Chapter 20
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 20
âThat kidâs not mine,â Caleb blurted out defensively.
âCut the crap, Caleb,â Eve wasnât buying it.
Holcomb furrowed his brow. âNo matter whose kid it is, I expect you to handle it properly.â
Caleb felt sweat begin to pool in his palms. Holcomb was backing him into a corner, eager to see how heâd handle Kristin in order to save Eveâs reputation.
Eve watched Caleb with a smirk of schadenfreude. âLetâs see how you handle Kristin and the little bastard. Play your cards right, and my dad might bail out your family business.â
Caleb shot Eve a look of deep anger, snorted, and stormed off.
âDad, why wonât you let me speak?â Eve started whining to Holcomb right after Caleb left.
âIf you two had half the composure and guts of your elder brother, Iâd be at ease,â Holcomb sighed. âWhatâs marriage and love anyway? You must have dirt on someone to have them by the balls.â
Eveâs lips curled up. She was eager to see if Caleb would do something drastic to Kristin and the kid for the sake of the Gladstone familyâs business.
âDad, a guy like Caleb wonât just roll over and play nice.â Vincent said with a stony face.
Caleb had some nerve, having had the audacity to make a move on his girl back in the day. And he would pay the price for it.
âThe Gladstone family is facing more than just a minor crisis. Heâd come begging to you.â Holcomb patted Vincentâs shoulder. âLately, focus your energy. Iâm not pleased with your performance at the company, and neither is your brother.â
âDad! With Rhett around, nothing I do is ever good enough,â Vincent envied Rhett but had to admit the guy had talent. He was intimidated by Rhett.
âKeep yourself in line, and Rhett will help you out.â Holcomb hoped for family harmony. âIâll be traveling abroad in a few days. Donât you two cause any trouble at home.â.
âDad, Iâ¦â Vincent wanted to talk to Holcomb about shares and management rights but didnât dare to speak up.
Vincentâs mother Nicola glared at him unhappily upstairs. If he didnât bring it up, when would he? Rhett had complete control of the company at the time. What would that mean for her and her children?
âHolcomb, Vincent doesnât have real power in the company. Even if heâs capable, he canât show it because those old staff only recognize shares. Itâs tough for Vincent,â Nicola said with a smile, carefully catering to Holcomb.

shares.
âFather had given the shares directly to Rhett in the will. Nobody can do anything without Rhett loosening his grip.
âHolcomb⦠youâre the head of the family. Rhett has to listen to you. Heâll give in if you speak up. Rhett isnât unreasonable.â Nicola redressed, implying that if Rhett hoarded his company shares without parting some to Vincent, heâd be acting out of line.
Holcomb rubbed his temples. âIâll find an opportunity to talk to him.â
In the demolition area, Garner was whacked with a stick by Vincentâs people and later found and taken to the hospital.
These days, reporting to the police was useless. Garner couldnât even get close to the FitzGerald Mansion.
âUncle Garner!â
Garner, fixing a car, heard Summerâs voice, dropped his wrench, and ran over excitedly. âSummer!â
Kristin, pale, gave Garner a weak smile. âGarner, weâre okay.â
Garnerâs eyes reddened as he nodded. âHungry, right? Iâll wash up and cook for you. Iâm sorry. Iâm not capable enough to protect you.â
âDonât say that, Garner.â Kristin shook her head.
Garner had done so well. Heâd done a commendable job taking care of Summer for the past five years on her behalf.
Kristin was content.

âYour face⦠what happened?â Garner noticed Kristinâs swollen cheek, filled with anger and helplessness.
Vincent was correct that he knew nothing about society, where power always trumped all.
How could he protect Summer and Kristin?
âItâs nothing.â Kristin choked up, shaking her head and looking down.
âNo more talk⦠Letâs eat,â Garner hurried inside, washed his hands, and started cooking.
An oatmeal satisfied Kristin immensely.
It had been long since sheâd had a hot, big meal.
âWant more? Thereâs still some in the kitchen,â Garner offered with a smile as he went to get Kristin more oatmeal.
Kristin had more and smiled at Garner. âGarner, itâs delicious.â

âUncle Garner used to be a chef. Heâs good,â Summer praised, passing the egg to his mom.
âEat, Summer. You are growing,â Kristin gave it back to Summer.
âDonât worry, Summer, your mommy has got a big one here,â Garner laughed and served another one to Kristin.
âGarnerâ¦â Kristinâs voice wavered, looking at the plate. âThank you.â
âDonât be silly. Iâm your brother,â Garner waved it off. âSummer, go get me some ketchup.â
With Summer out of earshot, Garner whispered, âStill⦠donât know who Summerâs dad is?â
Kristin shook her head. She wasnât sure if it was Caleb.
âSummer was premature, always weak. Hec anemia could be hereditary. The doctor said we need her biological parents to cooperate in tests to find the cause,â Garner sighed.
Kristinâs grip on her spoon tightened, and she bit her lip. âIâll⦠figure it out.â
She would go to Caleb.
