Chapter 194
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 194
After coaxing Liam to sleep, Kristin finally managed to slip away.
Sneaking her business card into her suitcase, she wrapped her arms around Rhett from behind. âLetâs switch to a different resort. If Liam wakes up and starts crying for me againâ¦â
It would ruin the vacation.
She wanted to spend more time with Rhett. This holiday might be their last chance to be together. Having him, even if it was just for a short while, was a gift.
Rhett had just hung up with York and was surprised to feel Kristinâs embrace. âWhat did Hanson say to you?â he asked, a little thrown off by her sudden forwardness.
âMommy, I want mommyâ¦â Liamâs cries echoed from outside, growing fainter.
Clearly, Hanson had taken him away forcibly.
Kristin glanced at Rhett with a fluttering heart. Their eyes met.
After a moment of contemplation, Rhett swiftly began to pack. âLetâs go!â
They couldnât afford to be entangled by the little boy again.
Kristin, though pained to hear Liam cry, took Rhettâs wrist and ran.
After all, she had a son, and Liam wasnât hersâ¦
As much as her heart ached, she couldnât care for someone elseâs child forever.
Watching Kristin tug at his wrist, Rhett couldnât help but smile. âYou still havenât told me
what Hanson said.â
Kristin stopped, turning to face Rhett. âHe thinks Iâm using you as a stepping stone, trying to climb up the social ladder with the Lewis family.â
Rhett stepped forward, frowning. âAnd what did you say?â
âI saidâ¦â Kristin took a deep breath, mustering her courage.
Some things, if not said today, might never be said at all.
âI said, in my heart, Mr. FitzGerald, you are the best. I donât need to use you as a stepping stone to reach out to anyone.â Kristin smiled warmly, almost glowing in the sunlight.
Rhettâs heart skipped a beat. So this was what it felt like to be smitten.
He pulled Kristin into his embrace, humming in approval. âYouâve got me, and thatâs all you need. You donât have to reach out to anyone else.â
Even if it meant trying harder so Kristin would always want to âreach outâ to him.
After changing resorts, Rhett called York. âStick to the plan, but we might have to move it up. Holcomb is getting impatient.â
York informed Rhett that the Haywood and FitzGerald families had met today for a family dinner- all behind Rhettâs back, deciding on his marital future.
They saw him as Holcombâs son, or rather, a pawn In Holcombâs game, to be used for advancing their interests.
Emerging from the bathroom, Kristin stood on the carpet, still dripping wet, her hair soaked.
She was wrapped in just a towel, looking uneasy and anxious.
Different from her usual self, today Kristin was thinking about how to be more proactive⦠She wanted to do things that would make Rhett happy, with the little time they had left. After all, he was the only one who had ever considered her education and the injustice of her fiveâyear imprisonment.
Hearts are made of flesh, and she knew very well who had been kind to her and who hadnât.
âMr. FitzGeraldâ¦â Kristinâs voice was soft, her ears red with shyness.
âWant me to dry your hair?â Rhett said, putting down his phone and tousling her damp locks. âYou need to dry off, or youâll catch a cold.â
Kristin thought theyâd work up a sweat shortly and would need another shower anyway, so she tiptoed and kissed Rhettâs lips.
Rhett was stunned for a long moment. Today, Kristinâs initiative was making his heart
race.
Narrowing his eyes, Rhett caught Kristinâs head and kissed her deeply.
âWhatâs gotten into you?â he asked suspiciously.
Without answering, Kristin began unbuttoning Rhettâs shirt, one by oneâ¦
Rhett inhaled sharply. This kind of open seduction was lethal.
âKristinâ¦â Rhett felt he could die happily in her hands, âDo you want something?â
Kristinâs nature was so soft, even at his roughest she would only whimper, but today she had taken the initiative. It unsettled him.
âJust⦠just something Harriet taught me, to be more forwardâ¦â Kristin stuttered.
Her chest felt tight with anxiety.
She was afraid of losing Rhett, but if her presence only brought negative consequences
for him, she would rather leave.
âHamletâs quite the teacherâ¦â Rhett chuckled. âIâve had York arrange a new place for her to live and even got her a job.â
Rhett raised his eyebrows expectantly, as if waiting for Kristinâs praise.
Kristin gazed at him in surprise, her eyes sparkling. âMr. FitzGerald, you sorted everything out for Harriet?â Kristin was excited.
Rhettâs lips curved up. âItâs the least I could do for someone who taught my wife so wellâ¦â
Kristinâs ears turned red at the word âwife.â The title was intoxicating.
Embracing Rhett, Kristin dared to kiss his Adamâs apple, remembering Harrietâs words about it being a sensitive spot.
Rhett felt his last thread of reason snap, lifting her onto the bathroom counter.
âYouâre playing a dangerous game,â Rhett said in a husky voice.
Every time Kristin sparked a flame and then cried for mercy instead of extinguishing it, it melted his resolve. This time, no matter what, he couldnât afford to go soft.
Kristin, blushing deeply, took Rhettâs face in her hands and looked at him more boldly.
This man, he was perfection personified. Could he really be so perfect forever?
But no matter what, she always knew she had to leaveâ¦
Kristin let out a sigh, her heart aching as she pulled Rhett into a tight embrace. âRhett, have you caught the news? It seems like Mr. Holcomb actually agreed to that marriage arrangement with the Haywoodsâ¦â
Rhettâs brow furrowed, sensing something was off with Kristin.
She had seen the news from back home.
âYeah, I saw it. If heâs agreed to a marriage, let him go through with it,â Rhett said with a deep voice. âItâs none of my business. Iâm married, and thatâs legally binding.â
Rhett had made up his mind. Once they were back, if Holcomb gave him too much of a hard time, heâd just post their wedding pictures on Twitter for everyone to see.
Letâs see what tricks Holcomb could pull then.
Threaten him with shares? Heâd like to see them try
Heâd only been gone a few days, and already the FitzGerald Group was in disarray.
Vincent was unfit for his position, and the board members knew it best. Let him make a mess â what could he possibly achieve? Rhett was actually quite looking forward to it.

With a scoff, Rhett held Kristin closer. âDonât worry.â

He would announce that he was married already, and the Haywoods would look like fools.
People like them didnât deserve sympathy.
And the Haywoods didnât deserve any mercy from him.
