?â Rhett wanted to know what Kristinâs plan would have been without other options.
âI wouldâve left Summer with James, then disappearedâ¦â Kristinâs honesty was stark.
She wouldâve donated a kidney to Ruby, atoned for her sins, and died on the operating
table.
Rhettâs heart felt a piercing pain as he suddenly stood up.
âMr. FitzGerald, not eating?â Kristin asked anxiously, wondering if the meal wasnât to his
taste.
Rhett shook his head. âNo, itâs not that. I suddenly feel a bit queasy. I need to take a call.â
The caller ID showed Granger.
With the phone in hand, Rhett walked distractedly into the study, his expression grim.
His breathing was quick, and suddenly, he didnât want to know the truth.
Maybe it was better never to know. And he would continue making amends to Kristin and Summer as best he could.
Rhett, the results are in. Want to know?â Granger was on the line.
Rhettâs voice was hoarse. âNo, I donât want to know it anymore.â
âWhy not play by the book?â Granger chuckled. âCome on.â
âYeah, tell me,â Rhett rubbed his forehead, his fingers numb.
âYouâll have to get me a new Bentley first. My car got smashed, Granger grumbled.
Rhettâs eyes darkened. âYouâve made enemies?â
âWhat enemies could I make? Just bad luck today,â Granger cursed.
âEnough with the sob story,â Rhett braced himself.
âThe samples were no good, and I couldnât run the tests,â Granger reported. âBut I suspect theyâve been tampered with. You should bring the kid here again. The two samples I got, chromosomeâwise, theyâre from two different women.â
Granger laughed. âRhett, it turns out youâre a lady, huh?â
Rhett massaged his brow. âCut the crap. Your car got smashed, samples switched, and you still have the nerve to call me?â
He never shouldâve trusted Granger.
âWhat you should worry about is Kristin. That woman is meticulous, and Kristin might not be a match for her,â Granger said lazily.
âWhat woman?â Rhett frowned.
I thought about it hard. After my car got vandalized, this woman bumped right into me,. scattering my stuff all over. She helped me pick everything up. So, I checked the parking lotâs security footage, and you know what? She has swapped out the samples,â Granger chuckled. âTalk about bad luck, huh? She probably has no clue what I do for a living.â
Granger owned a paternity testing center and was also a private investigator.
âCut the chase,â Rhett said, his anger barely contained.
âHertha, your little sweetheart,â Granger smirked. âWhen you had me look into that. incident from six years back, I smelled a rat. It was unlikely to be Hertha. Sheâs been practically throwing herself at you, and if it were her that night, she wouldnât have stayed quiet for six years. But the footage was too old to recover, and without her confession, youâre out of luck.â
At his words, Rhett frowned.
âJust bring the kid over, and weâll do this by the book,â Granger advised Rhett to bring
Summer for a test
âNo need.â Rhett clenched his fiata.
He couldnât let Kristin get suspicious, nor could he dare let her find out he was the one who hurt her that night.
Fear gripped Rhett.
âKeep this under wraps. Iâll handle Hertha myself,â Rhett warned Granger.
âYouâre insulting my professionalism,â Granger snorted. âWhen are you going to introduce me to your wife?â
âNo time.â Rhett hung up abruptly.
Hertha⦠It looked like the Haywood family needed to disappear.
â-
In the Haywood Manor,
Hertha sat by the window, sipping red wine, when the phone rang.
âThe results are in. Itâs a fatherâson match.â the other party told her the result.
The wine glass shattered on the floor, and Hertha trembled all over.
Summer was indeed Rhettâs son.
She couldnât let Summer and Kristin stay in Silvergrove City any longer. Sheâd do anything. to make Kristin and Summer vanish.
